ECU Remapping in Wigston

A remap is a change to a few tables of numbers inside the engine control unit: how much fuel goes in, how much boost the turbo makes, when the injection and the ignition happen. Nothing else about the vehicle is touched. Wigston is under ten miles from us, so that work happens on your drive.

What is actually being changed

The ECU holds maps, which are grids of numbers the engine looks up thousands of times a second. Given this throttle position and this engine speed and this air temperature, inject this much fuel, run this much boost, fire at this point. A remap alters those grids. It does not add parts, it does not remove anything, and it cannot make an engine do something the hardware was never able to do.

The reason there is room to change them at all is that the factory numbers have to be safe everywhere. Fuel quality we never see here, climates we never get, servicing that may or may not have happened. The margin left in the software to survive all of that is real, and on a modern turbocharged engine a fair part of it is available without touching a single component.

What we do is find where that margin actually sits on your specific vehicle and then use a sensible amount of it. Not all of it, not a figure somebody pulled off a forum, and not whatever makes the biggest impression when repeated back to a friend. The point of leaving some of that margin alone is that the engine still has to survive a cold morning in three winters' time. There is more general background on ECU remapping if you want to read up before you ring.

Why it is written for your vehicle rather than downloaded

Two cars of the same model and year can be in very different condition. One has a full history and a healthy turbo. The other has a slightly lazy injector, a boost leak nobody has noticed and an air filter that should have been changed last year. A file selected because the engine code matched treats both as identical, which is fine for one of them.

So the stock file is read out and archived first, then the engine gets logged on the road so we can see what yours is genuinely doing under load. The changes are made against that picture, and then the vehicle is driven and logged a second time to confirm the result. That second log is the part that separates a map from a hopeful guess, and it is the step most often left out.

It is also how problems get spotted. A car pulling nicely but running hotter than we want in one part of the rev range is something you find by measuring, not by assuming. If we find that, we tell you, and the map gets adjusted rather than left as it is.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across wigston and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

Want to know exactly what we would change?Ask. We will tell you which parameters we would touch on your engine and why, before you decide anything.

Insurance, warranty and putting it back

You need to declare it. A remap is a modification in exactly the way a suspension change or a set of wheels is, and it belongs on the policy. Most insurers deal with it in a couple of minutes without any fuss at all. The only situation where it becomes expensive is when nobody was told and it comes to light while a claim is being assessed.

Warranty, lease and finance agreements all deserve a mention at the enquiry stage. A manufacturer warranty can be affected if a fault is later traced back to the software, and lease agreements often carry their own conditions about modifications. Tell us where you stand when you ring and you will get a straight answer rather than a shrug.

The original calibration is kept in every case, so the vehicle can be returned to factory software at any point. That is a short job. People ask for it before selling, at the end of a lease, and before a dealer looks at anything, and there is no awkwardness about requesting it.

Getting to Wigston, and who else this page covers

Wigston is a shade under ten miles north east of the workshop in Lutterworth, with Leicester three and a half miles beyond it. That makes it one of the more straightforward places for us to reach and it means timing is usually easy to arrange. You are looking at somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half at the vehicle.

The same page covers South Wigston along with Kilby, Kilby Bridge, Arnesby, Foston and Wistow. Oadby is a mile and a half away and has its own page, as do Blaby and Whetstone within three miles. If you run a van rather than a car, what it wants from a map is different, and van and commercial remapping in Leicester explains why.

Remapping in wigston: your questions answered

What is actually altered inside the ECU?

Tables of numbers that the engine looks up constantly: fuelling, boost and the timing of injection and ignition. Nothing is added to the vehicle and nothing is taken off it. A remap cannot make hardware do something it was never capable of, and anybody suggesting otherwise is overselling. It changes how the existing components are instructed to behave, within limits we set deliberately.

Why not just buy a file for my engine code?

Because two vehicles with the same engine code can be in very different health. A lazy injector, an unnoticed boost leak or a neglected service makes one of them a different proposition from the other, and a downloaded file treats them as identical. Reading your original calibration and logging your engine on the road is how you find out which one you have before anything gets written.

Do you come out to Wigston?

Yes, and it is an easy run. You are a shade under ten miles north east of the workshop in Lutterworth, so timing is usually simple to arrange. We work where the vehicle is parked, which for most people means a driveway. The workshop on Rugby Road is available instead if you would rather bring it to us.

How long does it take?

Somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half at the vehicle. That covers reading and saving the factory file, logging the engine on a road drive, writing and loading the map and then logging again to check the change did what it was meant to. A few control units are slower than others and we will flag that at booking if it applies.

Do I have to tell my insurer?

Yes. It is a modification and it belongs on the policy exactly as a suspension change or a set of wheels would. Most insurers handle it in a short phone call and think nothing of it. The only time it becomes a genuine problem is when it was never declared and then emerges while a claim is being assessed, which is the worst possible timing.

What about my manufacturer warranty?

It can be affected if a fault is later traced back to the software, so raise it when you ring. Lease and finance agreements often carry their own conditions about modifications too. We keep the original calibration so the vehicle can be returned to standard, but it is far better to understand the position before the work rather than after.

Which villages does this page cover?

South Wigston, Kilby, Kilby Bridge, Arnesby, Foston and Wistow, alongside Wigston itself. Oadby is a mile and a half away, Blaby two and a half and Whetstone a little over three, and all three have pages of their own. If you are unsure which one you belong on, it makes no practical difference. Ring and tell us where you are.

Is my van treated the same as a car?

The process is the same but the map is not. A van spends its life under load in a narrow band of revs, so what matters is mid range pulling power rather than anything at the top end. Tell us what you carry, how far and on what roads, because a vehicle doing short local drops and one doing long steady runs want opposite things.

Can you map it if the DPF light is on?

We would want to understand that first. Software does not unblock a filter, and mapping over a problem adds load to something already struggling. A loaded filter needs live data, a diagnosis of what filled it, a proper clean and a forced regeneration. We never remove, blank or emulate DPF, EGR or AdBlue systems, so if that is what you are after we are not the right people.

If I hate it, can I have the old one back?

Yes, and people do occasionally ask. The factory file is stored before anything is written, so putting it back is quick and there is no fuss about it. The same applies when you sell the vehicle, hand back a lease or want everything standard before a dealer looks at something under warranty.

Just had a remap done by Mark and I couldn't be more happy. he's very informative on what he's doing and he's a really nice chap to speak to while he's working on the car. Couldn't recommend his services more.
