DPF Cleaning, Diagnostics and Forced Regeneration in Loughborough
Loughborough runs on an older vehicle parc than the commuter towns south of us, and older diesels come with older filters. A particulate filter that has covered a hundred and forty thousand miles is a different proposition from one that has covered forty, so we work out which yours is before anybody promises you a clean.
Why the age of the car matters more here than the warning light
Loughborough sits on the A6 with M1 junction 23 a few minutes west, and it is a university town, which shapes what is parked on its streets. Alongside the ordinary commuter traffic there is a much larger share of older, smaller, cheaper cars than you find in Leamington or Warwick. Plenty of them are second or third hand diesels bought on a budget, doing short trips between accommodation, campus and the town centre, then an occasional long run home at the end of term.
That combination is about the hardest life you can give a particulate filter. Short cold journeys never let the exhaust reach or hold the temperature a regeneration needs, so soot goes in faster than it is burned off. Then a long motorway leg arrives and asks a heavily loaded filter to clear itself all at once, which sometimes works and sometimes turns a cleanable filter into a replacement one.
So the first questions we ask a Loughborough caller are how old the car is, what the recorded mileage is, and what it actually does in a normal week. Two vehicles can show identical dashboard warnings and have completely different prognoses, and the difference is usually age and history rather than anything the light is telling you.
Soot can be burned off. Ash cannot.
This is the distinction that decides whether a clean is worth paying for. Soot is unburned carbon and it is what a regeneration deals with. Ash is the incombustible residue left behind by engine oil and fuel additives, it accumulates steadily with mileage, and no regeneration will shift it. A filter with a high calculated ash load is simply used up, and that is far more common on a car with a long service history and a fair few oil changes behind it than on a recent one.
The ECU keeps its own estimate of both, which is why we read live data rather than just pull fault codes. We look at the differential pressure across the filter, the calculated soot load against the calculated ash load, the exhaust temperatures the sensors are actually reporting, and the counters for how many regenerations have been attempted against how many completed. A car attempting regenerations and failing them is telling you a different story from one that never attempts them at all.
On an older engine we also look upstream before we touch the filter. Injector correction values drifting apart, a turbo that has started passing oil past a tired seal, an EGR valve coked almost solid, or a pressure or temperature sensor that has aged out of tolerance will all keep refilling a filter you have just cleaned.

Sometimes the data says the filter is beyond cleaning. High calculated ash, or a pressure differential that stays stubbornly high after a regeneration that otherwise completed normally, means you are looking at a replacement rather than a service. We will say that rather than take money for a clean that will hold for a month and then hand you the same problem back.

Neither of those is something we can sell you, which is rather the point.
What we will not do, whatever the car is worth
We do not remove diesel particulate filters, and we do not write software that pretends a missing one is still in place. That applies to a twelve year old hatchback exactly as it applies to a new van. Removing or defeating emissions equipment on a road going vehicle is an MOT failure and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road afterwards, and it can create problems with insurance that dwarf the cost of doing the job properly.
EGR and AdBlue are the same. We diagnose them, clean them, repair them and get them working the way they were designed to. We do not blank them, delete them or emulate them. If that is what you came looking for then we are not the right people, and we would rather tell you on the phone than after you have booked a visit.

Is my car too old for DPF cleaning to be worth it?
Age on its own is not the deciding factor, but recorded mileage often is. Soot can be burned off at any age. Ash cannot, and it accumulates steadily over the life of the filter, so a very high mileage car is more likely to have a filter that is genuinely used up rather than just loaded. Live data tells us which one you have, and we would rather find that out before you pay for anything.
What is the difference between soot and ash in a DPF?

The ECU estimates both separately, which is why we read the calculated values rather than guessing from how the car feels.
My car does short trips round Loughborough. Is that why the filter blocks?
Very often, yes. A regeneration needs the exhaust hot and held hot for a sustained period, and a short cold run between accommodation, campus and the town centre never gets there. Worse, a regeneration that starts and then gets cut short when you switch off can leave the filter in a worse state than before. It does not make a diesel the wrong car, but it does mean it needs a proper run regularly.
Will a run up the M1 to junction 23 and back clear the light?
It is worth trying if the light has only just appeared and the car is otherwise driving normally. Sustained speed in a slightly lower gear than you would usually choose gives the exhaust the best chance of getting hot. If the light is still there afterwards, or it was flashing to begin with, the filter is too loaded to clear itself and forcing the issue by driving it harder tends to make things worse.
Do you remove DPFs?
No, and not on any vehicle at any age. Removal is an MOT failure and makes the car unlawful to use on the road, and we will not write software that pretends a missing filter is still fitted. We diagnose, clean and force regenerate instead. If removal is what you are after, we are not the right people for the job.
The car has no service history. Does that change what you can do?
It changes what we can assume rather than what we can do. Without a record we cannot tell how many oil changes the filter has lived through, which is the main thing that drives ash loading, so we rely entirely on live data and the ECU calculated values. It usually means a slightly longer diagnostic session and a more cautious answer at the end of it.
Can you do the work at my house in Loughborough?
Usually yes. Diagnostics, live data and a forced regeneration are all done at the vehicle, so a driveway or a space where the car can sit safely is enough. If the filter needs removing for a deep clean, or the fault turns out to be something that wants a workshop, we will tell you that before we begin rather than partway through.
Is it an EGR problem or a DPF problem?
They are frequently the same story seen from two ends. An EGR valve that is stuck or heavily coked changes what is going into the cylinders and can produce far more soot than the filter is meant to handle, so the DPF is where you notice it. Diagnostics separate the two, and repairing the EGR is often the job that actually stops the filter refilling.
What about AdBlue faults on an older diesel?
Older AdBlue systems tend to fail in predictable ways: crystallisation in the injector or the lines, a heater that has given up over a few winters, a pump nearing the end of its life, or a quality or level sensor reading wrong. Those are diagnosed and repaired individually rather than replaced hopefully as a set. What we will not do is delete or emulate the system.
How long does a forced regeneration take?
Once it actually begins it is usually somewhere around thirty to forty five minutes, and the diagnostics beforehand are typically well under an hour. The variable is what the diagnostics find. A straightforward soot loaded filter is a short job, an injector or sensor fault that has to be sorted first is a different visit entirely.
Should I just remap it instead to stop the DPF blocking?
No. A map cannot unblock a filter and will not fix whatever caused it to load. Once the underlying problem has been dealt with, a properly written map can stop an engine producing more soot than it needs to, which is a useful second step. It is never the first one, and anyone selling it as the fix is selling you something.
Can you give me any idea over the phone before I book?
Usually quite a lot. Whether the light is steady or flashing, whether the car has gone into limp mode, the age, the recorded mileage and what it does in a normal week will narrow the likely causes considerably. It costs nothing to ring and describe it, and on an older car that conversation sometimes ends with us telling you not to bother.
