ECU Remapping in Leicester
Most of the calls we take from Leicester are not from car people. They are from somebody whose diesel has quietly felt worse every month for a year, or who has been told a remap is the answer and wants to know whether that is actually true. It is a fair question and it gets a straight answer.
The plain version, for people who are not into cars
Your engine is run by a small computer, and that computer follows a set of instructions written before the vehicle was ever sold. Those instructions have to work for a buyer in a hot country and a buyer in a cold one, for good fuel and poor fuel, and for owners who service on time and owners who do not. They are a safe average. Remapping replaces that average with instructions written for one vehicle, which is yours.
Nothing is fitted, nothing is cut and nothing is bolted under the bonnet. The vehicle looks identical when it is finished. The only thing that has changed is what the computer decides to do with the fuel, the turbo and the timing at any given moment, which is why a job that sounds dramatic takes about an hour to ninety minutes and leaves no trace you could photograph.
It is worth saying what it is not, because Leicester is a big place and people are told all sorts. It is not a box plugged in behind the dashboard. It is not a sticker. It is not a setting that can be flicked on from an app in a car park. If somebody offers you any of those things, they are selling something else entirely.
What a map genuinely cannot do
Software cannot repair anything. If a turbo is on its way out, if there is a leak somewhere in the boost pipework, if the injectors are tired or the vehicle has been running on long overdue oil, the map is not the fix and putting one on top will only hide the picture for a while. We would rather tell you that on the phone than take a booking and let you find out in six weeks.
The same applies to the emissions side. A filter that is already loaded, a warning light that keeps returning or a vehicle dropping into limp mode is a diagnostic job before it is a mapping job, and it goes to DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Leicester first. We do that work properly, meaning we find the reason, clean it and regenerate it, and we do not do the unlawful version that some people still ask for.
Automatics have their own version of this. If the hesitation you hate is the box deciding rather than the engine delivering, no amount of engine work will satisfy you, because you will have paid to fix the wrong half of the problem. That distinction is set out on gearbox tuning in Leicester, and we will tell you which half yours is before anything is booked.
Ask before you commit to anythingRing 07773 694570 and describe the vehicle and how you use it around Leicester. You will get told whether mapping is worth doing for you, including when the answer is that it is not.
Call 07773 694570One city, an unusually wide range of vehicles
Leicester produces a broader spread of work than anywhere else we cover. A trade van that is loaded by seven in the morning. A private hire car that sits on the ring road all evening. A family diesel that does the school run, the shop and one long run to see relatives in the summer. Those vehicles are asked to do genuinely different things, and the file that suits one of them would irritate the owner of the next.
That is why we do not keep a Leicester file. A working vehicle wants its changes down where it pulls away loaded and where it sits in top on the motorway, which is the argument made on van and commercial remapping in Leicester. A car whose owner is watching what it costs to run every week wants something different again, covered on economy remapping in Leicester.
You do not have to work out which of those you are before you ring, and you do not need to arrive with the right words for it. Describing an ordinary week, and the thing about the vehicle that made you pick the phone up, is normally enough for us to say which conversation you are actually having. Occasionally it is enough for us to say that you are not really having any of them and that your money is better kept where it is.
How the job runs, fourteen miles from the workshop
Leicester is about fourteen miles up from the unit, so a visit is routine rather than a production. We drive to wherever the vehicle is, do the reading, the driving, the writing and the second drive there, and go through the result with you before leaving. You keep the vehicle the entire time apart from the road testing, which is a different proposition from handing it over for a day.
If you would rather come to us, the workshop is at 3 Rugby Road in Lutterworth, straight down and easy to find. Some people prefer that, particularly if they want to stand there and ask questions while it happens, which is welcome. Either way it needs booking, because there is one person doing the work and one vehicle gets full attention at a time.
The original calibration is read off and kept before a single value is changed. That means the vehicle can be returned to exactly how it arrived, whenever you want, for whatever reason, without any argument about it. Knowing that is what makes most people comfortable enough to go ahead in the first place.
Remapping in Leicester: your questions answered
Is remapping the same thing as chipping or a stage kit?
Chipping is an old term from when the software sat on a physical chip that had to be swapped. Today the software is written to the ECU electronically, so the word survives without describing what happens any more. A stage is just a label somebody applies to how far a map goes. We talk in terms of what your vehicle will actually do differently rather than which badge it earns.
Does a map wear off or need doing again later?
No. It is software sitting in the ECU and it stays there until something overwrites it. The two things that overwrite it are a main dealer flashing new software to the vehicle, usually during a recall or an update, and somebody else mapping it again. Neither is a disaster and both are fixable. Nothing about a map fades or degrades with mileage on its own.
Do you work on hybrids or electric vehicles?
It depends entirely on the vehicle, so ring and tell us exactly what it is. Plenty of hybrids still have a conventional engine with its own ECU, and some of those can be worked with. Fully electric cars are a different world and are not what this service is about. What we will not do is guess on the phone and then turn up hoping, so we would rather check the specific vehicle first.
Will it affect what the vehicle is worth when I sell it?
It does not have to, because the original software is kept and can go back on before you sell or hand the vehicle back. Some buyers want a mapped vehicle and some would rather have a standard one, which is entirely their business. Having the route back available means you get to make that decision when the time comes, rather than having made it accidentally years earlier.
Should I drive it any differently for the first week?
Drive it normally. There is no running in period and nothing to baby. What is worth doing is paying attention for the first few hundred miles, because that is when you will notice whether it is doing what you asked for. If anything feels off, or the vehicle behaves in a way you did not expect, ring rather than deciding to live with it and mentioning it months later.
Two of us share the car and want different things from it. What then?
That is a more common problem than you would think and it is worth raising on the phone. Usually there is a version that both drivers are happy with, because the disagreement is often about response rather than outright speed, and response can be improved without making the car tiring for the other person. If it genuinely cannot be reconciled, we will say so rather than pleasing one of you.
Is there any record of what was done to my vehicle?
The original calibration comes off the vehicle before anything is changed and is kept, so there is always something to go back to. You also get talked through what was altered and why in plain terms before we leave, rather than being handed the keys and waved off. If you want it explained again in a month because somebody has asked you a question about it, ring.
My garage says remapping ruins engines. What do you say to that?
That a lot of remapping deserves that reputation. Files bought in bulk and loaded without anyone driving the vehicle, pushed as far as they go regardless of what the engine was telling anybody, do hurt engines. The answer is not to avoid the work, it is to avoid that version of it. Ask whoever you are speaking to what they log and what would make them stop, and see what they say.
Can I change the type of map later if my driving changes?
Yes. People change jobs, stop commuting, start towing, or move from one end of the city to the other and suddenly have a completely different week. The vehicle can be revisited and the file adjusted for what you are now doing with it. That is a normal conversation and not an admission that anything went wrong the first time round.
Does it affect anything else, like stop start or cruise control?
It should not. Those systems carry on working the way they always did, because the work is aimed at how the engine delivers rather than at the conveniences bolted around it. If something on your particular vehicle is likely to behave differently, you get told before the job rather than discovering it on the way home. Surprises are not part of the service.
