Gearbox Tuning and TCU Remapping in Kettering
On an automatic, the transmission software decides how much of the engine you ever get to use. That shows up most clearly on the sort of driving Kettering generates: long settled cruises where the box should leave things alone, broken up by moments when you need a lower gear immediately.
Two opposite demands on the same journey
A long run along the A14 asks the gearbox to do almost nothing. Sit in top, keep the torque converter locked up, stop hunting, leave the engine alone. Then you reach a slower stretch, or a hill with a loaded lorry on it, or a slip road where you need to be at seventy before the lane ends, and suddenly you want the opposite: a gear down now, not after a pause while the box makes up its mind.

Smoothness usually wins, because smoothness is what sells cars, and the cost of that is hesitation at the moment you actually needed decisiveness.
Add the A43 into the week, with its roundabouts, its gradients and its slower single carriageway sections, and you get the other complaint we hear most often. A box that hunts between two gears on a climb because neither quite suits what the engine is doing, sitting at higher revs than it needs to, changing its mind every few seconds and never properly settling into anything at all.
What is actually adjustable in a TCU
The transmission control unit decides when to shift, how quickly and how firmly, how readily it will drop a gear when you ask for one, how long it holds a ratio before giving it up, and in many cases the clamping pressure applied to hold the drive. Those are software decisions rather than mechanical limits, which is why they can be revisited.
Tuned properly, that means shift points moved to suit the torque curve the engine actually has rather than the generic one it was calibrated around, a shorter delay before a kickdown, less hunting where the box was previously indecisive, and firmer clamping where the standard setting was marginal for the torque now being produced. None of that is exotic. It is asking the software to reflect the vehicle in front of it.
How firm the shifts feel is one of the settings rather than a fixed consequence, so it gets set to what you want. Some people want noticeably crisper changes, others want everything exactly as smooth as it was but with the hesitation taken out. Both are achievable and they are different requests, so say which you are after.

If you add torque to an engine and leave the transmission software untouched, the box is now making all of its decisions based on an engine that no longer exists. Shift points end up in the wrong places for the torque curve in front of them, and the clutches can be asked to hold more than the standard clamping pressure was ever set up for.
That is the main reason we raise the subject rather than a way of adding to the bill. On a mapped automatic, matching the transmission to the engine is usually the difference between a car that is quick on paper and one that is genuinely pleasant to use. It works the other way too: there is limited point sharpening the shifts if the engine underneath is still where it started. What is TCU remapping?

It is a different unit with a different file from the engine map.
My car hesitates when I ask for an overtake. Can that be improved?
That is one of the most common reasons people ring about it. The delay is usually the box deciding rather than anything mechanical, and kickdown response is one of the things that gets adjusted. On a dual carriageway where you have a gap and a finite amount of lane, removing a beat of indecision is worth more in practice than a power figure is.
The gearbox hunts between gears on a hill. Is that fixable?
Often, yes. Hunting is usually shift points sitting in an awkward place for the torque the engine actually makes, so the box keeps changing its mind because neither gear quite works. Moving those points to suit the real torque curve, and adjusting how long a ratio is held before it is given up, normally settles it. Tell us where it happens and what the car is doing when it does.
Do I need it if I have had an engine remap?
On an automatic it is usually worth considering. It is not compulsory, but on a mapped auto it is normally the sensible second half of the job.
Will it make the car feel harsh?
Only if that is what you want. How firm the shifts are is one of the settings being chosen rather than an unavoidable side effect. Some drivers want noticeably crisper changes, others want the smoothness exactly as it was with the hesitation removed. Is it safe for the gearbox?
Done properly it is generally kinder, because the transmission is matched to the engine it actually has rather than a theoretical one. Does it work on a manual?
No. A manual has no transmission control unit to map, because you are the transmission control unit. The engine remap is the entire job on a manual car, and there is nothing further to add on the gearbox side. It is a fair question and people ask it regularly, so it is worth saying rather than leaving you to guess.
Which gearboxes can you work on?

Can it be reversed?
Yes. The original transmission file is read and saved before anything is written, the same as with an engine map, so the car can be returned to its factory calibration whenever you want. That is what people generally want before selling, before handing back a lease, or before a dealer looks at anything under warranty.
Will it affect my warranty?
It can, in the same way an engine remap can, particularly if a transmission fault is later traced back to it. If the car is under manufacturer warranty, leased or on finance, say so at the enquiry stage and we will give you a straight answer about whether it is sensible to proceed now or wait. Sometimes the honest advice is to leave it alone for the time being.
Do I need to tell my insurer?
Yes. It is a modification to the vehicle and it should be declared, just as an engine map should. Most insurers deal with it without any difficulty once told. The risk is not the premium, it is the undeclared modification surfacing during a claim, and that is a conversation nobody wants to be having after an accident.
How long does it take and do you come to Kettering?
