ECU Remapping in Ashley
Will anybody actually come out to a village this size? That tends to be the first question when somebody rings us from Ashley. The answer is yes, with one honest caveat: at sixteen miles east of the workshop, a visit here gets planned into a day rather than squeezed into a gap between two other jobs.
Getting a mapper out this far east
Ashley sits roughly sixteen miles east of our workshop in Lutterworth, which puts it towards the outer edge of what we cover. That is not a refusal, it is just a scheduling fact worth saying out loud. Corby is the nearest town of any size at under six miles, Kettering is about nine, and a run out in that direction is something we build a day around rather than slot in at short notice. Give us a bit of warning and it is perfectly straightforward.
It helps that this page now covers a whole cluster of villages rather than Ashley by itself. Hallaton, Medbourne, Slawston, Stoke Albany, Wilbarston, Weston by Welland, Brampton Ash, Welham, Cranoe, Glooston and Sutton Bassett are all within a few minutes of each other. If two people in that cluster want something doing in the same week, the trip makes a good deal more sense for everybody. There is a full list of where we get to on the locations page.
You are also welcome to bring the vehicle to us instead. The workshop is on Rugby Road in Lutterworth and some people out this way would rather do that, particularly if they are passing anyway. Nothing about the job itself changes. The only real difference is whose driveway the car is parked on while the work happens.
What the roads round here do to an engine
Driving out of Ashley almost always means a proper run. Nothing much is close by, so even a small errand turns into several miles of open road, and anything resembling a commute means Corby, Market Harborough, Kettering or further still. That is a far kinder diet for a modern turbo diesel than town work, because the engine reaches temperature and stays there, and the exhaust runs hot for long enough to do what it needs to.
It also changes what a map is for out here. What people notice on these roads is not a headline figure at the top of the rev range, it is the middle: pulling out of a junction onto something fast, holding a gear up a rise instead of dropping one, getting past a slow moving vehicle without needing two downshifts and a long straight. That is where we aim a map for a car that lives on roads like these.
If your diesel is still loading its particulate filter despite that sort of mileage, treat it as a clue rather than bad luck. Driving that ought to be clearing a filter and does not usually means something upstream is making more soot than it should, and the answer to that is diagnostics rather than software. There is more about how we go at it on our DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Corby page.

Call 07773 694570How the map gets written, and what we will not touch
Every map starts with reading the original calibration off the ECU and saving it, so the vehicle can go back to exactly how it arrived whenever you want. Then the engine is logged on the road, fuelling, boost and timing are adjusted for the vehicle in front of us and the way you actually use it, and it is logged again afterwards to confirm the change did what it was meant to and that nothing is running outside sensible limits.
We do not remove, blank or emulate diesel particulate filters, EGR valves or AdBlue systems. Removal is an MOT failure and it makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road. What we do instead is diagnose the fault, clean and force regenerate where that is what is called for, and repair whatever is genuinely broken. If the other thing is what you were after, we would rather say no on the phone than make the trip and say it on your drive.
The same applies to whether a map is worth doing at all. It is not a repair. If a turbo is tired, an injector is leaking or a service is long overdue, adding torque will find that weakness sooner rather than fix it. We ask about history and warning lights before agreeing to anything, and now and again the honest answer is that your money is better spent elsewhere first.
Worth a phone call before anything is booked
The useful conversation happens before a date goes in the diary. Tell us the make, model, year and engine, roughly where in the village the vehicle sits, what you want out of it, and whether there are any warning lights or recent work we should know about. That usually settles whether a map suits you inside a couple of minutes, and it costs you nothing. You can send the details over instead if that is easier than talking.
Two practical things for the day itself. The vehicle needs somewhere it can sit with the engine able to run and a door able to open, which out here is rarely a problem. And the battery wants to be in decent health, because writing to an ECU needs steady voltage all the way through. A battery that starts the car perfectly well can still give up part way through a write, so mention it if you already suspect yours.
Remapping in Ashley: your questions answered
Do you genuinely cover somewhere as small as Ashley?
Yes. Ashley is about sixteen miles east of the workshop in Lutterworth, so it is one of the further places on our list, but it is well inside what we cover. Corby is under six miles away and Market Harborough about four and a half, so we are usually out in that direction for something anyway. The only difference from a town near the workshop is that it wants a bit of notice.
How much warning do you need for a village this far out?
More than for somewhere on our doorstep, and less than people expect. Ring, tell us the vehicle and roughly when suits you, and we will find a day. If a neighbour in one of the surrounding villages wants something doing at the same time, say so, because two jobs in one trip out here is easier to arrange than one.
Which villages does this page actually cover?
Ashley itself plus the villages around it: Hallaton, Medbourne, Slawston, Welham, Cranoe, Glooston, Stoke Albany, Wilbarston, Weston by Welland, Brampton Ash and Sutton Bassett. Cottingham, Drayton, Desborough and Market Harborough are all nearby and covered separately. If you are somewhere in that spread and not sure which page applies to you, it makes no difference, ring and ask.
What would I actually feel on roads like these?
Mid range response, mostly. The useful change sits between roughly two and three thousand revs, which is exactly where you are when you pull out of a village junction onto a fast road or need to get past something slow. Peak power at the top of the rev band is the part you almost never use out here, so it is not what we build the map around.
Can the vehicle be put back to how it was?
Yes, at any point. The original calibration is read off the ECU and saved before a single thing is written to it, so the vehicle can be returned to the exact state it was in when we arrived. People usually ask for that when they are selling, handing a lease back, or when a dealer wants it standard for a warranty conversation. Putting it back takes minutes.
Do I have to tell my insurer?
Yes. A remap counts as a modification and should be declared in the same way as a wheel or suspension change. Most insurers take it entirely in their stride once they are told. The only time it becomes a real problem is when it was never declared and then surfaces during a claim, which is the worst possible moment to be having that discussion.
Will you take my DPF off while you are out here?
No, and no amount of distance travelled changes that. Removing a diesel particulate filter is an MOT failure and makes the vehicle unlawful on the road, and we will not write software that pretends a missing filter is still fitted. We diagnose, clean and force regenerate, and we repair what is actually wrong. If that is not what you want, we are the wrong people.
My car is petrol. Is there anything in it for me?
It depends which sort. A turbocharged petrol usually has real margin in the software and responds much like a diesel does. A naturally aspirated one has far less to work with, and on some of those the honest answer is that the gain would not justify what it costs you. Tell us the exact engine when you ring and we will put yours in one category or the other.
How long are you at the vehicle?
Normally about an hour to ninety minutes. That covers reading and saving the original file, logging the engine on the road, writing and loading the map, and logging again afterwards to check it did what it was supposed to. Some vehicles are slower to read and write than others, and if yours is one of them we will tell you that when you book rather than on the day.
Do you do vans and pickups as well as cars?
Yes, and plenty of what gets driven around these villages falls into that category. A working vehicle wants a different emphasis from a car, because it spends its life under load in a narrow part of the rev range. Vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle rather than at the car rate, because the work involved genuinely differs between them. Tell us what you run and we will give you the figure.
