What being twenty two miles out actually means for you
Some of the towns we cover are ten minutes away and can be squeezed into a gap. Kettering is not one of those. It is a proper run out, down to the Catthorpe end of the A14 and east from there, and the only sensible way to do it is to set aside the time for you rather than pretend otherwise and then keep you waiting.
In practice that is not much of an inconvenience, because it usually gets you a better appointment. You get a time that was allocated to you, and enough of it to read the file, write the map, load it and road test properly instead of watching the clock. What you do not get is a call at nine in the morning that turns into a visit at eleven.
So ring with a bit of notice rather than the night before, and say roughly when suits you. Mornings, afternoons, before a shift or after one, or a particular day of the week if your work is fixed. The whole job happens where the vehicle is parked
Nothing is done in halves or taken away. We arrive with the equipment, read the original calibration off the ECU and save it, write the map for that vehicle, load it, and road test before the keys go back to you. On a lot of vehicles the entire thing runs through the diagnostic port with nothing dismantled.
A few ECUs have to be opened and read directly on the bench rather than through the port. Where yours is one of those, you will be told at the enquiry stage rather than on the day, because that is the sort of thing which should change what you plan around instead of surprising you on your own driveway. It is not especially common, but it is not rare either, and it depends far more on the manufacturer and the year than on anything you could work out from the outside.
Typical time on site is an hour to ninety minutes. Your driveway, a works car park with permission, or a yard all work equally well. The car does not know or care where it happens to be standing, and the equipment and the files are identical to the ones used at the workshop. The only thing that genuinely matters is that the vehicle can sit still with the engine able to run, and that there is enough room to get at it safely.

Somewhere the vehicle can sit safely with room to work at it and the engine able to run, and a battery in decent health. The battery is the one that catches people out. Writing to an ECU needs stable voltage throughout, and a tired battery that drops away mid write is genuinely the most common reason a job has to be stopped and rescheduled.
If you already know yours is on its way out, or the vehicle has been turning over slowly on cold mornings, mention it when you book and we will bring support for it. That is a thirty second conversation which saves everybody a wasted appointment and a second trip out this far. Other than the battery and somewhere sensible to park, everything else comes with us, road test included.
It also helps a great deal to have the vehicle details right in advance. The exact model, the year, the engine, and whether anything has been changed mechanically since it left the factory. If someone has mapped it before, say so plainly rather than leaving it to be discovered, because we would far rather know at the enquiry stage than find an unfamiliar file sitting on the ECU when we read it on your driveway.

If it suits you better to make a trip of it, the workshop is at 3 Rugby Road in Lutterworth and you are welcome to bring the vehicle in. From Kettering that is the A14 west and then a short hop north, and plenty of people prefer it if they are heading that way anyway.

How long will you be at my house?

Some vehicles take longer to read and write than others, and if yours is one of the slower ones we will say so when you book rather than leave you guessing on the day.
Can you come to my workplace instead?
Yes, provided there is somewhere safe to work at the vehicle and whoever runs the site is happy with it. Plenty of people find it easier to have the car done while they are at work than to be at home waiting. Check with the site first, because turning up to find we cannot park next to the vehicle wastes an appointment for both of us.
What do you need me to have ready?
Room to work around the vehicle, the engine able to run, and a battery that is not on its last legs. That last one matters more than people expect, because the ECU needs stable voltage for the whole write and a failing battery collapsing partway through is the single most common reason a job gets stopped. Flag a tired battery when you book and we will bring support for it.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Most of the work is done from inside the vehicle through the diagnostic port, so rain is rarely a problem. If conditions are genuinely unsafe to work in, or the road test would not tell us anything useful, we will rearrange rather than rush it. Given Kettering is a booked visit anyway, moving a slot is a phone call rather than a drama.
Is the car road tested before you leave?
Yes, every time. Road testing is part of the job rather than an extra. We log what the engine is doing afterwards to confirm the changes did what they were meant to and that nothing is running outside sensible limits. If something is not right, it gets sorted before we hand the keys over, not after you have driven off.
What if something goes wrong while you are here?
Your original calibration is read off the ECU and saved before anything at all is written, so the vehicle can be returned to its factory file on the spot. That is standard practice on every job rather than a contingency, and it is also why you can have the car put back to standard later if you sell it or hand a lease back.
Can I bring the vehicle to you instead?
Yes. The workshop is at 3 Rugby Road in Lutterworth, and from Kettering it is a run west along the A14. Some people prefer that if they are heading in that direction anyway or would rather not have someone working on the drive. Ring first either way so there is a time set aside for you.

If they are at the same address and we know in advance, yes, and it makes far better sense than booking separate trips out here.
