ECU Remapping in Kibworth Harcourt

Kibworth Harcourt is a village whose drivers cover real distance. Leicester is nearly nine miles, Market Harborough about five, Lutterworth ten and a half. Nothing here is round the corner, so the cars do settled miles on open road rather than crawling about, and that is the best possible case for a fuel saving map.

A village where every journey is a proper journey

Think about where you actually go from here. Work, the shops that are big enough to be worth the drive, the station, the school run if it is not the village one. Leicester at just under nine miles, Market Harborough at five, Wigston and Oadby at five and a half. Every one of those is long enough that the engine warms through, settles at a steady speed and stays there for a while.

That is the opposite of the problem cars have in the middle of a city, and it is why the conversation here is usually about fuel rather than filters. A vehicle doing that mileage on a fixed weekly pattern is buying diesel or petrol on a schedule, and any reduction in that repeats itself every week without you having to remember to do anything.

It also means the difference is felt in a particular place. A car that pulls willingly from lower in the rev range on an open road needs fewer downshifts and less right foot to hold the same speed. On this sort of route that is both nicer to drive and cheaper to run, which is not a combination you get everywhere.

Do the arithmetic before you spend anything

The question we ask first is not what you drive. It is how far, how often and on what sort of road. If you are doing a fixed run into Leicester or down to Market Harborough five days a week, the payback is short and you can work it out yourself in about a minute from what you know you spend on fuel. If the car does a couple of local trips and something longer at weekends, it will take a great deal longer and we would usually say leave it.

Car remaps from £129. Vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle. That is the only price we quote and there is nothing hidden behind it, because the work involved genuinely differs between a small car and a large van and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. You will have the figure for your own vehicle before you commit to anything, and if we think the money is better left in your pocket we will say so at that point rather than later.

What we will not do is put a percentage on the saving. Any figure offered before we have seen a vehicle is a guess, and the numbers that get advertised tend to be the best possible case on the most suitable engine, driven by somebody proving a point. Tell us your weekly mileage and we will do the sum with you honestly. Economy remapping in Leicester explains the reasoning in more depth.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across kibworth-harcourt and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

Know your weekly mileage? That single number decides whether an economy map is worth your money. Ring with it and we will do the sum with you.

What an economy biased map changes, and what it does not

Nothing gets turned down. An economy focused map moves usable pulling power further down the rev range, so the engine achieves the same result at lower revs and you naturally sit in a taller gear for longer. Fuel is burned in the gap between how hard the engine is working and how hard it needs to be, and that gap is what gets narrowed.

The process itself is identical to any other map we write. The original file is copied off the ECU and kept. The engine is logged on the road so we can see its real behaviour under load. Fuelling, boost and timing are adjusted for how the vehicle is used. Then it is logged a second time to confirm the change did what it was meant to and that nothing sits outside sensible limits.

If you would rather have the response than the frugality, that is a different bias and you should say so, because asking for maximum economy and then enjoying the extra pull is a reliable way to end up with neither. There is background on performance remapping if that is closer to what you want.

The area this page now covers

This page covers a wide spread of villages as well as Kibworth Harcourt itself, including Kibworth Beauchamp, Fleckney, Billesdon, Church Langton and East Langton, Burton Overy, Gumley and Illston on the Hill. If you are somewhere small nearby that is not on that list, ring anyway. The list is long and the boundaries are soft.

Where a bigger town is closer to you, it has its own page. Market Harborough and Oadby are both about five miles away and Wigston a little over five. We are ten and a half miles south west of you in Lutterworth, which makes this an easy area to reach. An hour or so at the car, ninety minutes at the outside, and it is done.

Remapping in kibworth-harcourt: your questions answered

How do I know whether a fuel saving map will pay for itself?

Work out what you spend on fuel in an ordinary week, then be honest about whether that week repeats. A fixed daily run into Leicester or down to Market Harborough makes the payback short and predictable. A car that does a few local trips and something longer at weekends will take far longer, and in that case we would usually tell you to leave it alone.

What does it cost?

Car remaps from £129. Vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle, because the work involved in a small car and a large van is genuinely different. We will give you the figure for your vehicle before you commit to anything, and if we think a map is a poor use of your money on that particular car, we will say so first.

Will an economy map make the car feel slower?

No. Nothing is reduced. The aim is to bring usable pulling power lower down the rev range so the engine does the same work at fewer revs in a taller gear. Most people describe the car as easier rather than slower, because the same journey needs fewer gear changes and less effort with your right foot to keep up with traffic.

Which vehicles get the most from it?

Turbocharged diesels covering consistent mileage on open roads, which describes a great many of the cars doing the daily run out of the Kibworths. The poorest case is a small petrol engine doing short cold trips, where nothing ever settles for long enough to matter. Tell us the engine and we will put yours honestly into one group or the other.

Do you come out to the villages, or only the bigger places?

We come to the villages. This page covers Kibworth Beauchamp, Fleckney, Billesdon, Church Langton, East Langton, Burton Overy, Gumley, Illston on the Hill and a number of others. We are ten and a half miles away in Lutterworth, so the whole area is comfortably within reach and we work wherever the vehicle is parked.

How long does the visit take?

An hour or so at the car, ninety minutes at the outside. That covers saving the original calibration, logging the engine on a road drive, writing and loading the map and then logging again to check the result. If your vehicle is one of the slower ones to read and write, we will tell you that when you book rather than on the day.

Can I have some performance as well as economy?

To a degree, and in truth every road map is a compromise. What we do is weight that compromise towards whichever one matters more to you, so it helps if you are clear about which it is. Asking for maximum frugality and then using the extra pull at every opportunity is the standard way to end up with neither of them.

Is it safe for the engine?

Yes, when it is written inside what the engine and drivetrain were built for, and an economy biased map generally asks less of an engine rather than more. We log before and after so we can see what is happening rather than assume it. A vehicle that is already unwell is a separate conversation and we would want that sorted first.

Does it need declaring to my insurer?

It does, whichever direction the map is aimed in. Economy or performance, it is still a modification to the vehicle and belongs on the policy. Most insurers deal with it in a two minute phone call without any fuss. It only ever causes trouble when nobody was told and it surfaces while a claim is being looked at.

Can it go back to standard if I sell the car?

Yes, and it is a quick job. We take a copy of what the manufacturer wrote and hang on to it, so the vehicle can be returned to factory software at any point. That is the normal request before a sale, at the end of a lease, or when a dealer wants everything standard before investigating something under warranty.
