The gearbox is making decisions about your engine

The transmission control unit decides when to change gear, how quickly, how firmly, how long it will hang on to a ratio, and how willing it is to drop down when you ask for something. Manufacturers set all of that conservatively, because the same software has to feel acceptable to every possible driver in every possible condition and survive the worst case they can imagine.

Tuning it adjusts those decisions. Shift speed can be sharpened, the hesitation before a kickdown reduced, the shift points moved to suit the torque the engine actually produces, and clamping pressure raised where the standard figure is marginal for what is being asked of it. Which of those matter depends entirely on what irritates you about the car now, which is why the first question is about the symptom rather than the specification.

None of it is about making a car feel harsh. It is about the gearbox and the engine agreeing with each other, which on plenty of standard automatics they only roughly do. The factory settings are a compromise reached for a global market and a legal test cycle rather than for the way you drive to work, and there is very often a noticeably better compromise available for one specific car.

Why it comes up after an engine map

Add torque to an engine and leave the transmission software untouched, and the gearbox is now making decisions based on an engine that no longer exists. At the mild end, that means the shift points are in slightly the wrong place and the car never feels quite as coherent as it should. At the other end, the clutches are being asked to hold rather more than the standard clamping pressure was set up to manage.

That is the main reason it gets raised when people ring about a performance map on an automatic. Doing both is usually the difference between a car that is quicker and a car that is genuinely nicer to drive, because the two halves have been written to work together rather than one being bolted onto the other.

If you are having the engine done anyway, it is worth asking the question then rather than six months later, because both halves can be written and road tested as a single job with the vehicle in one place. That does not mean you have to commit to both. It means you get told, at the point the car is actually in front of us, whether the transmission side is likely to add anything for you.

Shift feel is a preference, and preferences move

Here is the part that makes Lutterworth different for this particular job. How firm a shift should be is not a technical answer, it is your answer, and most people do not actually know it until they have lived with the car for a fortnight. What felt decisive on the test drive can feel too abrupt in traffic on a wet Tuesday, or the other way round.

Describing the annoyance is usually more useful than naming the unit, because a hesitation pulling out of a junction and a reluctance to hold a gear on a slip road are different problems with different answers. Manual cars are out by definition, because there is no transmission control unit to write anything to. On a manual the engine map is the entire job and there is no second stage waiting to be sold to you. If somebody has offered to tune the gearbox on your manual car, they are either confused about what they are selling or hoping that you are, and neither is a promising start.

What is TCU remapping?

It is remapping the transmission control unit, which is the separate piece of software that decides how your automatic gearbox behaves, as opposed to the engine ECU that decides how the engine behaves. The two units talk to each other, and changing one without considering the other is where a lot of mapped automatics end up feeling disjointed.

What does it actually change about how the car drives?

Typically shift speed, where in the rev range the shifts happen, how quickly it responds when you ask for a lower gear, how long a ratio is held before it changes up, and clamping pressure where the standard setting is marginal for the torque being produced. Does it work on a manual?

No. A manual gearbox has no transmission control unit, so there is no software to write to. On a manual car the engine map is the entire job, and anybody offering to tune the gearbox on one is either confused or inventing work. That is worth knowing before you go shopping for it elsewhere.

Is it safe for the gearbox?

Done properly it is often kinder than leaving it alone, because the box is then matched to the engine it actually has rather than the one it was calibrated for. Done badly, with a generic file and no regard for the specific unit, it is not. That distinction is the whole thing, and it is why each one is written per vehicle.

Can it be put back to standard?

Yes. The original transmission file is read and saved before anything is written, exactly as with an engine map, so the car can be returned to factory software whenever you want. That matters particularly on an automatic if the vehicle is going back to a dealer for anything transmission related.

Should the engine and gearbox be done at the same time?

On an automatic that is usually the sensible approach, because the two can then be written to complement each other rather than one being adapted to the other later. It also means the road testing covers the pair working together, which is the only way to judge whether the shift points are actually in the right place.

How long does the work take?

Broadly comparable to an engine map, generally one to three hours depending on the vehicle and how the transmission control unit has to be accessed. Some units take noticeably longer to read and write than others. You will be given a realistic idea at the enquiry stage so you can plan around it properly.

Does it have to be done at the workshop?

Not necessarily, and a good many are done at the vehicle. Some transmission control units do need to be accessed in a way that makes the workshop the sensible choice, and you will be told which category yours falls into before booking. Being in the town, neither option asks much of you, so it comes down to whichever fits your day.
