What the transmission software actually controls
The TCU decides when to shift, how quickly, how firmly, how willing it is to drop a gear when you ask, and how long it will hold a ratio before giving up on it. It also sets clamping pressure, which is how tightly the clutches are held for the torque being put through them. Manufacturers set all of that conservatively, prioritising smoothness and the worst case they can imagine anybody doing to the car.
Tuning it means moving shift points to suit the torque curve the engine actually has, reducing the delay before a kickdown, tightening up shift speed, and raising clamping pressure where the standard setting is marginal. How firm you want the shifts to feel is one of the things being decided, not a fixed outcome, so a car used for commuting can be made more decisive without becoming unpleasant in traffic.

If you add torque to an engine and leave the transmission software untouched, the box is making decisions based on an engine that no longer exists. At best the shift points are now in slightly the wrong place and the car feels less coherent than it should. At worst the clutches are being asked to hold more than the standard clamping pressure was ever set up for.
That is the main reason it gets raised at all. On a mapped automatic, matching the two is usually the difference between a car that is quicker and a car that is genuinely nicer to drive. Which gearboxes, and when the answer is no
Dual clutch and modern torque converter automatics are the usual candidates, but what is actually possible varies a great deal by manufacturer and by individual unit. Some are very open to it. Some are effectively closed, and no amount of wanting will change that. Manual cars have no transmission control unit to work on at all, so the engine map is the entire job there.

What is TCU remapping?
It is remapping the transmission control unit, the software that decides when and how an automatic gearbox shifts, as distinct from the engine ECU. The two are separate computers making separate decisions, and on a modern car they have to agree with each other for the vehicle to feel right.
My car hunts between gears on the same hill every day. Is that fixable?
Often yes, because that behaviour is usually a shift point sitting in an unhelpful place rather than anything mechanically wrong. Will it make the car uncomfortable in traffic?
It does not have to. How firm the shifts feel is one of the things being set rather than a fixed consequence, so a car that spends a lot of its life in slow moving traffic can be made more decisive without becoming harsh. Say what matters most to you and the balance gets weighted that way.
Do I need this if I have already had the engine mapped?
On an automatic it is worth considering. Once the engine makes more torque, the gearbox is working from assumptions that no longer match reality, which can leave shift points in the wrong place and can ask more of the clutches than the standard clamping pressure allows for. It is not compulsory, but it is usually the sensible completion of the job.
Does it work on a manual?
No. A manual has no transmission control unit, so there is no software to change. The engine map is the whole job on a manual car, and anybody suggesting otherwise is selling you something that does not exist. If you have a manual and want more from it, the conversation is about the engine calibration.
Which gearboxes can you work on?
Many modern dual clutch and torque converter automatics, though what is possible varies considerably by manufacturer and by unit. Some are very open to changes and others are effectively closed. Is it safe for the gearbox?
Done properly it is generally kinder, because the box ends up matched to the engine it actually has rather than a theoretical one. Done badly, with a generic file loaded without regard for the vehicle, it is not. That is why it is written per car and why clamping pressure is treated carefully rather than simply raised.
Can it be reversed?
Yes. The original transmission file is read and saved before anything is written, in exactly the same way as the engine file, so the car can be returned to the factory calibration. That is worth having whenever a vehicle is sold or a dealer wants it standard before a conversation.
Do I need to declare it to my insurer?
Yes. It is a modification to the vehicle and should be declared like any other. The same applies to an engine map. If the car is under warranty, leased or on finance, mention that when you ring as well, because it affects whether the work is a good idea in the first place.
How long does it take and can you come to me?
Usually comparable to an engine remap, around an hour to ninety minutes and longer on some vehicles depending on how the TCU is accessed.
