Economy Remapping in Coventry

An economy map is an investment that only pays back if the mileage repeats. In Coventry that cuts both ways. A daily run out on the A45 and up the M6 is a strong case. A four mile crawl inside the ring road is a much weaker one, and we will say so.

Which Coventry do you actually drive in?

The city contains two completely different fuel bills. One belongs to the driver whose commute is short, slow and full of junctions, where most of the fuel goes into repeatedly accelerating a cold engine from rest. The other belongs to the driver covering serious weekly distance on dual carriageway and motorway at a steady cruise.

A fuel focused map has far more influence over the second than the first. That is not a sales position, it is just where the savings live. If your week is mostly the first kind, we would rather tell you that on the phone than take the booking and leave you wondering why the tank is lasting the same as it always did.

What changes in the file

The aim is not to take power away. It is to move usable torque down the rev range so the engine achieves the same result at fewer revs and in a taller gear. You end up shifting up earlier, holding a higher gear where you used to drop one, and using less throttle for the same speed.

On a turbocharged diesel covering consistent distance that is a genuine difference and it repeats every week without you having to think about it. On a small petrol doing short urban trips it is much smaller, because the losses in that kind of driving are dominated by the stop and the start rather than by how efficiently the engine cruises.

The bigger variable is the driver

A map creates the opportunity to use less fuel. Collecting it is a separate act, and it happens with your right foot. If the extra low down pull gets used to make quicker progress away from every set of lights on the ring road, the consumption figure will not move and the problem is not the calibration.

This is why we ask about your driving before writing anything. Somebody doing a fixed commute at a steady speed will see the full benefit. Somebody who enjoys the extra response will see less of it, which is a perfectly reasonable choice as long as it is a choice made knowingly. If performance is what you actually want, look at performance remapping in Coventry instead and buy the thing you want.

The number we will not give you

We will not quote you a percentage before seeing the vehicle. Any figure offered blind is a guess, and the ones you see advertised tend to be the best case on the most suitable engine, presented as though it were typical. That is how people end up disappointed by work that was actually done properly.

What we will do is take the vehicle, the weekly mileage and the kind of roads you use, and give you a realistic expectation for that specific combination, including the times when the realistic expectation is not enough to justify the cost. If yours is a working vehicle, the van and commercial remapping in Coventry page covers the same maths from the trade side.

Economy Remapping in Coventry: your questions answered

How much fuel would I actually save?

It depends on the engine, your weekly distance and how you drive, so we will not put a figure on it before seeing the vehicle. What we will do is give you a realistic expectation for your specific case once we know the details, including the cases where the honest answer is that the saving would be too small to justify the work.

Does an economy map make the car slower?

No. It generally shifts usable torque lower down, so the same work happens at fewer revs. You have as much available as before, you simply need less of the rev range to reach it. Most people describe the car as easier to drive afterwards rather than slower, because it stops asking for a downshift so often.

My commute is about four miles each way. Is it worth it?

Probably not, and that is an unusual thing for a mapper to say. Short cold journeys are dominated by warm up losses and repeated acceleration from rest, which is the part a map has least influence over. You would likely see something, but not enough to make the maths work quickly. We would rather be straight about it.

What if I do the A45 and the M6 every day?

That is the strong case. Consistent distance at a steady cruise is exactly where a fuel focused calibration does its best work, and because the mileage repeats, so does the saving. Tell us roughly how many miles a week and on which roads and we can be reasonably specific about what to expect.

Which engines respond best?

Turbocharged diesels covering regular dual carriageway and motorway distance tend to respond best of all. Larger turbocharged petrols can do well too. Small naturally aspirated petrols doing short city trips respond least, which unfortunately describes a fair number of second cars around here.

Is an economy map harder on the engine?

Generally it asks less of it than a performance map does, because the intent is to have the engine working comfortably rather than near its limits. As with anything, that depends on the file being written for the specific vehicle and kept inside sensible limits, which is why we log before and after rather than loading something and leaving.

Can I have economy and a bit more performance together?

To a degree, because most road maps are a compromise. What we can do is bias that compromise towards whichever matters more to you. What nobody can do is maximise both at once, so it helps if you are honest with yourself about which one you would pick if you had to choose.

Do I need to declare it to my insurer?

Yes. The purpose of the map makes no difference to that. Whether it is aimed at fuel or at power it is still a modification to the vehicle and it should be declared, and most insurers are entirely relaxed about it once they have been told.

Will it help a DPF that keeps blocking?

Not as the first step. A filter that repeatedly blocks has a cause, and that cause needs diagnosing rather than mapping around. Once it is sorted, a properly written map can reduce how much soot the engine produces, which helps the situation stay sorted. In that order, not the other way round.

Does it work on a van doing a daily round?

It is one of the better cases. A fixed round means fixed mileage, and fixed mileage means the saving arrives every week rather than depending on what sort of month you have had. The same logic applies to anyone whose driving is genuinely repetitive.

Can it be taken back off?

Yes. The original file is read and stored before any change is made, so the vehicle can be returned to the factory calibration at any point. Nothing about an economy map makes that any harder than it would be with any other file.

How long does it take and do you come out?

Usually an hour to ninety minutes at the vehicle, and yes, Coventry is around thirteen miles from the workshop so a mobile visit is the normal way we do it. If you would rather bring the car to Lutterworth, that is available too. Ring and we will sort a time.
