ECU Remapping in Great Oakley

This page has spent a long time appearing near the top of Google for people searching around Great Oakley, and almost nobody has ever clicked it. That is fair enough. It said nothing that Corby, Geddington or Pipewell could not have read on any other page. So here is the useful version.

The honest reason this page was rewritten

Six hundred and twenty one town pages on this site were generated from one template, and this was one of them. The search data says it was doing well, showing up high for people looking for a mapper near Great Oakley, and that virtually none of them clicked through. A page can be found easily and still be worthless. This version is written for somebody here deciding whether to ring, rather than to fill a slot in a list.

Here is what is actually true about the place. Great Oakley sits under two miles from Corby and less than five from Kettering, with Northampton the best part of eighteen miles off. Our workshop is twenty miles west of you, on Rugby Road in Lutterworth. This page now also covers Geddington, Little Oakley, Newton and Pipewell, none of which has anybody writing maps on the doorstep either.

Twenty miles east, so the visit gets planned rather than squeezed in

Twenty miles is not far, but it is far enough that we will not pretend we can be with you within the hour. Trips out to this corner of Northamptonshire get booked into a day rather than slotted into a gap, and they are often paired with another job close by. Corby is under two miles away and Cottingham under three, so if somebody nearby wants the same thing done, say so, because it makes the timing easier for everyone.

What happens once we arrive is the same wherever we go. The vehicle needs somewhere it can sit for roughly an hour to ninety minutes with the engine able to run and the driver door able to open properly. A driveway is ideal, a yard is fine, and a village road with room to work is usually fine too. Describe where it parks when you ring and you will get a yes or a no on the spot.

The one thing that stops a booking dead is a weak battery. Writing to a control unit needs steady voltage from beginning to end, and a battery that turns the engine over perfectly well can still sag partway through a write. If yours is old, or the vehicle has been standing for a few weeks, mention it in advance. It is a far cheaper problem to sort before we set off than it is halfway through the job.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across great-oakley and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

The question we get asked most around Corby, and the answer to it

People ring about diesel particulate filters, EGR valves and AdBlue systems constantly, and often what they are really asking is whether we will get rid of them. We will not. Those systems get diagnosed, cleaned, force regenerated and repaired here. Taking one off, blanking it, or writing software that pretends a missing part is still fitted, is an MOT failure and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road afterwards.

If your filter is genuinely struggling, it is worth dealing with properly, because there is usually a cause sitting behind it and that cause will still be there after any software change. How the vehicle gets used week to week matters as much as the part itself does. There is more on the approach under DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Corby, and all of it begins with reading the vehicle instead of guessing at it.

Vans come up almost as often as cars. Car remaps start from £129, and vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle because the work genuinely differs between them. If you drive a van for a living, the useful conversation is normally about how it behaves loaded and on a hill rather than about peak figures, and there is more under van and commercial remapping.

What actually gets written into the ECU

The original calibration is read off the control unit and stored before a single thing is altered. The engine is then logged on the road, so the file gets written against what your vehicle is genuinely doing rather than what a generic file assumes about it. Fuelling, boost and timing are adjusted for the way you use it, the map is loaded, and it is logged again afterwards to confirm the change landed where it was supposed to.

Because that original file is kept, the vehicle can be returned to exactly how it was at any point later on. People want that when they sell, when a lease vehicle goes back, or when a dealer wants everything standard before they will look at something. A map also repairs nothing. A tired turbo or a sticking valve will still be tired or sticking afterwards with more asked of it, so mention warning lights before anything gets booked.

Remapping in great-oakley: your questions answered

Is Great Oakley too far out for a mobile mapper?

No, it is just a trip that gets arranged rather than improvised. You are twenty miles east of the Lutterworth workshop, which is comfortably within range, but not somewhere we happen to be passing. Give us a couple of options on days and times and one of them will usually work. If somebody else nearby wants a vehicle doing as well, the same visit can often cover both.

You admit this page used to rank without getting clicks. Why say that out loud?

Because it explains what changed. The old version was one of hundreds of near identical pages with the town name swapped in, and people who found it clearly took one look and went elsewhere. Pretending otherwise would be the same problem in a different font. If we are willing to be blunt about our own website, you can reasonably expect the same about your vehicle.

Will you take the DPF off if I pay more for it?

No, at any price. We diagnose, clean, force regenerate and repair particulate filters, EGR systems and AdBlue systems, and that is where the line sits. Removing or blanking one fails an MOT and makes the vehicle unlawful to drive on the road. If that is what the call is about, we would sooner tell you now than take a deposit and have the argument later.

How long are you at the vehicle for?

Usually an hour to ninety minutes. That covers reading and saving the factory calibration, logging the engine on a road run, writing and loading the map, and logging again afterwards to check the result. Some control units are slower to read and write than others, and where yours is one of them we will flag it when the booking is made rather than on the day.

Do Geddington, Newton, Little Oakley and Pipewell count as covered?

They do, and that is deliberate. This page now serves those villages as well as Great Oakley itself, because none of them has a mapper nearby and all of them are a short hop once the van is already out this way. Say which one you are in when you ring and it gets confirmed before anything is booked in.

Can I bring the vehicle to you instead of you coming out?

Yes. The workshop is at 3 Rugby Road in Lutterworth, roughly twenty miles west of Great Oakley. Some people prefer that, particularly if there is nowhere sensible for the vehicle to sit at home. Most people out this way find it easier to have us come to them, but both work and it makes no difference to how the map is written.

Does a remap need declaring on my insurance?

Yes. It is a modification and belongs on the policy alongside anything else you have changed. Insurers are generally unbothered once they have been told, and the cost implication is often nothing at all. The version that causes real trouble is the undeclared one that comes to light while a claim is being looked at, which is the worst possible moment for it.

My van is usually loaded. Does that change what you write?

It changes what is worth aiming for. A van that spends its life carrying weight benefits most from pull lower down, where you are actually asking something of it, rather than from anything that only shows up near the top of the rev range. We log it as it is normally used, which is why the road run matters more than the engine code does.

What does it cost?

Car remaps from £129. Vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle, because the work involved genuinely varies between them and quoting a single figure blind would be misleading. Ring with the make, model, year and engine and you will get a straight number for your vehicle rather than a range that narrows once somebody is standing on your driveway.

What would make you refuse to write a map on the day?

A battery that cannot hold steady voltage through a write, a stored fault nobody mentioned beforehand, or a mechanical problem that a map would simply load further. None of those are awkwardness for its own sake. Writing software onto something already struggling moves the failure later rather than preventing it, and you would rightly hold us responsible when it arrives.

Just had a remap done by Mark and I couldn't be more happy. he's very informative on what he's doing and he's a really nice chap to speak to while he's working on the car. Couldn't recommend his services more.
