ECU Remapping in Weston, Northamptonshire
There are a great many Westons in England. This one is the Northamptonshire village about twenty three miles south of our Lutterworth workshop, out among Eydon, Culworth and Blakesley. If that is the Weston you live in, we come to you. The visit just goes in the diary for a set day instead of being fitted in at short notice.
Which Weston this page is actually for
Search the name on its own and you get Westons from half the counties in England, most of them nowhere near here. So let us be plain about it. The Weston this page covers is the Northamptonshire village roughly thirteen miles from Northampton and under ten from Daventry, sitting in the cluster that takes in Eydon, Culworth, Blakesley, Chipping Warden and Canons Ashby. If those are the names on the signposts near you, you have landed in the right place.
That is worth saying because people in small villages tend to assume nobody covers them, then open a page that turns out to be about a Weston two hundred miles away and give up on the idea. Twenty one villages sit under this one, including Adstone, Appletree, Aston le Walls, Bradden, Edgcote, Hinton, Little Preston, Maidford and Milthorpe, so it is worth being specific about which twenty one.
If you are a bit further out, Eastcote, Flore and Staverton each have their own page, and Daventry is handled separately too. None of that changes the work or what it costs you. All it changes is which day we are likely to be heading in your direction, which is a conversation rather than a rule.
Twenty three miles south, so the visit gets planned
Our workshop sits on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, and Weston is about twenty three and a half miles south of it. That is a real distance and pretending otherwise would only irritate you later. A run down to this corner of Northamptonshire goes in the diary on purpose, on a day we are already working that end of the patch, instead of being dropped into whatever hour happens to be spare.
The practical side of that is straightforward. Ring, give us the vehicle and the rough week you have in mind, and you get a date back rather than a maybe. If somebody else in one of the surrounding villages wants work doing around the same time, mention it, because a pair of jobs in the same handful of lanes makes the journey far easier to arrange.
You are also free to bring the vehicle up to Lutterworth yourself, which suits some people out this way, particularly anyone heading north anyway. The job itself is identical. The whole mobile side of what we do exists because most owners would rather not lose half a day to driving, but nobody is obliged to use it.

Call 07773 694570Long runs, quiet lanes, and where a map earns its keep
Very little is close to Weston, so nearly every journey turns into a proper run. An errand is miles. Work, for most people round here, means Northampton, Daventry or somewhere further still, and a good deal of that is done at a steady cruise rather than in crawling traffic. A modern turbo diesel gets on far better with that kind of use than with a life of short cold trips that never warm anything through.
What owners notice after a map on roads like these is rarely anything near the red line. It is the part of the rev range you actually live in, low to middle, where an overtake begins and where a loaded vehicle settles into a long climb. That is what we aim at for a car that spends its life out here, and it is why we ask how you drive before we touch anything.
If your diesel keeps flagging its particulate filter in spite of all that mileage, do not simply put up with it. Journeys of this length ought to be keeping a filter clear, so when they are not, something is usually making more soot than it should. That is a diagnostic job well before it is a software one, and the DPF cleaning and diagnostics page sets out how we go at it.
The original file comes off first, and we keep it
Before a single thing is written, the original calibration is read out of the ECU and stored. That is the entire reason a vehicle can go back to standard later, whether you are selling it, reaching the end of an agreement, or a dealer wants it exactly as it left the factory for a warranty conversation. Restoring it is a short job, and it is not a favour we are doing you. It is part of the work.
The map itself is written for your vehicle rather than lifted off a shelf. The engine is logged on the road first, then fuelling, boost and timing are adjusted around how the thing is genuinely used, then it is logged again afterwards so we can see the change is real and nothing is sitting outside sensible limits. Plan on us being with you for an hour to ninety minutes.
Two things we will not do. We do not remove, blank or emulate particulate filters, EGR valves or AdBlue systems, because that is an MOT failure and unlawful to use on the road. And we will not map a vehicle that needs repairing first. A tired turbo or a long overdue service is not cured by extra torque. Better you hear that on the phone, so send the details over if that is easier than talking.
Remapping in Weston: your questions answered
Which Weston does this page cover?
The Northamptonshire one, roughly thirteen miles from Northampton and under ten from Daventry, surrounded by Eydon, Culworth, Blakesley, Chipping Warden and Canons Ashby. The name is common enough that searching it on its own throws up villages and suburbs from all over the country, which is no use at all when what you want to know is whether somebody will come out to you. If those neighbouring names look familiar, you are on the right page.
Is a village this small really on your list?
Yes. Weston is a village rather than a town and we cover it regardless, along with twenty others in the same spread. The only honest difference is timing. At around twenty three and a half miles south of Lutterworth it sits in one of the further corners we serve, so the visit is arranged for a particular day instead of being offered at a few hours notice.
Which villages come under this page?
Weston itself, plus Adstone, Appletree, Aston le Walls, Blakesley, Bradden, Canons Ashby, Chipping Warden, Culworth, Edgcote, Eydon, Hinton, Little Preston, Maidford and Milthorpe, among others in the same pocket. Eastcote, Flore, Staverton and Daventry have pages of their own. If you sit somewhere in between and cannot work out which one applies to you, it makes no practical difference. Ring and read us the postcode.
How much notice do you need?
Enough to build a day around it, which in practice usually means about a week rather than a morning. There is no hard rule and a lot depends on what else is already booked at that end of the patch. Give us the vehicle details and the window you are hoping for and you will get a firm date back instead of a vague promise to fit you in somewhere.
Can I bring the vehicle to you instead?
Yes. The workshop is at 3 Rugby Road in Lutterworth and you are welcome to drive up, which a fair few people from this direction do when they are already going north for something else. Nothing about the job changes: the original file is saved, the engine is logged on the road, the map is written and loaded, and it is logged again afterwards. Ring first so we know to expect you.
What will I actually feel afterwards?
On roads like these, mostly a difference in how readily the engine answers in the low and middle part of the rev range. Overtakes need less working out in advance and a loaded car copes better with a long climb. We will not quote you a figure before seeing the vehicle, because the honest answer moves with engine, mileage and condition, and an invented number helps nobody.
Can it be put back to standard?
Yes, at any point you like. The original calibration is lifted from the ECU and kept before anything else is done, so returning the vehicle to precisely how it was is a short job rather than an undertaking. People usually ask when they are selling, finishing a finance agreement, or going into a dealer about something covered under warranty. There is no penalty for asking and nothing clever about it.
Does my insurer need to know?
Yes, and the sooner the better. A remap counts as a modification in the same way a suspension or wheel change does, and most insurers take the declaration without much fuss. The difficulty only appears when it was never mentioned and then surfaces in the middle of a claim, which is about the worst moment anybody could pick for that particular discussion.
Can you delete the DPF while you are here?
No, and that is not about distance or discretion. A missing particulate filter fails an MOT and leaves the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, so it is not something we will write software around. The useful version of that job is diagnosis: work out why the filter is loading up, clean it, force a regeneration if that is what it needs, and repair whatever has actually failed. Better you hear that now than on your driveway.
Do you do vans as well as cars?
Yes. Plenty of people out this way run a van or a pickup for work, and those get mapped with a different emphasis from a family car, aimed at pulling cleanly when laden rather than at anything happening near the red line. Car remaps start from £129. Vans and commercial vehicles are priced per vehicle, because the work involved varies so much between them. Tell us the model and you will get a number on the phone.
