ECU Remapping in Oadby

Most Oadby driving is the same shape twice a day. Queue, move, queue again over the three and a half miles into Leicester, then something longer and more open at the weekend. A factory calibration has to cope with both and is optimised for neither, and an automatic gearbox finds the first half of that genuinely awkward.

Why the commute is hard on the software

Manufacturers write one calibration and ship it everywhere. It has to survive fuel quality we never see here, climates we never get, owners who skip services and drivers who do nothing but crawl. The margin left behind to make that safe is real, and on a modern turbocharged engine a map written for your specific car on the fuel you actually buy can use a good part of it without touching a single component.

The Oadby pattern sharpens that up. Short stretches of stop start work into Leicester ask for response low down, immediately, without waiting for a turbo to catch up. The longer runs out towards the villages ask for something settled and efficient. Those two are not in conflict, but a generic file aimed at neither will feel vague in both.

So the question we ask people here is not what power figure you are after. It is which half of that week annoys you more, the crawling or the open running, because that answer shapes the map far more than the badge on the front of the car does. Two identical models belonging to two neighbours can want quite different things, and the only way to know which is which is to ask the person who drives it every day.

Where you would notice it and where you would not

The change most drivers report sits between roughly two thousand revs and the middle of the band, which is almost the entire range you use on a commute like this. Pulling out of a junction into moving traffic without the pause, holding one gear where you used to need two, getting past something on a single carriageway without planning it several seconds in advance.

Where you would not notice it is at the top of the rev range, because you almost never go there. That is the part of the graph that sells maps and the part of the driving you never do. We would rather talk about the bit you use than the bit that looks impressive written down. There is more on performance remapping in Leicester.

This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across oadby and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

If it is an automatic, the gearbox is half the job

The complaints we hear most often from automatic drivers around here are hesitation and hunting. Hesitation is the delay between asking for a kickdown at a junction and actually getting one. Hunting is a box that cannot settle between two ratios on a gentle rise or a long approach and keeps swapping between them. Neither is mechanically broken. Both are decisions the transmission control unit has been told to make.

Those decisions can be reweighted. When a shift happens, how quickly, how firmly it lands, how long a ratio is held before it is given up, how willing the box is to drop two at once. Firmness is one of the things being chosen, so sharper does not have to mean harsher, and plenty of people ask for quicker changes with no more thump than standard.

It matters more once an engine has been mapped. Add torque and leave the transmission software alone and the box is making every decision based on an engine that no longer exists. Doing both in one visit is normally the sensible order and it saves a second trip out to you. Gearbox tuning in Leicester has the detail.

Coming out to Oadby and the villages beyond it

Oadby is eleven miles north east of the workshop in Lutterworth. We bring everything to the car and work where it is parked, which for most people here means a driveway. Plan for ninety minutes and it is often less. The untouched file comes off first and is filed away, so the car can be returned to factory software whenever you ask.

The same page covers the villages out past the town: Great Glen, Houghton on the Hill, Thurnby, Stoughton, Newton Harcourt, Little and Great Stretton, Tilton on the Hill and several more. If you are closer to Wigston, a mile and a half away, or to Blaby or Whetstone, those have pages of their own.

Remapping in oadby: your questions answered

Will I feel a difference on the run into Leicester?

That is where most people do feel it. The useful change sits from about two thousand revs through the middle of the range, and on a few miles of stop start work that is essentially all of your driving. Less waiting after you ask for acceleration, fewer downshifts, and overtaking that does not need planning. The top of the rev band, which you almost never reach, is the part nobody actually uses.

My automatic hesitates before it kicks down. Can that be improved?

Usually, provided the delay is a software decision rather than something mechanical. That pause is deliberate, chosen for smoothness and to protect the box from every possible owner in every possible market, and it can be reweighted towards how you actually drive. If the hesitation comes with slipping, odd noises or a burning smell, that is a different problem and we would want it looked at first.

Should the engine and gearbox be done together?

On an automatic, normally yes. If torque goes up and the transmission software stays as it was, the box is choosing shift points and clamping pressures for an engine that no longer exists. Doing both in one visit means they are designed around each other from the start, and it saves you paying for a second trip out. On a manual there is no transmission unit to change.

Will sharper shifts make the car unpleasant?

Only if that is what you ask for. How firmly a shift lands is one of the settings being chosen, so quicker and better timed does not have to mean harsher. A lot of people want the response improved and the comfort left alone, which is a perfectly sensible request. Tell us how you want the car to feel and that is what it gets written towards.

Do you come out to Oadby or is it workshop only?

We come to you. Oadby is eleven miles north east of the workshop in Lutterworth, so it is a straightforward run for us and we work wherever the car is parked. A driveway is ideal. The workshop on Rugby Road is there if you would rather bring it in, and nothing about the job changes either way.

Which villages does this page cover?

Great Glen, Houghton on the Hill, Thurnby and Thurnby Lodge, Stoughton, Bushby, Newton Harcourt, Little Stretton, Great Stretton, Gaulby, Kings Norton, Old Ingarsby and Tilton on the Hill, along with Oadby itself. Wigston is a mile and a half away and Blaby and Whetstone are both within five, and each of those has its own page.

How long will you need the car for?

Plan for ninety minutes and it is frequently less. That covers reading and storing the original calibration, logging the engine on a road drive, writing and loading the map, and logging a second time to confirm the result. Some control units are slower to read and write than others, and if yours is one we will mention it when you book.

Does it hurt fuel economy?

Driven the way you drive now, many cars use the same or slightly less, because the engine does the same work with less effort. Driven the way the extra response invites, it will use more. That is a decision made with your right foot rather than something done to the car, and in practice most people settle somewhere in the middle of the two.

What about the DPF on a car doing mostly short trips?

Short trips are the hardest use a filter gets, because the exhaust rarely reaches the temperature it needs to clear itself. A map does not unblock anything. If the filter is already loaded, that is a diagnostic job with live data, a proper clean and a forced regeneration. We do not remove, blank or emulate DPF, EGR or AdBlue systems on any vehicle.

Can everything be undone?

Yes, engine and gearbox both. The original files are read off and stored before anything is written to either unit, so the car can be put back to exactly the calibrations it arrived with. That is the usual request before a sale, at the end of a lease or before a dealer investigates something, and putting it back takes very little time.

Mark at Mercia Remaps was an absolute pleasure to deal with!! Had a Stage 1 tune/remap done to my Ford Ranger V6 Diesel 2025 and it's bloody fantastic.

I recently had a Stage 1 remap done by Mark and couldn’t be happier. He’s passionate about what he does and took the time to explain the process, what to expect, and gave me some recommendations for after the remap.

Alex Wojas · Google review

Thank you to mark remapping my car. Such a noticeable difference and better miles per gallon now too.
