Mobile ECU Remapping in Leicester

In a city the size of Leicester, the annoying part of getting work done on a car is rarely the work. It is getting across town to drop it off, getting back, and then doing the whole thing again in reverse. So we bring the equipment to the vehicle instead.

Why a mobile visit suits a city better than a workshop slot

Drop a car at a unit on one side of Leicester and you have committed to two journeys across the ring road, probably at the times of day when it is at its worst, plus whatever you do while you wait. For most people that is most of a day gone for a job that takes about an hour to ninety minutes.

Doing it at the vehicle removes all of that. The car sits where it already is and we work at it. No drop off, no lift home, no waiting room, no second trip back across town to collect it. For anyone working shifts, driving private hire, or running a trade vehicle they cannot spare, that difference is usually the entire reason they ring.

The work itself is identical either way. Same equipment, same original file read and saved first, same map written for that specific vehicle, same road test before the keys go back. The car has no idea where it happens to be standing while it is being done. The only genuine exception is the group of ECUs that have to come out and be read on the bench, and if yours is one of those we will tell you when you book instead of the two of us discovering it together on the day.

Where in Leicester we can actually work

The honest answer is: almost anywhere the vehicle can stand still safely for the duration with the engine able to run. A driveway, a work car park, a yard, a depot, a quiet residential street. What does not work well is a tight terraced street with cars passing inches away, or a permit bay where we are going to be moved on halfway through writing to an ECU.

If you are not sure whether where you park is suitable, say so when you ring and describe it. It takes thirty seconds to sort out and it is far better than us both discovering the problem on the day. Quite often the answer is that a relative's drive a mile away, or the car park at work, makes the whole thing straightforward.

Road testing is part of the job rather than an optional extra, and it happens before you get the keys back. Leicester is a convenient place for it, because the mix of city roads and the M1 at junction 21 lets us look at both halves of the picture without going far: how the vehicle behaves pulling away and changing load in traffic, then how it sits under sustained running at speed. A map proved in only one of those two conditions has really only been half proved.

Not sure your parking is suitable?Describe where the vehicle lives when you ring. It takes half a minute to work out and saves a wasted visit for both of us.

Getting to you from the Lutterworth workshop

The workshop is on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, roughly fourteen miles south of Leicester. That is a straight run up the M1 to junction 21 or across country on the A426, so this is a comfortable distance rather than an edge of range one, and getting to most parts of the city is uncomplicated. It also means we are not watching the clock to get back, which matters more than it sounds on the occasions when a job takes slightly longer than expected.

A typical job is about an hour to ninety minutes on site. That covers reading and saving the original calibration, writing the map for your specific vehicle, loading it, and logging or road testing afterwards to confirm it has done what it was meant to. Some ECUs take longer to read and write than others, and if yours is one of the ones that has to come out and go on the bench we will tell you that when you book rather than on the day.

You are also welcome to bring the vehicle to the workshop instead if that genuinely suits you better, and a fair number of people do prefer it, particularly if parking where they live is awkward or they would rather not have work going on outside the house. It makes no difference whatsoever to the job or the result, so the only question worth asking is which is less hassle for you. Have a look at what we do, or get in touch with the vehicle details and we will work it out between us.

What we need you to have ready

A battery in decent health is the one that matters. Writing to an ECU needs stable voltage throughout, and a tired battery is comfortably the most common reason a job has to be paused part way. If you already know yours is on its way out, or the car has been standing, mention it when you book and we will bring support for it rather than find out at the worst moment.

Beyond that it is the keys, somewhere sensible for the vehicle to sit as described above, and a car or van that starts and runs under its own power. Everything else arrives with us, so there is nothing for you to buy, borrow or set up beforehand. If the vehicle currently will not start, or is only going with the help of a jump pack, that is worth mentioning when you ring, because it turns a mapping visit into something that needs looking at first.

It also helps to be straightforward about the vehicle's history. Existing fault codes, a previous map from someone else, recent work, a service that is overdue. None of those are necessarily a problem, but they change what we do and we would much rather know in advance. If you want a sense of what the map itself involves, performance remapping in Leicester goes through it, and there is also the ECU remapping page for Leicester.

Mobile ECU Remapping in Leicester: your questions answered

What does mobile remapping actually involve?

We come to wherever the vehicle is parked with everything needed. The original calibration is read off the ECU and saved, the map is written for that specific vehicle, loaded, and then logged or road tested before we hand the keys back. It is the complete job, done on site, rather than a partial version of a workshop visit.

Is a mobile remap as good as one done in a workshop?

It is the same work with the same equipment and the same files, so yes. The only genuine exception is the group of ECUs that have to be removed and read on the bench, and we will tell you in advance if yours is one of those. Everything else is done through the diagnostic port and the vehicle does not care where it is standing.

How far is Leicester from you?

Around fourteen miles. The workshop is on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, so it is the M1 to junction 21 or the A426 across. Leicester is comfortably inside the area we cover rather than at the edge of it, which means getting to you is straightforward and we are not rushing to get back.

How long will you need the vehicle for?

Usually about an hour to ninety minutes, depending on the vehicle and how the ECU is accessed. That is the whole visit, not just the writing part. For a lot of people in Leicester that means it fits into a shift change, a lunch break or the time the car would otherwise be sitting on the drive doing nothing.

Can you come to my workplace?

Yes, provided there is somewhere we can safely work at the vehicle and whoever runs the site is happy with it. Work car parks are often better than home for this, particularly if you live somewhere with permit parking or a narrow street. Check with whoever manages the site first so nobody is surprised.

What if it is raining?

Most of the work is done from inside the vehicle through the diagnostic port, so weather is rarely the deciding factor. If conditions genuinely make it unsafe or impractical we will rearrange rather than rush it. A job done badly because someone wanted to get out of the rain is not a saving for anyone.

Does my battery need to be good?

It needs to be healthy enough to hold stable voltage for the duration, yes. This is the single most common reason a job gets interrupted. If the battery is old, the car has been standing, or you have had slow starting recently, tell us when you book and we will come prepared rather than discovering it halfway through a write.

What happens if something goes wrong while you are there?

Your original file is read and saved before anything at all is written, so the vehicle can be put straight back to its factory calibration on the spot. That is the whole reason it is done in that order rather than as an afterthought.

Can you still road test it if you come to me?

Yes, and it is part of the job rather than an optional extra. Leicester is actually a convenient place for it, because within a few miles you have slow city roads for low speed behaviour and the M1 at junction 21 for sustained running. Both matter, and checking only one of them tells you half the story.

Do you do vans and commercials on the same basis?

Yes, and for working vehicles the mobile service is usually the whole argument, because the van never has to leave the yard and nobody loses a working day. There is more detail on [van and commercial remapping in Leicester](/services/van-and-commercial-remapping/leicester/) if that is what you are ringing about.

Can I bring the vehicle to you instead?

Of course. The workshop is on Rugby Road in Lutterworth and some people simply prefer to bring it in, particularly if parking where they live is awkward. It makes no difference to the work or the result, so pick whichever is less hassle for you.

How do I book, and what should I tell you?

Ring or message 07773 694570, or send an enquiry through the contact form. Useful things to include: the vehicle and engine, roughly what mileage it does and on what sort of roads, where in Leicester it will be parked, and anything you already know about its condition or history. That is normally enough for us to give you a straight answer before you commit.
