Performance and Stage 1 Remapping in Rugby
Rugby drivers spend a surprising amount of time crawling round a roundabout and then asking for everything the car has to get onto something fast. That transition, not a number on a printout, is what a performance map should be built around. We write ours for the vehicle and test it on the roads you use.
Where a Rugby car actually needs its power
Look at how the roads around here are arranged. M1 junction 18 sits on the edge of town, the M6 begins a few miles to the north, and the A5 cuts across the top. Between them there is a lot of low speed roundabout work, short slip roads and give way lines that put you straight into traffic already doing seventy. You are rarely accelerating from rest on an empty road. You are almost always joining something.
That pattern asks for a very particular thing from an engine. It wants a response that arrives the moment you ask for it, from about two thousand revs, without waiting for the turbo to catch up and without a gap while the car works out what you meant. Peak figures at the top of the rev range are irrelevant there, because you will have changed gear long before you reach them.
So when somebody in Rugby asks us for more power, the conversation is about response and where it lands rather than headline numbers. Stage 1 is usually the whole answer
Manufacturers write a calibration that has to survive fuel quality we never see here, climates we never get, and owners who skip services. The safety margin they leave behind is real, and on a modern turbocharged engine a map written for that one vehicle on UK fuel can use a good part of it without changing a single component. That is the work most Rugby customers are actually asking for.
Stage 2 assumes you have already spent money on airflow, and writing a Stage 2 file for a standard car is a way of taking payment for something the vehicle cannot use. If you have fitted parts, tell us what they are and we will build the map around them. If you are planning to, ring before you buy anything, because the order matters more than people expect.
If the car is an automatic, the transmission software is part of the same conversation rather than an upsell we mention afterwards. Adding torque and leaving the gearbox to work it out for itself usually produces a car that is faster on paper and worse to drive. A map does not repair anything. If a boost hose is splitting, a coil pack is on its way out, the clutch is marginal or the car is due a service it has not had, adding torque will find that weakness sooner and it will not pick a convenient moment. We ask about history, warning lights and how it has been running before we agree to book anything in.
Sometimes that conversation ends with us saying no. A car with a fault stored, a slipping clutch or a cooling system that is already struggling is not a candidate until the underlying job is done. Saying so costs us a booking and saves you a much larger bill, which is a trade we are happy with.
Before anything is written we read and save the original calibration, so the car can go back to exactly the state it arrived in. People ask for that when a vehicle is heading back to a dealer, when it is being sold, or sometimes just because they want to drive both and decide for themselves. It takes minutes to put back, and it costs nothing to ask.
Testing it on roads you recognise
Rugby is about seven miles from the workshop on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, so getting to you is a short run and easy to fit into a day. We bring everything with us. The car is logged on the road before the map is written and logged again afterwards, because the only way to know a change did what it was meant to do is to measure it rather than assume it.
That road work matters more than it sounds. Fuelling, boost and timing all behave differently under real load on a real surface than they do sitting on a driveway at idle, and the roads around Rugby give you both halves of the picture within a couple of miles: slow, awkward junction work and then a long fast stretch to settle at.

Will I actually notice it on the roads round Rugby?
The change most people report is in the middle of the rev range, which is where you spend nearly all of your driving here. Pulling away from a roundabout on the A5, joining at M1 junction 18 with the slip road already busy, or overtaking on a single carriageway without needing two gears down. Peak power at the top of the rev band is the part you almost never use.
What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2?
Stage 1 is written for a vehicle with no hardware changes and works within the margin the manufacturer left in the software. Stage 2 assumes you have already improved how the engine breathes, usually intake and exhaust. There is no sense in a Stage 2 file on an otherwise standard car, and we will tell you that rather than sell you one.
How much power will my car gain?
It depends entirely on the engine, and we will not throw a percentage at you over the phone. A modern turbocharged engine usually has far more margin in it than a naturally aspirated one, and two cars wearing the same badge can be in very different states of health. Tell us the exact vehicle and we will give you a realistic expectation for that car specifically.
Is it safe for the engine and gearbox?
When it is written for the individual vehicle and kept inside what the drivetrain was built for, yes. The risk comes from generic files loaded because the engine code matched, which is not how we work. We log the engine on the road before and after so we can see what it is doing rather than hoping. A car that is already unwell is a different conversation.
Do I have to tell my insurer?
Yes. A remap counts as a modification and needs declaring, in the same way as a set of wheels or a suspension change. Most insurers deal with it without any fuss once told. The problem only appears if it is undeclared and then comes up during a claim, which is a bad moment to find out.
My car is on finance or a lease. Should I still do it?
Tell us that at the enquiry stage and we will give you a straight answer. Finance and lease agreements often carry conditions about modifications, and a manufacturer warranty can be affected if a fault is traced back to the map. We keep the original file so it can go back to standard, but it is better to know where you stand before you start.
Can it be put back to standard?
Yes. The original calibration is read off the ECU and saved before anything is written to it, so the car can be returned to precisely the state it was in when we arrived. People ask for that when selling, when handing a vehicle back, or occasionally because they want to drive both and decide which they prefer.
Do you do petrol cars or just diesels?
Both. Turbocharged petrols respond well and are a large part of the performance work. Naturally aspirated petrols have far less headroom in the software, and on some of them the honest answer is that the gain would not justify the money. How long does it take and where do you do it?
Usually about an hour to ninety minutes at the vehicle, including reading the original file, writing the map and the road work afterwards. Rugby is around seven miles from the workshop in Lutterworth so it is a short run for us, and we can do it where the car is parked. The workshop is there if you would rather bring it in.
Somebody else has already mapped it. Is that a problem?
Not necessarily, but say so when you ring. We can read what is currently loaded on the car. Depending on what we find, we may suggest going back to the original file first so that we are building from a known starting point rather than layering something on top of work we cannot see the reasoning behind.
Will it ruin my fuel economy?
Driven the same way afterwards, many cars use the same or slightly less, because the engine is doing the same work with less effort. Driven the way the extra response invites you to, it will use more. That is a decision made with your right foot rather than something done to the car, and most people land somewhere in the middle.
What does it cost?
Car remaps start from £129. Vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle because the work involved genuinely differs between them. We will tell you the figure for your vehicle before you commit to anything, and if we think a map is not worth the money on your particular car, we will tell you that too.
