ECU Remapping in Cottingham

Most of what you drive around Cottingham is either the two and a half miles into Corby or something a good deal longer. That split is the useful thing to know before anybody maps a vehicle here, and it is where this page starts. Our workshop sits about nineteen miles west of you, in Lutterworth.

What a map changes, and where you feel it

Start at the driver's seat rather than the spec sheet. On the roads around Cottingham you spend a lot of time in third and fourth, pulling away from junctions, getting past something slow on a single carriageway, climbing back up to speed after a bend. That is the part of the rev range a properly written map improves most, and it is the change most drivers notice day to day. Less reluctance in the middle of the range, not raw speed.

Every map we write is built for the vehicle in front of us. We read the original calibration off the ECU and keep it, log the engine on the road so we can see what it is genuinely doing under load, adjust fuelling, boost and timing for the way that vehicle gets used, then log again afterwards to check the change did what it was meant to. There is more detail on the performance remapping page for Corby.

Whether it is worth doing at all depends on the vehicle and on you. A turbo diesel that spends its life loaded or towing usually has the most to gain from it. A small petrol engine driven gently has considerably less, and we would rather say that on the phone than take the booking anyway. Tell us what you drive and what irritates you about it now, and you will get a straight answer either way.

Corby at two and a half miles, and everywhere else at twenty

Cottingham sits close enough to Corby that the run in barely registers as a journey, roughly two and a half miles to the edge of it. Kettering is a little over seven. After that the figures jump, with Leicester eighteen miles away and most other destinations further still. So a normal week here tends to divide into very short local hops and the occasional proper run, without a great deal in between.

That pattern matters more than people expect. A modern diesel does its best work warm, and a two mile trip never gets it anywhere near. If the short hops are most of what your vehicle does, the sensible expectation from a map is a better feeling engine rather than a dramatic fuel figure, because savings need distance before they show up at all. If you do a longer run most weeks, economy remapping has far more to work with.

Being clear about which of those two you are is the single most useful thing you can tell us before we come out. It changes what the map gets aimed at and it changes what we tell you to expect from it. Chasing fuel figures on a vehicle that only ever does short hops is a reliable way to end up disappointed by a perfectly good piece of work.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across Cottingham and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

Warning lights, and the thing we will not do

If a light is on, that gets dealt with before anybody talks about a map. We look at live data rather than reading the stored fault and stopping there, because a fault code tells you which system is unhappy and almost nothing about why. Differential pressure, the soot and ash loading the ECU believes it has, exhaust temperature, attempted regenerations set against completed ones, and whether a sensor, an injector or a leak is sitting behind the lot.

What we do not do is remove, blank, delete or emulate a particulate filter, an EGR system or AdBlue. Taking a filter out is an MOT failure and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, and writing software that pretends a missing part is still fitted is not work we will put our name to. We diagnose, clean, force a regeneration and repair what has actually failed, and we say plainly when a filter is too far gone to save. DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Corby covers the process.

A map is not a repair, and that is worth saying twice. On a healthy engine, better controlled fuelling can mean less soot produced in the first place, which helps the filter keep on top of things. On an engine with a real fault, it changes nothing about the fault. Get the vehicle right first, then map it. That order is not us being awkward about it, it is simply what works.

Coming out to Cottingham

We are mobile, and Cottingham is a shade under nineteen miles east of the workshop in Lutterworth. That is far enough that a visit gets planned into a day rather than squeezed onto the end of one, so ring with a bit of notice and we will find a time that suits you. Once we are with you the job usually runs an hour to ninety minutes, done at the vehicle, wherever it happens to be parked.

This page now covers Carlton Purlieus, East Carlton, Middleton and Rockingham as well as Cottingham itself. It is a compact patch and that helps, because Great Oakley is under three miles from you and Ashley about the same again. If a neighbour or somebody at work wants something looked at in the same week, a trip out here becomes a great deal easier to arrange, so it is always worth mentioning when you call.

On the day we need somewhere the vehicle can sit with a door open and the engine able to run, and a battery in decent health. Writing to an ECU wants steady voltage from start to finish, and a battery that starts the car without complaint can still sag part way through the process. If the vehicle has been standing unused for a while, tell us and we will come prepared for that.

Remapping in Cottingham: your questions answered

How far out is Cottingham for a mobile visit?

It is close to nineteen miles east of the Lutterworth workshop, which puts it well inside the area we cover but not on the doorstep. In practice that means the visit is arranged for a particular day rather than fitted in at short notice. Ring, say roughly when suits you, and we will put it in. Most people find a few days notice is plenty.

Is there any advantage in driving to you instead?

Only if you were heading that way regardless. The workshop is on Rugby Road in Lutterworth and you are welcome to bring the vehicle, but for a round trip of nearly forty miles you gain very little. The mobile visit exists so the vehicle stays where it lives and you carry on with your day while the work happens.

What actually happens when you write a map?

We read the original calibration off the ECU and save it first. Then we log the engine on the road to see how it behaves under load, adjust fuelling, boost and timing to suit how you use the vehicle, load the result and log again to confirm it did what was intended. It is written for your vehicle, not pulled off a shelf by model name.

I only really drive into Corby. Will a remap save me fuel?

Probably not much, and it would be wrong to promise otherwise. Fuel savings come from settled running at steady speeds, and a two and a half mile trip never gets there. What you would notice on those journeys is the engine pulling more willingly from low revs. If that is what you are after, good. If you are after miles per gallon, be honest with yourself about the mileage first.

Can you take the filter off so the light stops coming back?

No. Removing a particulate filter is an MOT failure and it makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, and we will not write software that claims a missing component is still there. What we will do is find out why the light keeps returning, clean the filter, run a forced regeneration and put right whatever is causing it. If it is past cleaning, we will tell you it needs replacing.

My EGR valve keeps sticking. Is that something you handle?

We diagnose it and repair it. What we do not do is blank it off or write it out of the software, for the same reasons as the filter. A sticking valve usually has a cause worth finding, whether that is carbon build up, a vacuum or electrical fault, or something upstream producing more soot than it should. Fixing the cause lasts longer than hiding the symptom.

Do you map vans and pickups as well as cars?

Yes, and they are often the vehicles that benefit most, particularly if they run loaded or tow. The approach is the same custom process, aimed at low and mid range pull rather than a headline figure, because that is what makes a working vehicle easier to drive. Vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle rather than listed at a set figure, so ring with the make, model and engine and we will tell you where you stand.

How much of my day does it take?

Around an hour to ninety minutes at the vehicle for a map, which covers saving the original file, road logging, writing and loading, then logging again to check the result. Diagnostic work is less predictable, because how long it takes depends entirely on what the live data shows once we start looking. We will tell you what we are finding as we go.

Can the vehicle go back to standard afterwards?

Yes, at any point. The factory calibration is read off and stored before a single change is written, so putting it back is straightforward. People ask for it ahead of a sale, a lease return, or a main dealer visit where they would rather the vehicle read standard. You do not need to justify the request, just get in touch and we will arrange it.

Should I tell my insurer?

Yes. A remap counts as a modification and belongs on the policy in the same way any other change to the vehicle does. Most insurers take the information and carry on without any drama. The situation that causes genuine problems is an undeclared map surfacing during a claim, and that is not worth the risk for the sake of one phone call.
