ECU Remapping in Broughton

The most useful part of a Broughton job happens before anybody drives anywhere. Kettering is under three miles away and we are eighteen or so to the west, but none of that decides whether the work is worth doing. A ten minute phone call usually does.

What we ask on the phone, and why

The questions are always the same four. What is the vehicle, exactly, down to the engine. How far does it go in a normal week and on what sort of roads. Has anything been showing on the dashboard, recently or intermittently. And when was it last serviced properly. None of that is small talk. Each answer changes what we would do or whether we would come out at all.

The engine matters because margins differ enormously. A modern turbocharged unit usually has real room in its calibration, a naturally aspirated petrol often has very little, and two cars wearing the same badge can be in wildly different states of health. Mileage matters because it decides whether the map should be aimed at response or at fuel. History matters because a map is not a repair.

That last one is where most honest conversations end up. If something is already struggling, adding torque does not fix it, it just chooses the moment it fails. We would rather work that out with you before a visit is arranged than halfway through one, and if the answer is that a map would not do much for how you actually drive, you will be told so plainly.

A village that drives into Kettering

At under three miles, the run into Kettering is short. Corby is a little under nine and Northampton close to eleven, so the longer journeys from here are real ones rather than errands. Most Broughton drivers have a week made of both, and the ratio between them is what a map should be built around rather than any figure printed on a leaflet.

If nearly everything is the three mile version, the engine barely settles anywhere and the gain worth having is low down, so the car feels willing without needing revs. If you make the Northampton or Corby trip regularly, there is a genuine case for biasing towards economy instead, because a saving on a journey you repeat is a saving that compounds quietly across a year.

Either way, the change lands in the middle of the rev range rather than the top. That is where you spend your time, and it is the part of the engine that does the actual work of getting you out of a junction. There is more detail on how a visit works under mobile ECU remapping in Kettering.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across Broughton and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

Start with the call, not the bookingVehicle, mileage, warning lights and last service. Four answers and we can usually tell you whether a map is worth your money.

The jobs we say no to

We do not take diesel particulate filters off, and we will not write software that behaves as though a missing one is still fitted. Removal is an MOT failure and it leaves the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, and no description of how or where you drive changes either of those facts. EGR and AdBlue get the same answer for the same reasons.

What we do instead is diagnose them properly. That means live data rather than just a stored code: pressure across the filter, the soot and ash figures the ECU is calculating, exhaust temperatures, and how many regenerations were attempted against how many completed. Then a clean, a forced regeneration, and a check that the numbers genuinely came back down rather than an assumption that they did.

Occasionally the honest finding is that the filter is beyond cleaning, or that the real fault is an injector or a sensor and the filter was only the symptom. We would rather tell you that than take payment for a clean that will not hold for long. It is a less profitable conversation and a considerably better one.

Eighteen miles east, and the eight villages on this page

Broughton is roughly nineteen miles east of the workshop in Lutterworth, which puts it firmly in the planned visit category. We agree a definite time rather than a window, and the vehicle details go in the diary beforehand so the right equipment comes with us. Once we are there the job takes about an hour, occasionally ninety minutes on a vehicle that is slow to read.

Everything is done at the car. A driveway is perfect, a quiet lane is usually fine. Battery health is the one thing that will genuinely stop the work, since an ECU needs voltage to stay steady for the whole write and a battery that starts the car can still let go partway through. Flag it when you book if you already have doubts about yours.

This page also covers Pytchley, Orlingbury, Walgrave, Mawsley Village, Great Cransley, Little Cransley, Hannington and Hardwick. If you are nearer Rothwell or Kettering there are separate pages for both. Otherwise get in touch with the vehicle and your weekly pattern and we will tell you what we would and would not do with it.

Remapping in Broughton: your questions answered

What should I have ready before I ring?

The make, model, year and engine size, roughly how far the car goes in a normal week, anything the dashboard has been showing, and when it was last serviced. Those four answers tell us more than anything else. If something has felt off lately, even if no light has appeared, mention that too, because it often changes what we would recommend.

Will you actually tell me if it is not worth doing?

Regularly, and it happens more than people expect. A naturally aspirated petrol with very little margin in its software, a car with a stored fault, or a vehicle covering almost no mileage are all cases where we would rather say no. Taking money for work that does not repay you is a short term arrangement, and we would sooner have the awkward conversation first.

Do you come out this far east?

Yes. Broughton is roughly nineteen miles east of the workshop in Lutterworth, which makes it a planned trip rather than a call in, so we fix a proper time with you instead of offering a loose window. The work is done wherever the vehicle sits, and bringing it over to Lutterworth is equally fine if that suits you better.

Most of my driving is the short run into Kettering. Is that a problem?

For a petrol, not particularly. For a diesel it is worth thinking about, because a filter needs the exhaust hot for a sustained period to clear itself and three miles may not provide that. It does not make the car wrong for you, but it does mean giving it a longer run occasionally rather than waiting for a warning light to demand one.

How long are you with the car?

Usually about an hour, sometimes ninety minutes. That covers reading and saving the original file, logging the engine on the road, writing and loading the map, and logging a second time to confirm the change did what it should. Certain vehicles are slower to read and write, and if yours is one you will know before the day.

Can you do it while I am at work?

Often, provided the car can be reached, driven out for the road work and left where it is parked afterwards, and whoever runs the site is content with it. Ask them beforehand rather than on the day, because a barrier or a permit is much easier to sort out in advance. Somebody needs to have the keys and be contactable.

Do you remove DPFs?

No, and not on any vehicle. It is an MOT failure and it makes the car unlawful to use on the road. We will not write software that pretends a missing filter is still there either. What we do is diagnose why yours is loading, clean it and run a forced regeneration, then confirm with live data that it has genuinely come back down.

What happens if you find a fault while you are here?

You get told, and we stop if stopping is the right call. Finding a leaking boost pipe or a sensor reading wrong halfway through is not a reason to press on regardless. It is a reason to sort that first and come back, and we would rather lose the trip than leave you with software layered over a problem.

Is it reversible?

Yes. Your factory file is read off and saved before anything at all is altered, so the car can be returned to exactly the state it arrived in. Putting it back takes very little time and there is no fuss about asking. That is what people want when selling, handing back a lease, or before a dealer looks at a warranty claim.

Does my insurer need telling?

Yes, and it is a brief phone call. A remap is a modification like any other and should be declared rather than assumed. Most insurers take it entirely in their stride once they know about it. The only time it becomes a genuine problem is when nobody was told and it comes up in the middle of a claim.

I brought my car in for a remap and DPF clean, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The team was professional, knowledgeable, and explained everything clearly before starting the work.
