ECU Remapping in Corby
Corby runs a heavier vehicle mix than most of the towns on our list. The industrial and distribution estates mean a lot of what is parked here works for a living, and a vehicle that earns money asks different questions of a calibration than one that does the school run. This page covers both.
Who this page is written for
A former steel town with large industrial and distribution estates produces a particular sort of vehicle parc. Alongside ordinary family cars there are panel vans, tippers, flatbeds and pickups, most of them carrying something, many of them covering real weekly distance on the A43 and the A6003. What those owners want from software is rarely a headline figure. It is the vehicle feeling less like hard work with weight on board, and costing slightly less to run.
Cars here get the same treatment and the same conversation, just with a different brief. This page also covers Gretton and Stanion, and Great Oakley, Cottingham, Drayton and Ashley all sit within a few miles of where we would already be, so there is no practical difference in how a visit gets arranged depending which of them you are in.
If you are on the Kettering side of things, that town is about six miles away and has its own pages. Use whichever is closest to where the vehicle actually stands, because that is the only thing about the job it changes. Northampton and Leicester are both around twenty miles off in the other directions, so Corby genuinely is the centre of this corner of the area rather than an outpost of somewhere else.
Twenty five miles east, said plainly
Corby is the furthest place we cover, roughly twenty five miles east of the workshop on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, and it sits at the outer boundary of the area rather than comfortably inside it. We do come out. What we cannot do is treat it as a call we can slot into a gap at short notice, so a date gets agreed properly rather than promised loosely.
In practice that means the phone call carries more weight here than it does closer to home. Before anyone sets off we want the make, model, year and engine, what the vehicle does in a normal week, whether anything is showing on the dash, and where it will be standing. That conversation regularly changes the advice, and occasionally it ends with us saying the work is not worth your money, which is a much better outcome than discovering it on your yard.
It also means being straightforward about what the distance does not change. The equipment, the method and the time on site are the same here as they are seven miles from the workshop. The only thing affected by the mileage is how the day gets planned. Nothing gets rushed because of how far we have come, and nothing gets left out to make the journey home easier.
Corby is covered, but check the date firstRing with the vehicle and what it does in a week. We will tell you honestly what a map would change and when we could get there.

The original calibration is read off the control unit and stored before anything else happens, so there is a known starting point and a route back. The vehicle is then logged on the road so the engine can be seen working rather than guessed at. Fuelling, boost and timing are adjusted for what the vehicle is actually asked to do, and it is logged again afterwards to confirm the change landed where it was meant to and that nothing is running outside sensible limits.
Where that change shows up matters more than any number. On a working vehicle it is the middle of the rev range, because that is where a loaded engine spends its day, and the result is fewer gear changes on a gradient and less pedal needed to hold a speed. On a car it is the same band, felt as the vehicle answering sooner when you ask it for something. Neither of those is a figure worth quoting before seeing the vehicle, so we do not quote one.
A visit runs about an hour to ninety minutes. Because the original file is kept, the vehicle can go back to exactly how it was whenever you want, which matters most when something is being sold or handed back. On a working vehicle that comes up more often than owners expect, because lease returns and resale both tend to want everything standard, and putting it back is a short job rather than a negotiation.
Which of the six jobs you need
If the vehicle earns its living, the brief is built around weight, load and duty cycle rather than around how the thing feels empty, and that is set out on our van and commercial remapping in Corby page. If what you want is the fuel bill to move instead, the honest arithmetic, including the fuel burned while a vehicle is stationary on a site, sits on economy remapping in Corby.
If there is a warning light involved, the order reverses. A particulate filter that keeps loading, an EGR valve that has stuck or an AdBlue system counting down is a diagnostic job and it needs resolving before any software is written. That work is covered under DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Corby. We diagnose, clean, force regenerate and repair those systems, and we do not remove, blank or emulate any of them, because removal is an MOT failure and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road.
How a visit at this distance is arranged, including what makes a spot on an estate workable, is on mobile ECU remapping in Corby. Car remaps from £129. Vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle, because the work involved in a small van and a large one is genuinely different, and you will be given the figure for yours before committing to anything.
Remapping in Corby: your questions answered
Which villages and smaller places does this page cover?
Gretton and Stanion are covered here alongside Corby itself, and Great Oakley, Cottingham, Drayton and Ashley are all within a few miles. None of them is far enough off the route to make any practical difference to arranging a visit or to what the work involves. If you are unsure whether you fall inside it, say where the vehicle actually stands when you ring.
I am nearer Kettering. Which page should I use?
Kettering is about six miles from Corby and has its own set of pages, so use whichever town the vehicle is genuinely closest to. It makes no difference to the work itself, only to how the visit gets planned, and being on the nearer side of the two is worth mentioning because it can make finding a date easier.
Do you work on cars here as well as working vehicles?
Yes, and plenty of the jobs around Corby are ordinary cars. The industrial side of the town shapes the vehicle mix but it does not limit what we take on. The difference is in the brief rather than the process: a car gets written around how you want it to drive, a working vehicle around what it carries and how its day is shaped.
What is the most common reason a job cannot be finished on the day?
A tired battery. Writing to a control unit needs stable voltage for the whole process, and a battery that starts the vehicle perfectly well can still drop away part way through a write. It is the single most frequent reason work has to be stopped. If you already suspect yours is weak, or the vehicle has been standing, say so when you book.
If I sell the vehicle, does the map go with it?
It stays on the vehicle unless somebody takes it off, so the buyer inherits it. Some sellers prefer to return the vehicle to its original calibration before a sale, particularly on something going to a dealer or a lease company, and that is a quick job because the factory file was stored before anything was written. Either way, be straight with the buyer about it.
Is the job different on a car and on a van?
The method is identical: read the original, log the engine on the road, write for that specific vehicle, log again. What differs is what the file is built around. A van is calibrated for how it behaves loaded, at the engine speeds it actually works at, which is a genuinely different target from a car being written for response. Pricing differs for the same reason.
How do I know whether my vehicle can be read through the diagnostic socket?
Most can, but a minority of control units have to be opened and read directly instead, which depends on the manufacturer and the unit rather than the age of the vehicle. It is exactly the sort of thing worth establishing before somebody drives twenty five miles, so give us the make, model, year and engine on the phone and we will check it in advance.
Do you cover anywhere further east than Corby?
Corby is the outer edge of what we cover, so beyond it the answer is usually no. If you are just past it, ring and ask rather than assuming either way, and you will get a straight response. We would far rather say no on the phone than take a booking we cannot serve properly and let you down on the day.
Does the vehicle need a service before it is mapped?
It does not need one specially, but a vehicle that is badly overdue is worth sorting first. You are asking the engine to work slightly harder for the same result, and tired oil, a choked filter or a neglected service history all make that a less sensible proposition. If the vehicle is broadly up to date and running properly, there is nothing extra to do beforehand.
What happens if you decide the work is not worth doing?
Then we say so and nothing gets written. That judgement is usually reached on the phone, which is why the call matters, but occasionally it comes from what the logging shows once we are there. Either way you are not talked into something that will not do anything useful for how you actually use the vehicle.
