ECU Remapping in Hinckley

Most people who ring us from Hinckley already know that a remap means changing the software in the engine. Far fewer have ever been told what that software is doing, or which parts of it get altered. This is the long answer, written for drivers across Hinckley, Burbage and Barwell.

What the engine computer is deciding while you drive

When you press the accelerator you are not opening anything directly. You are making a request. The control unit weighs that request against air temperature, air pressure, coolant temperature, crank position, what the turbocharger is doing and what the exhaust sensors are reporting back, then settles on how much fuel to inject, when to inject it, how much boost to permit and how far to advance the ignition. It reaches those conclusions hundreds of times a second for as long as the engine is turning.

None of that is improvised. It comes from tables of numbers stored in the unit, one set governing fuelling, another boost, another timing, plus limiters that cap torque in particular gears and at particular engine speeds. Rewriting the calibration means reading those tables off the vehicle, changing the ones that matter for what you actually want, and writing them back. Nothing is bolted on and nothing is taken off. You drive away on exactly the hardware you arrived with.

That is why the honest description of this work is a narrow one. Software decides how well an engine uses what it already has. It cannot give you a healthier injector, a turbo that is not tired or a clutch that has stopped slipping. Anyone promising that a file will cure a mechanical fault is selling you something rather than diagnosing anything.

Written for your vehicle, not ordered by engine code

Two cars built in the same week, carrying the same engine code, can be in genuinely different health. One has been serviced on time and fed decent fuel. The other has spent years on short cold journeys and is quietly down on one cylinder. A file written around a healthy example and copied onto both will suit one of them and lean far too hard on the other, and the owner rarely finds that out on the day it is loaded.

So we work the other way round. The original calibration is read off the unit and stored first. The engine is then logged on the road so we can see what it is genuinely doing under load rather than guess from the badge on the back. The changes to fuelling, boost and timing are made on the back of that, and the vehicle is logged again afterwards to confirm the change did what it was meant to and that nothing is sitting outside sensible limits.

Because the original file is kept, everything is reversible. People ask for that when a car is being sold, when a lease is going back, or occasionally because they want to drive both versions and make their own mind up. Putting it back is a short job and nobody minds being asked.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across Hinckley and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

Working out which job you are actually asking for

Almost every call opens the same way, with somebody asking whether we can remap their car. The more useful question is what you want to be different afterwards, because the answer sends the work down one of several routes. If you want the car to answer faster when you ask it for something, that is the brief covered on our performance remapping in Hinckley page. If you cover consistent weekly distance and want the fuel bill to move instead, the arithmetic behind that lives on economy remapping in Hinckley.

If there is a warning light on the dash, none of the above is your starting point. A filter that keeps loading, an EGR circuit that is sticking or an AdBlue system throwing a countdown is a diagnostic job, and it needs sorting before anyone writes anything to the engine. That work is set out under DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Hinckley. We diagnose, clean, force regenerate and repair those systems. We do not remove them.

Working vehicles are a separate conversation again, because weight, load and duty cycle change what the map should be built around, and there is more on that under van and commercial remapping in Hinckley. If you drive an automatic, the transmission has its own control unit and its own file, and it is worth raising early rather than after the engine work is finished.

What a Hinckley booking looks like from your end

Hinckley is roughly ten miles north west of the workshop on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, which puts it among the shorter runs we make and makes it easy to fit into a day. Nuneaton is only about four miles further on, so we are through this part of the county regularly. This page also covers Hollycroft, and Burbage, Barwell, Stoke Golding and Earl Shilton are all within a few minutes of where we would already be.

The service is primarily mobile, so the vehicle stays where it is and the equipment comes to it. A typical visit runs about an hour to ninety minutes, which covers reading and storing the original file, the road work, writing and loading the new calibration, and checking the result. If you would rather bring the vehicle to Lutterworth instead, that option is always open and nothing about the job changes.

The part worth doing first is the phone call. Tell us the make, model, year and engine, roughly where the vehicle sits during the day, and what you want out of it. That conversation usually decides whether the work is worth your money at all, and it costs you nothing to have it.

Remapping in Hinckley: your questions answered

What is actually stored in an ECU, and what do you change?

The unit holds tables of numbers that decide fuelling, boost pressure, ignition timing and the torque limits allowed in each gear and at each engine speed, along with all the sensor readings it uses to choose between them. We read those tables off the vehicle, alter the ones relevant to what you want from the car, and write them back. Nothing physical is added, removed or replaced.

What is the difference between this and a plug in tuning box?

A box sits between a sensor and the control unit and feeds it a false reading, so the unit makes its decisions on information that is not true. It cannot see the whole picture and it cannot be tailored to your engine. Rewriting the calibration changes the decisions themselves, using accurate sensor data, and it can be checked afterwards with logging. They are not the same thing at all.

How do I work out which of your services I need?

Start with what you want different. More response means a performance brief. A lower fuel bill on repeated mileage means an economy brief. A warning light means diagnostics before anything else. A loaded working vehicle means the map gets built around weight rather than around a driver on their own. Describe the problem rather than naming a service and we will point you at the right one.

Is my car too new to be remapped?

Not usually, though some recent control units are locked down harder than older ones and a small number have to be read off the vehicle rather than through the diagnostic socket. That is a per model question rather than a per year one. Give us the make, model, year and engine when you ring and we will establish which category yours falls into before anybody agrees a date.

Does a remap wear off over time?

No. The calibration is written into the control unit and stays there until something writes over it. What can change is the vehicle around it, so an engine that develops a fault, gets clogged or misses a few services will feel worse than it did, in exactly the way it would have on the original file. If it starts feeling flat again, that is worth investigating rather than remapping again.

Do you keep a copy of my original file?

Yes. The original calibration is read off and stored before anything else happens, which is the first step on every job. It means the vehicle can be returned to precisely the state it was in when we arrived, whenever you want that. It matters most when a car is being sold, when a lease is going back, or when a dealer wants everything standard before looking at something under warranty.

Does it change anything about servicing the car?

It does not change the service schedule or the parts your vehicle needs. What it does mean is that keeping to that schedule matters a little more than it did, because you are asking the engine to work slightly harder for the same result. Oil quality and filter condition are the obvious ones. Nothing exotic, just the maintenance the manufacturer already asked for, done on time.

Do you need any paperwork from me?

No documents are needed to do the work. What we do need is accurate information about the vehicle, which means the make, model, year and engine, any warning lights present, anything that has been done to it mechanically, and whether anybody has mapped it before. If it is on finance or on a lease, say so at the enquiry stage, because those agreements sometimes carry their own conditions.

What if I do not get on with it once it is done?

Then it goes back. The original file is stored before anything is written, so returning the vehicle to standard is a short job rather than a drama. It is worth saying that this happens rarely, but the option existing is part of why we read and keep the original in the first place rather than treating it as an afterthought.

Does this page cover Burbage, Barwell and the villages around Hinckley?

Yes. Burbage is a little over a mile away, Barwell about two, Stoke Golding under three and Earl Shilton around three and a half, and Hollycroft is covered here too. All of them sit within a few minutes of where we would already be for a Hinckley job, so nothing about arranging the visit or the work itself changes because of which one you are in.
