How a fuel saving map works
The aim is not less power. It is to make the usable torque arrive lower down, so the engine does the same work at lower revs and in a higher gear. You end up changing up sooner and holding a higher gear on the same hill, which is where the fuel goes.
On a diesel doing regular motorway or dual carriageway miles that can be a genuine difference. On a petrol doing short urban hops it is usually much less, and we would rather steer you towards driveability instead.
Who it actually suits
High mileage commuters with a fixed route. Van drivers doing the same round every day. Anyone whose driving is consistent enough that a percentage saving turns into a real number by the end of the month.
The single biggest variable is not the map, it is the right foot. A map gives you the opportunity to use less fuel. Driving it the way you always did is how you collect the saving.
What we will not claim
We will not give you a percentage figure before we have seen the vehicle. Any number quoted blind is a guess, and the ones you see advertised tend to be the best case on the most suitable engine.
Tell us the vehicle, your weekly mileage and the kind of roads, and we will give you a realistic expectation for that specific case.
Economy Remapping questions, answered
How much fuel will an economy remap save?
It depends on the engine, the mileage and how it is driven. We will give you a realistic expectation for your specific vehicle rather than a headline percentage, because a number quoted before seeing the car is a guess.
Does an economy map reduce power?
No. It generally moves usable torque lower in the rev range so the engine does the same work at lower revs. You have as much available, you just need less of the rev range to get it.
Which vehicles benefit most?
Turbocharged diesels doing consistent motorway or dual carriageway mileage tend to benefit most. Short urban journeys in a small petrol benefit least.
How long before it pays for itself?
That is a function of your mileage and fuel price. If you do a fixed commute or a daily round, it is a much shorter payback than occasional weekend use. Give us your weekly mileage and we will talk it through honestly.
Will it affect performance or driveability?
Most people report it feels easier to drive, because it pulls from lower down and needs fewer gear changes.
Is it safe for the engine?
Yes, when written within the tolerances of the engine and drivetrain, which is how we work. An economy map is typically less demanding on the engine than a performance one.
Can I have economy and performance in one map?
To a degree. Most road maps are a compromise and we bias that compromise towards whichever matters to you. Tell us which, and be honest about it.
Do I need to declare it to my insurer?
Yes. A remap is a modification regardless of whether it is aimed at economy or power.
Will it help with a DPF that keeps blocking?
Sometimes it helps, but a repeatedly blocking DPF usually has a cause that needs diagnosing rather than mapping around. We would look at that first.
Does it work on vans?
Yes, and vans doing a consistent daily round are among the best cases for it.
Can it be reversed?
Yes. The original file is saved before anything is written.
Do you come to me?
Yes, within roughly 25 miles of Rugby and Lutterworth.
Want a straight answer about your vehicle?
Tell us what it is and how you use it, and we will tell you honestly what is worth doing.
