ECU Remapping in Coventry

A company diesel doing the same commute five days a week. A taxi that barely gets switched off. Something quicker that only comes out on a dry Sunday. All three of those get called a remap, and in Coventry we hear from all three in the same week. None of them wants the same file.

Same word, three completely different jobs

The company car driver usually wants the flat spot gone. The thing that happens when you join the A45 and nothing arrives for a beat and a half. The taxi driver wants the car to stop costing so much to run and to stop feeling worn out by Thursday. The weekend driver wants the engine to feel like the one the brochure was describing. Those are three different sets of decisions inside the same software, so the useful first question is which of them you are.

It matters because pulling in one direction usually means giving a little somewhere else. You can have a car that responds instantly everywhere and drinks accordingly, or one that is calm and frugal and asks you to plan your overtakes. Most people want something in between and can describe roughly where in between, once somebody asks them properly rather than selling them a name off a list.

If you already know which end of that you are at, the detail sits on performance remapping in Coventry. If your automatic is the actual problem, because it thinks for half a second every time you need it, that is a transmission conversation and it is covered on gearbox tuning in Coventry.

We ask about your week before we ask about your engine

A Coventry postcode tells us less than you would think. Two people with the same car can drive entirely different lives out of it. One sits in the city, cold, stopping constantly, never getting the engine properly warm. The other is out at junction two or three of the M6 every morning and puts a hundred miles on before lunch. The software that suits one of those genuinely irritates the other.

So the call goes that way round. What the vehicle is, what it has covered, how it is serviced, what a normal week looks like and what specifically is annoying you about it now. That takes a few minutes and it decides whether the job is worth booking at all. We would rather find out on the phone that it is not.

It also flushes out the vehicles that are unwell rather than badly calibrated. A car that is losing power because something is failing does not need a new file, it needs finding out. If a warning light is already on, or the vehicle has dropped into limp mode, start at DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Coventry instead, because mapping over a fault is how people waste money.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across Coventry and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

Five minutes on the phone will tell you a lotRing 07773 694570 and say what the vehicle is and what it is doing that you want stopped. If a map is not the answer for your Coventry driving, you will be told that rather than sold something.

Written for the vehicle in front of us

Two identical cars, same engine, same year, same trim, will not leave with identical files. One has been serviced on the nose and used properly. The other has done nothing but cold miles and short trips, has a turbo that is not quite as crisp as it should be and is running a little tired. Treating those two the same because a database says they are the same model is lazy, and it is how engines get hurt.

The original calibration comes off the ECU and gets kept. Then the vehicle gets driven and logged so we can see what it is actually doing under load rather than what it ought to be doing. Changes go in based on those readings, and the vehicle gets driven again to confirm it liked them. Whatever the second set of readings says is the thing that decides how far the map goes, not what somebody hoped for.

On the overwhelming majority of vehicles none of that requires the ECU to come out of the car, and none of it requires the car to be anywhere special or lifted onto anything. It needs a place to sit with the doors shut, a sensible piece of road nearby and somebody willing to stop when the readings say stop rather than when the customer is impressed. The last of those three is the part that is hardest to buy cheaply.

How a Coventry visit actually runs

Coventry is about thirteen miles from the workshop, which is close enough to be an ordinary booking rather than an expedition. We come to where the vehicle is, whether that is home, a driveway or somewhere you can leave it for an hour or so during the day. The whole job is usually done inside an hour to ninety minutes including the driving, and you are not without the vehicle at any point beyond that. More on how that works is on mobile ECU remapping in Coventry.

You are welcome to come to the workshop instead. It is at 3 Rugby Road in Lutterworth, which is a straightforward run down from the city if you would rather see where the work gets done or you are heading that way anyway. Either way it gets booked in advance, because one person doing the work means one job at a time.

When it is finished you get told what changed and why in language that means something. If anything about it does not sit right once you have lived with it for a week or two, the original file is still sitting on the laptop and the vehicle can go straight back to how it was. That safety net is deliberate.

Remapping in Coventry: your questions answered

Is remapping a road car legal?

Changing the engine software on your own vehicle is legal in itself. What is not legal is running a vehicle whose emissions equipment has been interfered with, and we do not do that work. Your obligations are to keep the vehicle in a roadworthy condition and to tell your insurer about a modification. Both of those are simple enough to deal with, and neither is a reason to avoid having the job done properly.

How is this different from a plug in tuning box?

A box sits between a sensor and the ECU and tells the ECU something that is not quite true, so the engine reacts in a way its own software never intended. A remap changes the software itself, so the engine is still working from one consistent set of instructions with all its own protections intact. That is why we do the second thing and not the first.

Does high mileage or an older car rule it out?

Not by itself. Age and mileage matter far less than condition and history. A well looked after vehicle with a lot on the clock is often a better candidate than a neglected younger one. What we are looking for is an engine that is healthy now, holding boost as it should and not already struggling. If the logs say it is tired, the map gets kept modest or we do not do it.

Do you do petrol engines or only diesels?

Both. Modern turbo petrol engines respond well and the process is the same one: read the original, log it on the road, write for that vehicle, log it again. Naturally aspirated petrol engines are the ones where we are most likely to tell you it is not worth the money, because there is often very little in them once the marketing is taken away. We will say which yours is.

Should the car be serviced before you map it?

If a service is due anyway, have it done first. Fresh oil, a decent filter and a fuel system that is not struggling all make the logging more representative and the result better. If the service is not due for a while, do not rush it forward on our account. What we do not want is an engine that is overdue by thousands of miles, because then we are measuring neglect rather than the engine.

Can two of the same car really end up with different maps?

Yes, and they often do. Condition, servicing, what has already been done to the vehicle, how it gets driven and what the owner actually wants from it all push the decisions around. That is the entire argument for writing a file on the vehicle rather than handing over something prepared in advance for a model name. The car in your driveway is the one that gets mapped.

I cannot tell if my problem is software or something failing. Can you?

Usually, and that is a better place to start than booking a map and hoping. A description of when it happens, at what revs, hot or cold, and whether anything has appeared on the dash normally narrows it down quickly. If it points at a mechanical or emissions fault, you get told that, because a map laid over a developing problem hides it for a while and then costs you more.

Will the car sound different afterwards?

A little, sometimes, and only because the engine is doing slightly different things rather than because anything has been altered on the exhaust. A diesel may sound a touch more purposeful under load. Nothing about a properly written map should make a car loud, rough or unpleasant to sit in, and if yours ever did, that would be something to ring us about rather than live with.

Does a map change anything when the vehicle is MOT tested?

We write maps on the basis that everything fitted to the vehicle stays fitted and stays working, so the test is looking at the same hardware it would have been looking at anyway. We will not do work that makes a vehicle unlawful to use on the road, which has been asked of us before and will be refused again. If you have specific worries about your vehicle, raise them when you ring.

Why do remapping quotes vary so much?

Mostly because the work behind them varies. Loading a file bought in bulk takes a few minutes and involves nobody driving anything. Reading the original, logging the vehicle on the road, writing for it and then logging again takes an hour to ninety minutes and involves somebody who can interpret what came back. Those are two different products with the same name attached to them.

Marks a great guy, honest and does his best to offer the most accurate advice. Sorted out two of my vans In the space of 2 days, to get them on the road, running and making me money again. Highly recommend using his services. I will be going back for other vehicles to get work done.

I recently had a Stage 1 remap done by Mark and couldn’t be happier. He’s passionate about what he does and took the time to explain the process, what to expect, and gave me some recommendations for after the remap.
