ECU Remapping in Mountsorrel

Almost everything is close to Mountsorrel. Rothley is barely over a mile, Sileby and Quorn not much further, Loughborough four miles and Leicester a little over six. That shapes the driving here more than most people realise, and it changes what is worth asking a map to do.

Short journeys, and the part of the rev range they use

When Loughborough is four miles away and Leicester just over six, hardly any of your driving happens at a settled cruise. You are pulling away, holding a moderate speed for a couple of minutes, slowing for something, then doing it again. The engine spends its working life in the low and middle of the rev range and very little of it anywhere near the top.

That is worth knowing before anybody talks to you about power. The figure at the top of the rev band is the part of the engine you will use least on a journey this length. What you will use, every single time you pull out of a junction, is the response between about fifteen hundred and twenty five hundred revs, and that is where a map written for your car should be concentrating its effort.

It is also why the change people notice most is not that the car is fast. It is that it stops needing a handful of revs and a downshift to do something ordinary. Less effort for the same progress is the honest description of what most drivers here get, and there is fuller background on performance remapping in Loughborough.

The catch with a diesel used this way

Journeys of four and six miles are not long. A diesel particulate filter empties itself by getting the exhaust hot and keeping it there for a sustained stretch, which is something a short run may never quite manage, particularly in cold weather with the engine still warming through. Soot goes in steadily and the chance to burn it off arrives less often than the filter needs.

The failure that catches people out is the interrupted regeneration. The car decides to clean the filter, begins the process, and then you arrive and switch off partway through. Repeat that often enough and you get a filter that never reads clear, fuel finding its way into the oil, and eventually a car that drops into limp mode at the least convenient moment possible.

None of that means a diesel was a mistake. It means the car wants a longer settled run occasionally, and it means that when the light does appear, the cause is often the pattern of use rather than a failed component. Working out which of those you have is most of the job, and DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Loughborough covers how we go about it.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across Mountsorrel and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

When we tell people not to bother

A map is not a repair and we will not sell it as one. If a car is down on power because a boost hose is splitting, an injector is tired, a turbo is on the way out or the filter is already part blocked, adding torque will not correct any of it. It will cover the symptom for a while and then find the weakness, and it tends to pick its own moment.

So we ask about warning lights, service history and how the car has been behaving before agreeing to anything. Sometimes that conversation ends with us saying no. A stored fault, a clutch that is slipping or a cooling system already working hard puts a car out of the running until the underlying job is done, and saying so costs us a booking and saves you a far larger bill.

The same applies to filters and emissions systems. We diagnose, clean, force regenerate and repair. We do not take filters off and we do not write software that pretends a missing one is still fitted, because it fails an MOT and leaves the vehicle unlawful to use on the road. EGR and AdBlue get exactly the same answer.

Nineteen miles north, and the neighbours on this page

Mountsorrel is a little under nineteen miles north of the workshop in Lutterworth. That is a proper trip rather than a drop in, so we agree a firm time and want the make, model, year and engine beforehand, which lets us arrive with the right equipment instead of finding out on your driveway that we needed something else.

Everything happens at the car. A driveway is ideal and a quiet street is usually workable. The one genuine obstacle is a weak battery, since the ECU needs steady voltage for the whole time it is being written to, and a battery that starts the car perfectly well can still give up halfway through. Say so when you book if you already suspect yours.

If you are nearer Rothley or Quorn than you are to the centre of Mountsorrel, both have pages of their own, and nothing about the job or the price changes either way. Ring, describe the car and what it does in a normal week, and you will get a straight answer about whether it is worth doing before anybody books a date.

Remapping in Mountsorrel: your questions answered

My car feels flat pulling away but fine once it is moving. Is that something a map fixes?

It might be, and it might be a fault. A soft response low down can be the standard calibration being cautious, in which case a written map will sharpen it noticeably. It can equally be a split boost hose, a sticking turbo vane or a sensor reading wrong, none of which software will cure. Describe it on the phone and we will tell you which one is worth checking first.

Four miles to Loughborough and six to Leicester. Is that too short for a diesel?

It is on the hard side for one, yes. A filter needs the exhaust hot for a sustained period to clear itself, and journeys of that length can end before it gets there. It does not mean the car is wrong for you, but it does mean giving it a longer settled run every so often, rather than waiting for the dashboard to insist on one.

Will I actually feel the difference on journeys this short?

That is the part of the rev range the change lands in, so yes. The gain sits low and in the middle, which is exactly where a four or six mile journey lives. What you will not feel is anything at the top of the rev band, because you will have changed gear long before you get there. Anyone quoting you a peak figure is quoting the part you never use.

Do you come out, or is the car dropped off somewhere?

We come to the car. Mountsorrel is a little under nineteen miles north of the workshop in Lutterworth, so the visit is planned into a day and we agree a proper time with you. A driveway, a quiet street or a work car park are all fine. Bringing it down to Lutterworth instead is an option and plenty of people prefer it.

Would you ever turn the job down?

Regularly. A car with a stored fault, a slipping clutch, a cooling system already struggling or a service long overdue is not a candidate until that is dealt with. Adding torque to something already weak only decides when it lets go. We would rather lose the booking than take money for work that leaves you worse off a month later.

Do you remove diesel particulate filters?

No. Removal is an MOT failure and it makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, so it is not something we will put our name to whatever the car is. We will not write software that pretends a missing filter is still fitted either. What we do is diagnose the cause, clean the filter and run a forced regeneration so it works properly again.

What about EGR and AdBlue faults?

Both are diagnosed and repaired rather than switched off. AdBlue problems in particular are often a sensor, a heater or a crystallised injector rather than the whole system, and they are worth investigating properly instead of replacing parts hopefully. We do not blank, delete or emulate either one, and if that is what is wanted we are not the right people for it.

How long does a visit take?

About an hour for most cars, occasionally ninety minutes. That includes reading and saving the original file, logging the engine on the road, writing and loading the map, and logging again afterwards to confirm the change behaved as intended. A handful of vehicles are slower to read and write, and if yours is one you will be told before the day rather than on it.

Can everything be undone if I change my mind?

Yes. The factory calibration is copied off and stored before anything is altered, so the car can go back to exactly how it was. That is what people want when they sell, when a lease is ending, or when a dealer would rather see the vehicle standard during a warranty discussion. Putting it back is quick and there is no awkwardness about asking for it.

Do I have to declare it on my insurance?

Yes, and it is a short call. A remap counts as a modification and should be declared like any other change to the vehicle. Most insurers are entirely relaxed about it once told. The problem only ever appears when it was left unmentioned and then surfaces during a claim, which is a bad time to be having the conversation.

I brought my car in for a remap and DPF clean, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The team was professional, knowledgeable, and explained everything clearly before starting the work.
