ECU Remapping in Market Harborough

Market Harborough is a proper Leicestershire market town, and most of the miles that leave it head somewhere else. Corby is a little over nine miles away, Kettering just past ten, and our workshop in Lutterworth sits not quite twelve to the west. That is a diet of open A road running rather than town centre crawling, and it should shape the map.

The mileage leaves town before it does anything interesting

Ask most people here what the car actually does in a week and the honest answer is a run out. Corby at a shade over nine miles, Kettering at ten, Lutterworth and the roads west at twelve. Very little of that is first and second gear work. It is third, fourth and fifth on roads where you are either settled at a cruise or waiting for a gap to appear behind something slow.

Factory calibrations are not written for that in particular. They are written to be safe across every market the model is sold in, on fuel we never see here, for owners who service on time and owners who do not. The margin left in to cover all of that is real, and a file written for one car on the fuel it genuinely runs on can use a fair amount of it without asking anything new of the hardware.

Which is why the first question is about your week rather than your car. Somebody towing out towards Kettering most weekends wants a different shape of torque from somebody who does a short run in the morning and one longer trip on a Sunday. Same badge, same engine, two quite different files. If running cost is the part that interests you, there is more on economy remapping in Lutterworth.

Where the change turns up, and where it does not

On an A road diet the useful part of a map is the middle. Pulling out of a junction onto something already moving at fifty. Closing a gap to overtake without dropping two gears and thinking about it several seconds in advance. Holding a gradient at a steady throttle instead of the box shuffling about behind you. That band, from just off idle to roughly the middle of the range, is where nearly all of your real driving actually happens.

What we will not do is sell you the top of the rev counter. That last section looks impressive drawn on a graph and you visit it about twice a year. Nor will we quote a power figure before we have read your car, because a number written down before anyone has looked at the original calibration is a guess with a decimal point in it.

There are also cars we turn away. A worn clutch, a turbo that already sounds unhappy, an intermittent fault nobody has chased down. Adding torque to any of those brings the problem forward rather than fixing it, and we would sooner say so on the phone than take the money and leave you worse off. Get the fault dealt with, then ring back.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across Market Harborough and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

Diesel owners, filters and the part people get told wrong

Plenty of the diesels around Market Harborough are doing exactly the mileage a particulate filter likes. Twenty minutes of settled running gets the exhaust hot enough for the filter to clear itself, and cars living that way rarely cause anybody trouble. The ones that do are usually the ones whose owner changed jobs and now does four cold miles a day and nothing else.

To be plain about it, we do not remove, delete, blank or emulate a DPF, an EGR system or AdBlue on any vehicle. That is an MOT failure and it is unlawful to use on the road afterwards. What we do instead is diagnose with live data, clean properly, force a regeneration where the filter will accept one, and repair whatever is actually broken. DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Kettering covers how that side of it works.

A map is not a cure for a loaded filter either, and anybody telling you otherwise is selling something. If the light is on and the car has gone into limp mode, that is a diagnostic job first. Once it is healthy again, mapping it is a sensible conversation to have. In that order, and not the other way round.

Coming out to Market Harborough and the villages round it

We are mobile. The workshop is on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, not quite twelve miles west of you, so Harborough is one of the easier runs we do and we work wherever the car is sat. A driveway is perfect. Allow an hour to ninety minutes. The original file comes off the ECU and is stored before anything else happens, so the car can go back to factory software any time you ask for it.

This page also covers the villages spread around the town: Great Bowden, Little Bowden, Lubenham, Foxton, Marston Trussell, East Farndon, Theddingworth, Husbands Bosworth, Great Oxendon, Clipston, Sibbertoft, Sulby, Thorpe Langton and Dingley. If you are nearer Kibworth Harcourt, Ashley, Desborough or Harrington then those have pages of their own, and Kibworth Harcourt is around five miles up the road.

Corby is the closest of the larger towns we cover at a little over nine miles, with Kettering barely behind it. If you want to see how the same work reads for a bigger town, mobile ECU remapping in Corby goes through the on site process in more detail. Nothing about the job itself changes with the postcode, only how far we drive to get to it.

Remapping in Market Harborough: your questions answered

How far is Market Harborough from you?

Not quite twelve miles, straight east of the workshop on Rugby Road in Lutterworth. That makes it one of the shorter runs we do, so getting a slot is usually straightforward. We are a mobile service, so in almost every case we come to you and work on the car where it is parked. The workshop is there if you would sooner bring it in, and the job is identical either way.

I mostly do A road miles. Is a remap worth it?

That is the use a custom map suits best. The change sits through the middle of the rev range, which is where settled cruising and overtaking both live, so you feel it on the driving you already do every week. Less shuffling between gears on a gradient, less planning before you pull out of a junction. If you only ever crawled a mile to the shops, we would tell you it was not worth your money.

Will you tell me the power figure before you come out?

No, and be wary of anybody who will. A number quoted before the original calibration has been read off your particular car is a guess dressed up as a fact. What we will tell you is where in the rev range you should notice the difference and how it will feel doing the driving you have described to us. The figures people put in adverts are not the part you experience from the driver's seat.

Can you take the DPF off while you are there?

No. We do not remove, delete, blank or emulate DPF, EGR or AdBlue systems on any vehicle, on any map, for anybody. It is an MOT failure and it is unlawful to use the car on the road afterwards. What we can do is diagnose the filter properly with live data, clean it, force a regeneration where the filter will take one, and put right the underlying fault that is loading it up.

What does it cost?

Car remaps start from £129. Vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle, because the work involved varies far more between them. Ring with the make, model, year and engine and you will get the real figure for your car rather than a range to squint at. If we think the job is not worth doing on your vehicle, you will hear that on the phone rather than after we have arrived.

How long does it take on the day?

Budget an hour to ninety minutes. That covers reading and storing the original file, a road drive to log how the engine is behaving, writing and loading the new map, then a second drive to confirm it has done what it was meant to. Some control units read and write more slowly than others, and if yours is one of the slow ones we will mention it when you book rather than on the day.

Which villages does this page cover?

Great Bowden, Little Bowden, Lubenham, Foxton, Marston Trussell, East Farndon, Theddingworth, Husbands Bosworth, Great Oxendon, Clipston, Sibbertoft, Sulby, Thorpe Langton and Dingley, along with Market Harborough itself. Kibworth Harcourt and Ashley sit around four or five miles out, Desborough and Harrington about five, and each of those has a page of its own if you happen to be closer to one of them.

Can it be put back to standard?

Yes. The untouched original is read out of the ECU and stored before a single line of the new map goes anywhere near it, so the car can be returned exactly as it arrived whenever you want. People usually ask before selling, at the end of a lease, or before a main dealer looks at something unrelated. Putting it back takes very little time and does not need another long appointment.

Does it use more fuel?

That depends almost entirely on your right foot. Drive the way you drive now and a lot of cars use the same or a touch less, because the engine is doing the same work with less effort behind it. Drive the way the extra response tempts you to and it will cost you more. On the longer runs out of Market Harborough most people settle somewhere between the two without really thinking about it.

Is there anything you would refuse to map?

Yes, and fairly often. A slipping clutch, a turbo that already sounds unhappy, a fault code nobody has got to the bottom of, or a service history with a long gap in the middle of it. Extra torque does not create those problems but it will bring them to the surface sooner. We would rather say so on the phone, get the car sorted first, and do the map afterwards.

Had my car remapped by Mark, great friendly service. Took the time to explain to me what he was doing & gave me options on which kind of remap I’d like. Car feels so much quicker & feels a lot more responsive. Highly recommend.
