ECU Remapping in Staverton
The nearest town to Staverton is Daventry at a little over two miles. After that it is Rugby at close to nine and Northampton at thirteen. So having anything done to a vehicle usually means a drive, a wait and a drive back. Our answer to that is straightforward. We come to the village.
Nobody should lose a morning to this
The standard version of this job involves booking the car in somewhere, dropping it off, arranging a lift home or sitting about, then going back for it later. For a village where the nearest town is a couple of miles away and everything else is nine or more, that is most of a day gone for work that takes well under two hours.
We run a mobile service, so the equipment comes to the vehicle. A driveway is perfect, a farm yard or a bit of hard standing works fine, and a quiet lane is usually acceptable. What we need is somewhere the vehicle can sit with the engine able to run, the doors able to open, and a decent stretch of road nearby to drive it on properly. Out here that is the easy part.
The job itself is about an hour, a little longer on some vehicles. That is short enough to fit around whatever else your day is doing, and you get to watch it happen rather than hand the keys over and hope. There is more on how the mobile side works on our mobile ECU remapping in Rugby page.
What happens when we get there
First the original calibration is read off the ECU and stored. That is the safety net for everything afterwards, and it is why reverting is a small job rather than a drama. Then the engine is logged on the road, because a datasheet tells you what an engine of that type is supposed to do and logging tells you what yours is actually doing right now.
With that in front of us, fuelling, boost and timing get adjusted for how the vehicle is used rather than for an average of every owner in every market. Then it is driven and logged a second time. That final step is the one that separates a map from a gamble, because it is the only way to confirm the change did what it was intended to and that nothing is sitting outside sensible limits.
Nothing about being on a driveway makes that a lesser job. The single genuine exception is a small number of control units that have to be opened and read on a bench, and if yours is one of those we will tell you at the enquiry stage rather than discovering it in front of you.
No need to drive anywhereTell us where the vehicle sits in Staverton and we will tell you honestly whether the spot works and what the job would involve.
Call 07773 694570When the honest answer is do not bother
We turn work down fairly often. If a vehicle has a fault stored, a service long overdue, a clutch that is already slipping or an engine that has been quietly getting worse, adding torque brings the failure forward. It does not cause a new problem so much as find the existing one, and it never picks a helpful moment to do it.
The other honest no is the money. Car remaps from £129, with vans and commercial vehicles quoted per vehicle. If your mileage is low and the driving is mostly short local trips, an economy biased map will take a very long time to repay that, and we would rather say so on the phone than take a booking that was never going to work out for you.
And we will not put a percentage or a power figure on anything before we have seen the vehicle, because any number offered at that stage is invented and everybody involved knows it. What we will tell you is where in the rev range the difference should show up, how it ought to feel from the driver's seat and what sort of driving it suits. That is the answer that actually helps you decide whether to spend the money.
The villages this page covers
Staverton is around fourteen and a half miles south of the workshop in Lutterworth, and one trip down covers a good deal of ground. This page now serves Badby, Byfield, Charwelton and Church Charwelton, Hellidon, Preston Capes, Fawsley, Upper and Lower Catesby, Upper and Lower Boddington and Westhorp alongside the village itself.
If a nearby town is closer to you, it has a page of its own. Daventry is a little over two miles and Welton about four. Rugby sits at nearly nine miles and Northampton at thirteen, which is the sort of distance that makes the mobile service worth having in the first place.
Remapping in Staverton: your questions answered
Do you really come out to a village this size?
Yes, that is how most of our work is done. Staverton is around fourteen and a half miles south of the workshop in Lutterworth and we bring everything with us. Driveway, yard, hard standing or a quiet lane, as long as the vehicle can sit with the engine able to run and there is a reasonable road nearby to drive it on afterwards.
Is a job done on my driveway as good as one done in a workshop?
It is the same job. Same equipment out of the van, the same original file saved, the same map written for your specific vehicle, the same logging on the road before and after. A car does not behave differently because of where it was standing when the file was written. The only real exception is a control unit that must be read on a bench, and we check that in advance.
What does it cost?
Car remaps from £129. Vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle, because the work genuinely differs between them. We will tell you the figure for yours before you commit. If we think a map is a poor use of your money given how the vehicle is used, we will say that first rather than wait until afterwards.
Which villages are covered by this page?
Badby, Byfield, Charwelton and Church Charwelton, Hellidon, Preston Capes, Fawsley, Upper and Lower Catesby, Upper and Lower Boddington and Westhorp, as well as Staverton itself. Daventry and Welton are close by and have their own pages. If you are somewhere small that is not listed, ring anyway, because the boundaries are softer than a list makes them look.
How long will you be at the vehicle?
About an hour, a little longer on some vehicles. That includes reading and storing the standard file, logging the engine on a road drive, writing and loading the map, and then a second drive with logging to confirm the result. If your vehicle is one of the slower ones to read and write we will tell you when you book rather than on the day.
Will it help with towing or a loaded vehicle?
Usually, and it is worth mentioning when you ring. Towing and carrying weight ask an engine for sustained effort at fairly low road speed, which is demanding for a turbo diesel. Knowing that, we bias the map towards mid range pulling power and keep a wider margin on temperatures instead of chasing anything at the top end of the rev range.
What if the vehicle has been standing for a while?
Say so when you book. A battery that has sat unused often starts the engine perfectly well and then fails to hold steady voltage for a sustained period, which is exactly what writing to an ECU requires. A battery giving up part way through is the most common reason a job has to be stopped, so it is much better to know beforehand.
Do you ever turn work away?
Fairly regularly. A stored fault, a long overdue service, a slipping clutch or an engine that has been getting steadily worse all mean a map brings a failure forward rather than improving anything. Low mileage is the other common reason, because the saving never repays the cost. We would rather lose the booking on the phone than have you ring back disappointed.
Can everything be put back to standard?
Yes. We lift the original software off before anything is written and keep it, so reverting is a small job. That comes up when people sell a vehicle, when a lease is ending, or when a dealer wants everything standard before looking at something. Ask at any point and it goes back to exactly how it was.
Do I have to tell the insurance company?
Yes. A remap is a modification and belongs on the policy like any other change. Most insurers are entirely relaxed about it and the call takes a couple of minutes. The reason it matters is narrow but serious: an undeclared modification can cause trouble at the exact moment you need the policy to work, which is during a claim.
