ECU Remapping in Thurmaston
Leicester is three and a half miles away, which is the single most useful thing to know before anybody in Thurmaston spends money on a remap. A commute that short changes the honest answer to most of the questions people ring us with, starting with whether a fuel saving map will ever pay you back.
Three and a half miles does not add up, and we will say so
A fuel saving map works by repetition. It gives you the chance to cover the same ground on a little less, and that only becomes money if you cover a lot of ground. If your week is the run into the city and back, a supermarket trip and the school gates, there is not enough fuel going through the car for any saving to show up as a figure you would notice on a statement.
That is not modesty for the sake of it. Somebody who was told the truth stays a customer, and somebody who paid for a saving that never arrived tells everyone he knows. So the opening question is never what you drive. It is how far, how often and on what kind of road, and the sums usually answer themselves inside a minute on the phone.
It changes completely if your week is bigger than the city. Loughborough is a little under eight miles, and plenty of people here drive considerably further than that for work. If you are buying fuel on a fixed weekly schedule, the case becomes real and the payback becomes predictable. Economy remapping in Leicester sets out how that bias is written and where it stops being worth having.
What you will genuinely feel on this edge of the city
The gain on a Thurmaston car is rarely economy and it is never a number on a printout. It is the low and middle of the rev range, because that is the only part of it you use in traffic that keeps stopping and starting. More there means the car goes when you ask rather than a moment afterwards, you hold a gear where you would have changed down, and a short trip stops feeling like such hard work.
That is worth having even though it is unglamorous, and it is what most of the people who ring us from this side of Leicester really want once the conversation gets going. A car that is easier in traffic tends to get driven more calmly, which does it no harm at all. If yours is an automatic, the transmission software belongs in the same discussion, because a box left to work out a changed engine on its own shifts in the wrong places.
None of it needs to cost you a day. We come to the car and do the whole job where it stands, on a driveway or a quiet street, which around here is usually straightforward. Mobile ECU remapping in Leicester explains how that side of it works. Same equipment, same order of work, same road testing, whether the car is outside your house or in our workshop.

Call 07773 694570First, though, is the car actually well?
We ask about warning lights, recent garage work and how the thing has been behaving before agreeing to book anything, because a map mends nothing. A stored fault, a turbo beginning to pass oil or a cooling system already working hard will not be improved by asking the engine for more, and whatever gives up will not choose a convenient day to do it. Sometimes the answer is that a repair comes first and the map comes later.
Filters come up often on cars used for short journeys, and they want diagnosing rather than guessing at. We read live data, work out what filled it, clean the filter and run a forced regeneration, then check the numbers have genuinely fallen rather than assuming they have. We do not take filters off and we do not write software pretending a missing one is fitted. EGR and AdBlue are the same: diagnosed and repaired. More on DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Leicester.
Sixteen miles north, and the places this page covers
Thurmaston is roughly sixteen miles north of the workshop in Lutterworth. Close enough to be easy, far enough that we agree a proper time rather than promising to appear at some point, and we want the vehicle details in advance so we arrive with the right equipment for it. Expect an hour to ninety minutes at the car, including the road work before and after the file is written.
This page also covers Barkby Thorpe, Humberstone Garden, Nether Hall, Scraptoft and Wanlip. Syston is under two miles away and has its own page if that is nearer to where you are. Wherever you happen to be, the practical needs are the same: somewhere the car can sit with the engine able to run, the keys, and a battery that will hold its voltage while the ECU is being written to.
Bringing it down to Lutterworth is always an option and the job is identical either way. What is worth doing first is ringing. Make, model, year and engine, your weekly mileage, and whatever irritates you about how the car drives at the moment. That is enough for us to tell you whether this is worth your money before you have committed to anything.
Remapping in Thurmaston: your questions answered
I only drive into Leicester and back. Is a remap a waste of money for me?
Not necessarily, but a fuel saving one probably is, and we would rather say that before you pay. On a three or four mile commute there is not enough fuel passing through the car for a saving to add up. What can still be worth having is the low down response, because stop and start driving is exactly where that shows. Tell us your mileage and we will be straight about which applies.
How much fuel would it actually save me?
We will not put a percentage on it before seeing the vehicle, because any figure quoted blind is invented. What we can do is give you a realistic expectation for your specific car once we have looked at it, and be clear that a good part of the result depends on how you drive afterwards. Figures printed elsewhere tend to be best cases on the most suitable engines.
What will I notice sitting in traffic?
The car answering more promptly when you ask it to move, and needing fewer gear changes to do the same journey. Almost all of that happens low down and in the middle of the rev range, which is the only part of it a short urban run ever visits. Peak power at the top of the band is irrelevant to the sort of driving most people do around here.
Do you come out to Thurmaston, or is it workshop only?
We come to you. Thurmaston is about sixteen miles north of the workshop in Lutterworth, so we agree a time and plan it into the day. Driveway, quiet street or a work car park with permission all work. The vehicle needs to sit with the engine able to run for the duration. The workshop is there if you would rather bring it down instead.
Does an economy biased map make the car slower?
It does not. Nothing gets wound back. What changes is where the useful pull sits, so you can stay in a taller gear at lower revs and still keep up with everything around you. People generally describe the result as more relaxed to drive rather than slower, which is precisely the point of writing it that way in the first place.
My DPF light keeps coming on and I only do short trips. What happens next?
We look at the live data before anything else: pressure across the filter, the soot and ash figures, exhaust temperatures, and how many regenerations started against how many finished. That tells us whether the driving pattern filled it or whether something upstream is making more soot than it should. Then we clean it, force a regeneration and deal with the cause, rather than resetting the clock.
Do you remove DPFs, or blank EGR or AdBlue?
No, none of them, on any vehicle and for any reason. Removal is an MOT failure and leaves a car unlawful to use on the road, and we will not write software that pretends a part is still fitted when it is not. We diagnose those systems and repair them so they do their job. If a delete is what you are after, we are the wrong people.
Can everything be put back to how it was?
Yes. Your original calibration is copied off and stored before a single value is altered, so the car can be returned to exactly the state we found it in. That matters if you are selling it, handing a lease back, or if a dealer wants it standard before a warranty conversation. Ask and it goes back, and it does not take long.
Does my insurer need to know about it?
They do. A remap is a modification and should be declared like any other change to the car. It is a quick phone call and most insurers are entirely relaxed once they have been told. The problem only ever appears when nobody mentioned it and it comes to light during a claim, which is the worst possible time to discover a gap.
What do you need from me on the day?
Not much. Somewhere the car can sit safely for the visit, the keys, and a battery in reasonable condition. Everything else arrives in the van. If you will not be there yourself, we need to know who has the keys and be able to reach them, because we like to speak to somebody about the car before we start writing anything to it.
