DPF Cleaning, Diagnostics and Forced Regeneration in Rugby
A blocked diesel particulate filter is a symptom, not the illness. We find out why yours is filling faster than it can clear, clean it properly and run a forced regeneration, rather than papering over it and handing the problem back to you.
What a blocked DPF in Rugby is usually telling you
A DPF collects soot and then burns it off during a regeneration, which needs the exhaust to reach and hold a high temperature for a sustained period. That happens naturally on a long, steady run. It does not happen on short local trips, and it does not happen properly if the van or car keeps getting switched off part way through a regeneration cycle.
Rugby produces both patterns, and they fail differently. If your vehicle lives on the M1 and the A5 doing long motorway legs and the DPF is still blocking, the driving is not the cause and something upstream is producing more soot than it should. If it does short hops round town and out to local sites, the driving pattern probably is the cause, and the fix has to address that as well as the filter.
Either way, the light on the dash is telling you about a consequence. Cleaning the filter without finding out what filled it just resets the clock.
What we actually do
We start on the diagnostics rather than the filter. That means reading live data rather than just pulling codes: differential pressure across the filter, soot and ash loading as the ECU calculates it, exhaust temperatures, how many regenerations have been attempted and how many completed, and whether anything upstream such as a leaking injector, a failing turbo seal, a stuck EGR or a faulty sensor is producing the soot in the first place.
Once we know what we are dealing with, we clean the filter properly and run a forced regeneration, then confirm with live data that the pressure differential and the calculated soot load have actually come back down. Then we tell you what caused it, because otherwise you will be doing this again.
Sometimes the honest answer is that the filter is beyond cleaning and needs replacing, or that the real job is the injector or the sensor rather than the DPF at all. We would rather say so.

We do not remove diesel particulate filters and we do not write software that pretends a missing filter is still there. It is an MOT failure, it is unlawful to use the vehicle on the road afterwards, and it is not something we will put our name to whatever the vehicle is or however it is used.
The same applies to EGR and AdBlue. We diagnose them, we repair them and we get them working as designed. We do not blank, delete or emulate them. If that is what you are after, we are not the right people, and we would rather tell you that on the phone than waste your time.
Our own van says DPF Diagnostics on the side for a reason. That is the actual job.
Coming to you in Rugby
Rugby is roughly seven miles from our workshop in Lutterworth, so it is a short run for us and easy to fit in. A lot of DPF work can be done at the vehicle: the diagnostics, the live data, the forced regeneration. If the filter needs removing for a proper clean, or the diagnosis points at something that needs a workshop, we will tell you that before we start rather than halfway through.
Bring it to Rugby Road in Lutterworth if that suits you better. Either way, ring first and tell us the symptoms, the mileage and what the vehicle actually does day to day, because that conversation usually narrows it down a long way before anyone plugs anything in.
DPF Cleaning and Diagnostics in Rugby: your questions answered
My DPF light is on. Can I keep driving?
A steady light usually means the filter is loading and the vehicle wants a regeneration, which often means a sustained run at speed. A flashing light, limp mode, or a DPF light with other warnings alongside it means stop driving it and get it looked at. Continuing to drive a vehicle in that state is how a cleanable filter becomes a replacement.
Will a long run on the M1 clear it?
Sometimes, and it is worth trying if the light has only just come on and the vehicle is otherwise driving normally. Twenty minutes at a sustained speed in a lower gear than you would normally use gives the exhaust the best chance of getting hot enough. If the light stays on after that, the filter is too loaded to self clear or something else is wrong.
Do you remove DPFs?
No. Removal is an MOT failure and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road. We clean, diagnose and force regenerate, and we will not write software that pretends a missing filter is still fitted. If that is what you want, we are not the right people for the job.
Why does my DPF keep blocking even though I do motorway miles?
That is the useful diagnostic clue. If the driving pattern should be clearing it and it still blocks, something upstream is producing more soot than the filter can burn off. Common causes are a leaking or poorly atomising injector, a turbo passing oil, a stuck EGR valve, or a temperature or pressure sensor reading wrong so the ECU never triggers a proper regeneration.
Is short local driving round Rugby bad for a DPF?
It is the hardest use case for one, yes. Short trips where the exhaust never reaches temperature mean soot goes in and rarely gets burned off, and a regeneration that starts and then gets interrupted when you switch off can leave things worse than before. It does not mean a diesel is wrong for you, but it does mean the filter needs a proper run occasionally, or a different approach.
Can you do it at my house or my yard?
Usually yes. The diagnostics, the live data reading and the forced regeneration can be done at the vehicle across Rugby. If the filter needs to come off for a deep clean, or the fault turns out to be something that needs a workshop, we will tell you that before we start.
What is a forced regeneration?
It is when we use diagnostic equipment to command the ECU to run a regeneration cycle deliberately, rather than waiting for the vehicle to decide to do one. It gets the exhaust up to temperature and burns off accumulated soot. It is not a fix on its own, which is why we look at what caused the loading first.
How do I know if the filter can be cleaned or needs replacing?
Live data tells you most of it. Soot can be burned off, but ash cannot, and a filter with high calculated ash loading or a pressure differential that stays high after a successful regeneration is at the end of its life. We would rather tell you it needs replacing than take money for a clean that will not hold.
Will remapping the vehicle fix the DPF problem?
No, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something. A map does not unblock a filter. What a properly written map can do, once the underlying problem is sorted, is stop the engine producing more soot than it needs to. That is a second step, not the fix.
What about EGR and AdBlue faults?
We diagnose and repair both. AdBlue faults in particular are often a sensor, a heater, a crystallised injector or a quality issue rather than the whole system, and they are worth diagnosing properly rather than replacing parts hopefully. What we will not do is blank, delete or emulate either system.
How much does DPF work cost?
It depends entirely on what the diagnostics find, which is why we do not quote a flat figure. A forced regeneration after a straightforward diagnosis is a very different job from a filter that needs removing, deep cleaning and refitting, or an injector fault that has to be sorted first. Ring and describe the symptoms and we will give you a realistic idea.
Can you tell me anything over the phone before booking?
Often quite a lot. The symptoms, the mileage, whether the light is steady or flashing, whether it has gone into limp mode, and what the vehicle does day to day will usually narrow it down a long way. It costs you nothing to ring and describe it.
