ECU Remapping in Drayton (near Corby)

Drayton is about eighteen miles east of our workshop, which is far enough that the trip gets planned rather than squeezed into a gap. That is worth saying plainly, because it changes how you book and it means we ask a few more questions before setting off than we would for somewhere five minutes down the road.

How a visit this far out actually gets arranged

For somewhere eighteen miles away we want the vehicle details before the day, not on the doorstep. Make, model, year, engine, what it has had done and what it is doing now. That is not bureaucracy. It is so we turn up with the right equipment, know in advance whether your particular control unit can be read through the diagnostic port, and have some idea what we are likely to find.

The other half is where the vehicle will be. It needs somewhere it can sit with the engine able to run, doors able to open, and a road nearby that is fit to drive it on properly afterwards. Out here that is rarely a problem, which is one of the genuine advantages of working in a village rather than a town centre. Once we are with you, the work at the vehicle takes roughly an hour to ninety minutes.

If you would rather not wait for a trip east, the workshop in Lutterworth is always open to you instead, and some people prefer to combine the visit with something else they were doing that way anyway. Nothing about the work changes depending on which end of the journey it happens at. Get in touch either way, describe the vehicle and say roughly when suits you, and we will tell you honestly which of the two is going to be quicker.

What the driving round here does to an engine

Corby is the nearest town of any size at about four miles, Kettering is nearly nine and Leicester close to seventeen. That geography tells you most of what you need to know about the vehicles here. Almost nothing is a two minute errand. Anything worth leaving the house for is a proper drive at proper speed, and the engine reaches temperature and stays there.

That is the easy life as far as a modern diesel is concerned. Filters get the chance to clear themselves, oil stays where it should, and the sort of trouble that plagues cars doing four cold miles a day mostly does not appear. What does show up instead is the other pattern: cars and vans covering serious annual mileage where small inefficiencies add up into real money.

It also means a map is felt somewhere specific. On open road at a settled speed you notice a car that pulls from lower down and needs fewer gear changes to keep pace with what is in front of you. That is a driveability gain and an economy one at the same time, which is not true of every kind of driving. Economy remapping in Corby goes into when the sums work.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across Drayton and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

Being straight about whether it is worth the trip

We will not pretend every vehicle is a candidate. If the engine is tired, if there is a fault stored, if a service has been skipped or a clutch is already slipping, adding torque brings the failure forward rather than improving anything. We ask about all of that on the phone, and where the answer is that a repair should come first, we say so and the conversation ends there.

We also will not put numbers on it that we cannot stand behind. No percentage, no power figure, nothing quoted before we have seen your vehicle. What we will tell you is where in the rev range you should expect to feel a difference and who that sort of change suits, which is a more useful answer anyway.

Your original calibration is saved first and stays saved, which means anything done to the vehicle is reversible. That is not a sales line and it is not a favour we are doing you. It is the reason a dealer visit, a lease return or a sale two years from now does not become a complicated conversation about what somebody once wrote to your ECU. Ask for it back at any point and it goes back to exactly how the factory left it.

The villages on this page

One trip east covers a good deal of ground, so this page now serves Great Easton, Bringhurst, Caldecott, Blaston, Horninghold and Nevill Holt alongside Drayton itself. If you are in any of those and thinking about it, mention it when you ring, because two jobs in the same area on the same day is easier for everyone.

Nearby places have pages of their own if you are closer to one. Cottingham is a mile and a half away, Ashley a little over two, and Corby four. The boundaries matter less than the phone call, so if you are not sure which page applies to you, ring and ask.

Remapping in Drayton: your questions answered

Is Drayton too far out for you to come?

Not at all, but it is a planned trip rather than a same afternoon one. Drayton is about eighteen miles east of the workshop in Lutterworth, so we agree a date and a time rather than a loose window, and we want the vehicle details in advance so we arrive properly equipped. Once we are there the job is exactly the same as it would be anywhere else.

Which villages does this cover?

Great Easton, Bringhurst, Caldecott, Blaston, Horninghold and Nevill Holt, as well as Drayton itself. Cottingham, Ashley, Corby and Great Oakley are all close by and have pages of their own if one of those is nearer to you. If you are unsure which applies, it genuinely does not matter. Ring and tell us where you are.

What do you need to know before you set off?

Make, model, year and engine size, service history, any warning lights, anything that has been fitted or replaced, and where the vehicle will be standing. On a trip this length we would rather sort all of that beforehand than discover something on your driveway that means the job cannot go ahead that day.

Does living out in the country change what a map should do?

It changes the bias. Most of your mileage is settled running at a reasonable speed rather than short cold trips, so there is a genuine case for aiming the map at making the engine do the same work with less effort. If your week also includes towing or heavy loads, say so, because that pushes it in a different direction again.

How long will you be with the vehicle?

Roughly an hour to ninety minutes at the vehicle. That covers reading and storing the original file, logging the engine on the road, writing and loading the new map, and then logging a second time to check the result is what it should be. Some control units take longer to read and write than others and we will warn you if yours is one.

Will it help with towing?

It usually does, and it is worth telling us up front. Towing asks an engine for sustained effort at relatively low road speed, which is one of the harder jobs you can give a turbo diesel. Knowing that, we lean the map towards mid range pulling power and keep a wider margin on temperatures rather than chasing anything at the top end.

Can you put it back to standard afterwards?

Yes. The original calibration is read off and stored before anything is altered, so returning the vehicle to factory software is straightforward. People usually want that when selling, when handing back a lease, or before a dealer looks at something. It is a short job and you are welcome to ask for it at any point.

Do you ever say a vehicle is not worth mapping?

Regularly. A tired engine, a stored fault, an overdue service or a clutch that is already slipping all mean a map brings a failure forward rather than improving anything. Some engines simply have very little spare margin in their software. In either case we would rather tell you on the phone and lose the booking than take the money and have you ring back annoyed.

Do I need to tell my insurer about it?

Yes, treat it exactly as you would any other modification and declare it. It takes a couple of minutes on the phone and most insurers are entirely untroubled by it. The problem is never the modification itself. It is a modification that nobody knew about coming to light while a claim is being assessed.

Can I bring it to you instead of waiting for a trip east?

Absolutely, and some people prefer it. The workshop is on Rugby Road in Lutterworth and nothing about the job changes. If you were coming that way anyway it can be the quicker option. Ring first either way, because the phone call is where we work out whether the work is worth doing on your vehicle at all.

Mark is an absolute miracle worker! My EGR valve needed some attention and with his skilled hands he had my Jaguar back up and running in no time! Friendly service with a reassuring confidence. He knew exactly what needed to be done! Highly recommended!

Highly recommend!! I recently had my VW Caddy remapped with Mercia Remaps. I'd converted the back into a camper and put a Tentbox on the roof, the added weight had really affected the performance and fuel consumption. Mark from Mercia was an absolute legend during the whole process.

Harvey Broadbent · Google review

Had my car remapped by Mark, great friendly service. Took the time to explain to me what he was doing & gave me options on which kind of remap I’d like. Car feels so much quicker & feels a lot more responsive. Highly recommend.
