A fixed commute gives a filter a very predictable life
A DPF collects soot and then burns it off in a regeneration, which needs the exhaust hot enough for long enough. Whether that happens is decided almost entirely by the journey. In a town where most people repeat one journey daily, the filter is not being asked a different question each morning. It gets asked the same question, and it gives the same answer, which is why the fault tends to arrive on a schedule rather than out of nowhere.
The awkward case is a commute that is long enough to start a regeneration but too short to finish one. If your run takes a set number of minutes and the cycle needs more, you are switching off at roughly the same stage every day. Instead of clearing, the filter climbs a step, and the step repeats. Drivers describe that as the light coming on every few months no matter what they do, and that description is usually accurate.
The opposite pattern is just as informative. If you are doing a proper sustained run down the A444 and onto the M6 every day, the vehicle is getting everything it needs to regenerate. A filter that still blocks under those conditions is not blocking because of how you drive. Something upstream is putting more soot in than the cycle can burn off, and that is the thing worth finding.
Diagnosis comes before anything touches the filter
We start by reading live data rather than simply pulling a code. That means the pressure differential across the filter, the soot loading and the ash loading as the ECU calculates them, exhaust gas temperatures, and the regeneration history: how many the vehicle has attempted and how many it managed to complete. A car that is trying and failing has a different problem from a car that is never trying at all, and the repair is different too.
Then we look upstream. An injector that is not atomising properly, a turbo passing oil, an EGR valve stuck part open, or a temperature or pressure sensor giving the ECU a wrong reading will all fill a filter or stop it clearing. On a vehicle doing a consistent daily route, these show up clearly in the data, because there is no unusual driving pattern muddying what you are looking at.
Sometimes the honest finding is that the filter is finished. Soot can be burned away but ash cannot, and a filter carrying high ash loading, or one whose pressure differential stays up after a successful regeneration, will not be rescued by cleaning. We will tell you that rather than charge you for a regeneration we already know will not hold.

We do not remove diesel particulate filters, and we will not write software that behaves as though a missing one is still fitted. On a vehicle used on the road it is an MOT failure, it makes the car unlawful to use afterwards, and it can cause you a problem with your insurer. Whatever the vehicle is and however it is used, that is not work we take on.
EGR and AdBlue are the same answer. We diagnose them, we repair them, and we get them doing the job they were designed to do. We do not blank them, delete them or emulate them. AdBlue faults in particular are often a crystallised injector, a heater, a pump or a quality sensor rather than the whole system, and they reward proper diagnosis instead of hopeful part swapping. If a delete is what you are after, we are not the people to ring.

The light has just come on. Can I carry on driving to work?
A steady light normally means the filter is loading and the vehicle would like a sustained run to clear it, so completing your journey is usually fine and may even help. A flashing light, a drop into limp mode, or the DPF warning appearing alongside other lights means stop and get it looked at. Carrying on in that state is how a filter that could have been cleaned becomes one that has to be replaced.
Would a longer run down the A444 and onto the motorway sort it?
It is worth trying if the light is steady and the car is otherwise driving normally. Twenty minutes or so at a sustained speed, in a slightly lower gear than you would usually choose, gives the exhaust the best chance of reaching and holding temperature. If the light is still there afterwards, the filter is too loaded to clear itself or something else is preventing the cycle from running.
Why does it keep blocking when my journey is exactly the same every day?
Because if that journey does not allow a regeneration to complete, it never allows one to complete. The filter loads in the same increments and reaches the same limit again and again. It is one of the more solvable versions of this fault, because the pattern is consistent enough to work with once we have seen the regeneration history.
Do you remove DPFs?
No. Removing one from a road going vehicle is an MOT failure and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, and we will not write software that pretends the filter is still there either. What we do is diagnose the cause, clean the filter and run a forced regeneration where the vehicle can safely take one.
What is a forced regeneration?
It is a regeneration commanded through the ECU with the vehicle stationary, rather than waiting for the car to decide to run one. It deliberately raises exhaust temperature to burn off trapped soot. It is only appropriate when the loading is inside a range the vehicle can clear safely, which is one of the things the diagnostics are establishing first.
How do you know whether it can be cleaned or needs replacing?
The live data tells most of the story. Soot burns off, ash does not. A filter showing high calculated ash loading, or one where the pressure differential stays high after a regeneration that otherwise completed properly, is at the end of its working life. We would rather say so than take money for a clean that is going to come straight back.
Can this be done at my house or at work?
Usually yes. Diagnostics, live data and a forced regeneration are all done at the vehicle, which suits a driver whose car is only ever on the drive or in a work car park. If the filter has to come off for a deep clean, or the fault turns out to need a workshop, you will hear that before any work starts.
Will remapping the car fix the DPF?
No, and anyone saying otherwise is selling rather than diagnosing. Software does not unblock a filter. Once the underlying cause is repaired, a properly written map can help by reducing how much soot the engine makes, but that is a sensible second step rather than the fix itself.
Is short local driving around the town really that bad for a diesel?
It is the hardest use a filter gets, yes. Short trips where the exhaust never reaches temperature mean soot goes in and is rarely burned out, and a regeneration that starts and is then cut short when you park can leave things worse than before it began. It does not mean a diesel is wrong for you, but it does mean the car needs a proper run now and then.
What about EGR and AdBlue warnings?
We diagnose and repair both. A sticking EGR valve carboned up over time can often be cleaned and freed, while one that has failed electrically needs replacing. AdBlue problems are commonly a crystallised injector, a heater fault in cold weather, pump failure or a quality sensor. What we will not do is blank, delete or emulate either system.
What does DPF work cost?
It depends on what the diagnostics find, which is why there is no flat figure to quote. A straightforward diagnosis followed by a forced regeneration is a very different job from a filter that has to come off, or from an injector fault that has to be dealt with before anything else is worth doing.
