ECU Remapping in Quorn and Quorndon

Quorn and Quorndon are two names for the same village, and this page now covers both, along with Woodhouse, Woodhouse Eaves and The Brand. All of it sits a couple of miles from Loughborough and about twenty north of our workshop, which shapes how we reach you and what happens when we arrive.

The half second before an automatic makes its mind up

The complaint we hear most often from people driving automatics is a pause. You come up to a junction, see the gap you want, ask for everything the car has, and the gearbox spends what feels like a long time deciding which ratio it fancies. Nothing is broken and no fault code will be stored. That delay was written into the transmission software by a manufacturer trying to keep every possible owner in every possible market comfortable.

The second complaint is a box that cannot settle on a gentle climb or a long exit, swapping between two gears and then swapping straight back. That is a setting rather than a fault as well, and it is doing the transmission no favours either. Both decisions live in the transmission control unit, which is a separate computer holding its own file, and on plenty of modern cars that file can be rewritten.

What sits inside it is a list of judgements: when a shift happens, how quickly, how firmly it lands, how long a gear is held before it is given up, how willingly two are dropped at once, and how hard the box clamps to hold the torque passing through it. Sharper need not mean harsher, because firmness is one of the numbers being chosen. There is background on gearbox tuning in Loughborough.

Why we raise it before the engine work rather than after

Add torque to an engine and leave the transmission software untouched, and the box carries on making every judgement it makes about an engine that no longer exists. Its shift points were picked around a different torque curve, and its clamping pressures were set for a smaller figure than it is now being asked to hold. Mild cases simply feel unresolved to drive. Less mild ones wear something you would rather were not wearing.

So on an automatic we bring it up at the enquiry stage rather than once the engine file has been written and paid for. Doing both in one visit means the two are built around each other from the beginning, and it saves a second trip out to a village twenty miles from the workshop. If you would rather have only the engine side done, that is fine, and performance remapping in Loughborough covers what that involves.

Not every box is worth touching. Some are wide open to this work and some are effectively sealed, and it varies by manufacturer, by model year and occasionally by the individual unit, so we check your exact vehicle before quoting rather than assuming it behaves like the last one through. If yours cannot be usefully changed, we will tell you. A manual has no transmission control unit, so there is nothing there to write to at all.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across Quorn and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

What the engine side is actually doing here

Loughborough is two and a half miles away and Leicester around seven and a half, so a good deal of driving out of this village is middling distance rather than long haul. The change worth having on that sort of journey sits in the middle of the rev range, which is where you genuinely spend your time, rather than at the very top where you almost never go. In practice that means fewer downshifts and less effort to keep pace.

The method does not vary. Your original calibration is read off the ECU and stored, the engine is logged on the road so we can watch it working under load, fuelling, boost and timing are adjusted around the way the car is really used, and it is logged again to prove the change did what it was supposed to. If you ever want the factory file back on it, it goes back on.

What we will not do is dress a map up as a repair. If a filter is loading, a turbo is getting tired or a sensor is lying to the ECU, software hides the symptom for a while and then hands you something larger. We diagnose diesel particulate filters, clean them and force a regeneration, and we repair EGR and AdBlue faults so they work as designed. That answer stays the same whoever is asking.

Twenty miles north, and the villages this page now takes in

Quorn is about twenty miles north of the workshop in Lutterworth, which makes it a planned visit rather than a drop in. We agree a time and ask for the make, model, year and engine beforehand so the right equipment travels with us. Most jobs take an hour to ninety minutes at the vehicle, and we can work on a driveway, on a quiet street, or in a car park if whoever runs it has no objection.

This village used to have three separate pages under its two names, which helped nobody looking for a straight answer. This one covers Quorn and Quorndon together, and takes in Woodhouse, Woodhouse Eaves and The Brand. Barrow upon Soar is under a mile away and Rothley a similar distance the other way, so use those pages if you are nearer to either.

Before booking anything, ring and describe the car. What it is, what it does in a normal week, whether it is an automatic, whether anybody has worked on it lately and whether the dashboard has been trying to tell you something. That conversation usually settles whether the job is worth doing, and it costs you nothing to have it.

Remapping in Quorn: your questions answered

I live in Quorndon rather than Quorn. Is that the same thing?

It is the same village under two names, and this page covers both. It also covers Woodhouse, Woodhouse Eaves and The Brand. There used to be several near identical pages here saying much the same thing, which was no use to anybody trying to work out whether we come out that far. We do, and this is the page that says so.

My automatic hesitates when I try to pull out. Can that be improved?

Usually, if the delay is a decision rather than a mechanical problem. The pause before a kickdown is a deliberate setting chosen for smoothness and for protecting the box from every kind of driver, and reducing it is one of the main things transmission work does. If the hesitation arrives with slipping, shuddering or odd noises, that is a different conversation and we would want to look at it first.

Will sharper shifts make the car unpleasant to live with?

Only if that is what you ask for. How firmly a shift lands is one of the parameters being set, so quicker does not have to mean rougher. A lot of people want better timed changes with no more thump than standard, which is entirely achievable. Tell us how you want the car to feel and that is what the file gets written towards.

The engine has already been mapped by somebody else. Have I missed the boat?

Not at all. The gearbox can be done afterwards, and on a car that has already had torque added there is usually something worth correcting, because the transmission is still working to the torque curve the engine used to have. Say who did the engine work and what was done when you ring, so we know what we are building on top of.

Can you do the engine and the gearbox in the same visit?

Yes, and on an automatic that is normally the sensible order. Written together, the two are designed around each other instead of one being retrofitted to the other. It also means a single trip. Quorn is roughly twenty miles from the workshop, so combining them saves your time as well as ours, and it is worth mentioning when you first ring.

What if I drive a manual?

Then there is no transmission control unit to work on, and the engine map is the whole job. If somebody has offered to tune the gearbox on your manual car, ask them precisely what they intend to write to and what they expect it to change, because the answer should be interesting. On a manual the honest scope is the engine file and nothing else.

Can the transmission file be put back to standard?

Yes, on the same principle as the engine. The original is read and saved before anything is written, so the box can be returned to its factory calibration whenever you want it. That matters for a dealer visit, a sale or a lease return. Putting either file back is quick, and asking for it is not a difficult conversation to have with us.

What do I need to check about insurance, warranty or finance?

Declare it to your insurer, because it is a modification whether it is the engine file or the gearbox file. If the car is under manufacturer warranty, on a lease or on finance, tell us at the enquiry stage and we will give you a straight answer about whether proceeding is sensible. Better to know where you stand before the work than to find out afterwards.

Which gearboxes can you actually work on?

A good number of modern dual clutch and torque converter automatics, but it varies enormously and there is no useful blanket answer. Two cars from the same manufacturer a couple of years apart can be completely different propositions. That is why we ask for the exact make, model, year and engine and check yours specifically before quoting rather than promising something we may not be able to deliver.

Can you sort a DPF while you are out here?

We can diagnose it, clean it and run a forced regeneration, and we will tell you what caused the loading rather than just resetting the clock. What we do not do, on any vehicle, is remove a filter or write software that pretends a missing one is still fitted. It is an MOT failure and it makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road.
