ECU Remapping in Anstey
If your diesel does the three and a half miles into Leicester and back most days, you may already know how that story ends. A light on the dash, a car that feels flat, somebody at a garage muttering about the filter. That pattern of driving causes more trouble in Anstey than anything else we see.
Three and a half miles is not enough for a diesel
A diesel particulate filter fills with soot as a matter of course and empties itself by burning that soot off, which needs the exhaust to get hot and stay hot for a sustained stretch. A short hop into Leicester does not do that. The engine is barely up to temperature by the time you are parking, so the filter keeps taking soot in and almost never gets a chance to clear it. Repeat that five days a week and the arithmetic only goes one way.
What makes it worse is the half finished regeneration. The vehicle decides to clean the filter, starts the process, and you switch off two minutes later because you have arrived. Do that often enough and you end up with fuel finding its way into the oil, a filter that never reads clear, and eventually a car in limp mode. If any of that sounds familiar it is a diagnostic job rather than a tuning one, and there is more on DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Leicester.
None of this means a diesel was the wrong choice for you. It means the car wants a long settled run now and again, and it means that when something does go wrong the cause is often the driving pattern rather than a failed part. Working out which of the two you are dealing with is most of the job, and it is worth a phone call before anybody spends money on parts.
What we do about a loaded filter, and what we refuse to do
We start on live data rather than the stored code, because the code only tells you the filter is loaded and nothing at all about why. Pressure across the filter, the soot and ash figures the ECU is calculating, exhaust temperatures, how many regenerations have been attempted against how many actually completed, and whether an injector, a turbo seal, a sticking EGR valve or a sensor reading wrong is putting more soot into the system than it was ever meant to handle.
Then we clean the filter properly, run a forced regeneration and check the numbers have genuinely come back down rather than assuming they have. We do not take filters off. We do not write software that pretends a missing one is still fitted. It fails an MOT, it makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, and no amount of explaining how you drive changes either of those two facts.
EGR and AdBlue get the same treatment. We diagnose them, repair them and get them behaving the way they were designed to. If what you are really after is a delete, we are the wrong people for it, and we would rather tell you that on the phone than have you waiting in for a van that was never going to do the job.

A map is not a cure for a full filter and we will not sell it as one. What it does do well on a car used like this is make the low and middle of the rev range more willing, so you are not pushing the engine hard to keep pace with traffic that is constantly stopping and starting. Less effort for the same progress tends to mean a cleaner burn as well as a nicer drive.
The sum changes if your week is bigger than the city run. Loughborough is under seven miles away and Hinckley around twelve, and if you cover that sort of distance with any regularity there is a real case for biasing the map towards economy instead. Economy remapping in Leicester explains how that bias works and, more usefully, when it does not pay for itself.
Fifteen miles north, and how we work that
Anstey is about fifteen miles north of the workshop in Lutterworth, far enough that we build it into a day rather than dropping in on the way past. In practice that means agreeing a time rather than a vague window, and it means we want the vehicle details before setting off so we arrive with the right equipment for it. The visit itself runs about an hour, sometimes ninety minutes.
We work on the car where it lives, so a driveway is ideal and a quiet street is usually fine. The factory calibration is copied off and kept before anything is written, which means nothing we do is permanent and the car can go back to standard whenever you decide you want it to. This page also covers Cropston, and if you are nearer Ratby or Rothley those have pages of their own.
Bringing it down to Lutterworth is an option too and plenty of people prefer it. Either way the useful first step is the call. Tell us the make, model, year and engine, what the car does in a normal week, and anything the dashboard has been telling you lately. That conversation usually settles whether the job is worth doing at all.
Remapping in Anstey: your questions answered
Do you come out to Anstey, or do I bring the car to you?
We come to you. Anstey is roughly fifteen miles north of the workshop in Lutterworth, which means we plan the trip into a day and agree a proper time with you rather than offering a loose window. A driveway is the easiest place to work, a quiet street usually does fine. If you would rather drive down to Lutterworth instead, that is equally welcome.
My DPF light keeps coming back and I only do short local trips. Will a remap sort it?
No, and anybody promising it will is selling rather than diagnosing. Software does not unblock a filter. The filter needs the cause found, then cleaning, then a forced regeneration with the live data checked afterwards. Once that is done and the underlying reason is dealt with, a properly written map can reduce how much soot the engine makes in the first place. That is a second step, not the fix.
Do you remove or blank DPFs?
We do not, on any vehicle, whatever it is used for. Removal is an MOT failure and leaves the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, and we will not write software that pretends a missing filter is still there. The same goes for blanking or emulating EGR and AdBlue. We diagnose those systems and repair them so they work as designed.
Is a diesel simply the wrong car for driving like this?
Not necessarily, but it does ask something of you. A filter needs a long, settled run at a decent speed every so often to clear itself properly, and a car that only ever does the run into Leicester will not get that on its own. If your mileage has changed since you bought it and it is now all short trips, that is worth a conversation before the filter forces one.
How long will you be at the car?
Usually about an hour, occasionally ninety minutes. That covers reading and saving the original calibration, logging how the engine is behaving on the road, writing and loading the map, and then logging again to confirm the change did what it was supposed to. A few vehicles are slower to read and write than others, and we will tell you in advance if yours is one of them.
Can it be put back exactly as it was?
Yes. Your original file is copied off the ECU and kept before a single value is altered, so the car can be returned to the state it was in when we arrived. People ask for that when they are selling, when a lease is ending, or when a dealer wants the vehicle standard before a warranty discussion. Putting it back takes very little time.
Do I need to tell my insurer?
Yes, and it is a short phone call. A remap counts as a modification in the same way a set of wheels does, and it needs declaring rather than assuming. Most insurers take it entirely in their stride once they know. The only time it becomes a problem is when it was never mentioned and then surfaces in the middle of a claim.
The car is still under manufacturer warranty. Should I wait?
Say so when you ring and we will give you a straight answer for your situation. A warranty can be affected if a fault is later traced back to the software, and finance or lease agreements sometimes carry their own conditions about modifications. We keep the original file so the car can go back to standard, but it is far better to understand where you stand before the work than after it.
Would a petrol car get anything worthwhile out of it?
A turbocharged petrol usually does, and they respond well. A naturally aspirated one has much less spare margin in its software, and on some of those the honest answer is that the gain would not justify the money. Tell us the exact engine when you ring and we will put yours in one category or the other before you commit to anything.
What should I have ready when I call?
Make, model, year and engine size, roughly where in Anstey or Cropston the car sits, and what you actually want out of it. Mention any warning lights, recent garage work or anything that has felt off. A battery in decent health matters more than people expect, because writing to an ECU needs steady voltage throughout, so flag it if you know yours is tired.

Highly recommend!! I recently had my VW Caddy remapped with Mercia Remaps. I'd converted the back into a camper and put a Tentbox on the roof, the added weight had really affected the performance and fuel consumption. Mark from Mercia was an absolute legend during the whole process.

Had my car remapped by Mark, great friendly service. Took the time to explain to me what he was doing & gave me options on which kind of remap I’d like. Car feels so much quicker & feels a lot more responsive. Highly recommend.
