ECU Remapping in Enderby

You are queuing to get out of a junction on the Leicester run, a gap appears, you ask for everything the car has, and it thinks about it for half a second before doing anything. Enderby sits under five miles from the city, and that half second is the complaint we hear about most from drivers here.

Four and a half miles of stopping and starting

Enderby is close enough to Leicester that the commute is short but rarely quick. Most of the mileage is spent at low speed, in low gears, accelerating in short bursts and then braking again, with the odd faster stretch in between. The engine barely settles anywhere and the gearbox, if it is an automatic, is being asked to make a decision every few seconds about something you have already changed your mind on.

That is the hardest kind of use for a calibration built around an average of every driver in every market. The manufacturer has weighted it heavily towards smoothness and towards protecting itself, and the cost of that caution is the hesitation, the upshift arriving just as you wanted the gear it was already in, and the flick between two ratios on a long roundabout approach.

None of that is broken in the mechanical sense. Nothing shows up on a scan, because nothing has actually failed and no component is out of specification. They are decisions written into software, and software can be reweighted towards how you drive on a Tuesday morning rather than towards the least demanding owner the manufacturer could imagine in the least helpful climate it could think of. That is the whole of what this work is.

What sits inside a transmission file

On many modern automatics the control unit governs when a shift happens, how fast it happens, how firmly it lands, how long a ratio is held before it gets given up, how readily it will drop two at once, and the clamping pressure holding the torque going through it. Those are all individual values, and on a good number of boxes they can be adjusted separately from one another rather than as a single setting.

Adjusted with some care, the car answers when you ask instead of a moment afterwards, holds a gear through a roundabout exit rather than upshifting halfway round it, and stops swapping between ratios on a slight rise. Firmness is one of the things being chosen, so sharper does not have to mean harsher. Plenty of people want quicker without any more thump, and that is a reasonable thing to want.

It varies enormously by manufacturer, by model year and sometimes by the individual unit, so nothing gets quoted until the exact vehicle has been checked. If yours is one where nothing worthwhile can be altered, you will be told that and it stops there. On a manual there is no transmission control unit at all, so the engine map is the whole of the job.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across Enderby and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

The engine side on a short commute

Taken on its own, an engine map for a car used like this is aimed low down. The intent is a car that responds early and pulls cleanly from the sort of speeds you leave a junction at, so you are not having to work it hard to keep pace with traffic that never settles. That tends to be a more relaxed car to sit in every morning, which is worth more day to day than any figure on a printout.

If the car is an automatic, the two halves belong together rather than one after the other. Add torque and leave the transmission software alone and the box is now making every decision based on an engine that no longer exists, with shift points chosen for a torque curve it no longer has. There is more on that under gearbox tuning in Leicester, and it gets raised at the enquiry stage rather than afterwards.

Diesels used on this pattern also need a word about the filter. Journeys of four or five miles give it very little chance to get hot enough for long enough to clear itself, and a regeneration that starts and then gets cut short when you park can leave things worse than they were. If warning lights have been appearing, that is a diagnostic job with live data before it is a tuning one, and the two should not be confused with each other.

Getting to Enderby, Fosse Park and Thurlaston

The workshop is on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, a bit over nine miles south of you, so this is a straightforward run rather than a planned expedition. The work is done where the vehicle already is, and the road test happens on the roads it actually lives on, which is more useful than somebody else's test route on the far side of the county. Allow an hour, occasionally ninety minutes.

Fosse Park and Thurlaston are covered by this page. Narborough is barely a mile away with its own page, and Whetstone, Blaby and Broughton Astley all have theirs within four miles. If you would rather drive down to Lutterworth, that works too, and there is more on how the visit runs under mobile ECU remapping in Leicester.

Remapping in Enderby: your questions answered

What is gearbox or TCU remapping, exactly?

The transmission control unit is a separate computer from the engine ECU, with its own software, and it decides how your automatic behaves. Remapping it changes those decisions: shift timing, shift speed, how long a gear is held, how willing it is to kick down. It does not alter how much power the engine makes. The two are often done together but they are genuinely separate jobs.

My car hesitates pulling out of junctions. Can that be improved?

Usually, if the delay is a software decision rather than something mechanical. The pause before a kickdown is deliberate, chosen for smoothness and for protecting the box from every possible driver. Reducing it is one of the main things this work does. If the hesitation comes with slipping, flaring revs or odd noises, that is a different conversation and it would be looked at first.

Will it make the car feel jerky?

Only if that is what you ask for. How firmly a change lands is one of the values being set, so a quicker shift does not have to be a harder one. Tell us how you want the car to feel and that is the direction it gets written in. Most people on a commute like yours want sharper timing with no more thump than standard.

I drive a manual. Does any of this apply?

The engine map does, the gearbox part does not. A manual has no transmission control unit, so there is no software governing shifts to change. If somebody has offered to tune the gearbox on your manual car, it is worth asking them precisely what they intend to write to and what they expect it to achieve, because the answer tends to be revealing.

How far is Enderby from you?

A little over nine miles. The workshop is on Rugby Road in Lutterworth and you are north of us, with Leicester under five miles the other way from you. It is an easy run, so timing tends to be flexible. The normal arrangement is that we come to the car, but bringing it down to Lutterworth is equally fine if that suits.

Do you cover Fosse Park, Thurlaston and Narborough?

Fosse Park and Thurlaston are covered by this page. Narborough is just over a mile away and has a page of its own, as do Whetstone at under two miles, Blaby at a shade over two, and Broughton Astley at four. All of them are within a few minutes of Enderby, so the arrangements are identical whichever applies to you.

Is changing the transmission software safe for the box?

Done for the specific vehicle and kept inside what the unit was built to handle, it is generally kinder than leaving a mapped car alone, because the box ends up matched to the engine it actually has. Done with a generic file and no thought, it is not. The condition of the box gets asked about first, because sharpening a tired transmission accelerates a problem rather than solving one.

Can both the engine and the gearbox go back to standard?

Yes, both. The original files are read off each control unit and stored before anything is written, so either or both can be returned to the factory calibration. That matters for a dealer visit, a sale or a lease return. It is quick to do and there is no reluctance about it, because a job that could not be undone would not be offered in the first place.

My diesel keeps warning me about the filter. Is that related?

It is separate, and it needs dealing with first. Short trips of four or five miles rarely let a filter get hot enough for long enough to clear itself properly, so the loading builds. That is a diagnostic job using live data, followed by a proper clean and a forced regeneration. Removing, blanking or emulating a DPF, an EGR or an AdBlue system is not something we do.

What should I tell you when I ring?

Make, model, year, engine and whether it is automatic or manual, plus whether any engine work has already been done to it. Mention warning lights, recent garage visits and anything that feels wrong. On an automatic, describe what annoys you about how it shifts, because that description is what the transmission file ends up being written towards.

Gave me multiple options for my map, if I wasn’t happy with it, sorted me out with a map until I was happy, top bloke very talkative and friendly, highly recommend
