DPF Cleaning, Diagnostics and Forced Regeneration

A blocked diesel particulate filter is a symptom, not the illness. We diagnose why yours is filling faster than it can clear, clean it properly, and run a forced regeneration where the vehicle needs one.

What a blocked DPF is actually telling you

Your DPF traps soot from the exhaust and burns it off during a regeneration cycle, which needs the exhaust hot enough for long enough. If the car mostly does short, cold journeys it may never complete one, and the filter slowly loads up until the light comes on.

That is the common case, but it is not the only one. A failing EGR valve, a tired turbo, a leaking injector, a faulty differential pressure sensor or a temperature sensor reading wrong will all fill a DPF or stop it regenerating. Clear the light without finding the cause and you will be back in a few hundred miles.

So we start with diagnostics. We read the live data, check the differential pressure across the filter, look at soot load against ash load, and check whether the vehicle has been attempting regenerations and failing, or not attempting them at all. Those point at very different problems.

What we actually do

Depending on what the diagnosis shows, that can mean a forced regeneration through the ECU, an on-vehicle chemical clean, repair or replacement of the EGR valve, sensor replacement, or AdBlue system repairs on vehicles that use it.

Where the filter is genuinely at the end of its life, because ash load rather than soot load is the problem, no amount of cleaning will fix it and we will tell you that plainly rather than take your money for a regeneration that will not hold.

What we will not do

We do not remove DPFs, and we do not delete or disable EGR or AdBlue systems on road-going vehicles.

Removing or defeating emissions equipment on a vehicle used on the road is an MOT failure and it is unlawful to use that vehicle on the road afterwards. It can also invalidate your insurance. Anyone offering it is selling you a problem, not a fix. We repair these systems so they work as they should.

DPF & EGR Diagnostics questions, answered

What are the signs of a blocked DPF?

Usually a dashboard warning light, noticeably reduced power or a limp mode, higher fuel consumption, a longer idle after you switch off, or a smell of burning. Some vehicles also show a message asking you to drive at sustained speed.

Can you clean a DPF without removing it from the vehicle?

In most cases yes. On-vehicle cleaning combined with a forced regeneration deals with the majority of soot-loaded filters. If diagnostics show the filter is ash-loaded rather than soot-loaded, cleaning will not restore it and it needs replacing.

What is a forced regeneration?

It is a regeneration cycle commanded through the ECU with the vehicle stationary, rather than waiting for the car to run one itself. It raises exhaust temperature deliberately to burn off trapped soot. It is only appropriate when the filter is within a load range the vehicle can safely clear.

Why does my DPF keep blocking?

Most often because the vehicle does not get hot enough for long enough to regenerate, which is common on short urban journeys. It can also be caused by a faulty EGR valve, injector problems, a failing sensor or a turbo issue. Diagnostics tell us which.

Will you remove my DPF?

No. Removing a DPF from a road-going vehicle is an MOT failure and it is unlawful to use the vehicle on the road afterwards. We diagnose, clean and repair these systems instead.

Does a blocked DPF cause an MOT failure?

It can. Diesel vehicles are checked for visible smoke and for evidence that the filter is present and intact, and a heavily loaded or faulty filter can push emissions outside the limits.

Can you repair the EGR valve rather than replace it?

Sometimes. A valve that is sticking because of carbon build-up can often be cleaned and freed. One that has failed electrically, or where the internal seat is damaged, needs replacing.

What is AdBlue and what goes wrong with it?

AdBlue is a urea solution injected into the exhaust to reduce nitrogen oxides on many modern diesels. Common faults are crystallisation in the injector or lines, pump failure, heater faults in cold weather, and quality or level sensor failures.

Do you work on vans as well as cars?

Yes. Vans do a lot of the motorway and stop-start mileage that causes DPF problems in the first place, so they are a large part of this work.

Do I need to bring the vehicle to you?

Not usually. This is a mobile service within roughly 25 miles of Rugby and Lutterworth, so we can come to your home or your yard. A workshop visit is available if you would rather.

How long does the work take?

Diagnostics are usually well under an hour. A forced regeneration typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes once it starts. Repairs depend entirely on what the diagnosis finds.

Will cleaning the DPF improve my fuel economy?

If the filter was restricting flow, often yes, because the engine is no longer working against a blockage. If your economy problem has another cause, clearing the filter will not change it, and we would rather find that out first.
