ECU Remapping in Brixworth
Brixworth is about six miles out from Northampton, and this page now covers the ring of villages around it as well: Spratton, Creaton, Pitsford, Lamport, Scaldwell, Old and the rest. None of them has a mapper on the doorstep. That is the whole reason we work out of a van instead of expecting you to drive to us.
Fourteen villages, and a drive to get to any of them
This page used to be about Brixworth on its own. It now covers the villages sitting around it too: Chapel Brampton and Church Brampton, Creaton and Little Creaton, Spratton, Hollowell, Teeton, Holdenby, Cottesbrooke, Lamport, Hanging Houghton, Scaldwell, Pitsford and Old. That is a wide, thinly settled piece of Northamptonshire where nothing much is on your doorstep, and where booking car work usually means driving somewhere else first and then working out how to get home. Moulton, three or four miles down the road, has its own page.
Which is the argument for a mobile mapper, and it is a stronger argument out here than it is in a town. The equipment goes in the van and we come to wherever the car lives. A driveway in Spratton, a yard in Hollowell, a space outside a house in Old. Work at the vehicle takes about an hour to ninety minutes, and you spend none of it arranging lifts.
Northampton is roughly six miles away and Kettering about nine, so the nearest workshops are not far in mileage. They are just far enough that dropping a car off and collecting it later swallows most of a day. Our own workshop is on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, around fifteen miles north west, and you are welcome to bring it if you prefer. Most people here find it easier the other way round, and there is more on mobile ECU remapping in Northampton.
Six miles into Northampton is an awkward distance for a diesel
A great deal of the mileage that starts around Brixworth is the run into Northampton and back. Six miles each way, most days of the week, usually with traffic at one end of it. That is long enough to be the main thing the car does and short enough that a diesel exhaust never really settles at temperature, especially through winter and especially if you stop on the way in.
That pattern is what fills a particulate filter. Soot goes in on every cold journey, and the regeneration meant to burn it back off needs sustained heat the car rarely gets. If your filter is already loading, software is not the answer to it and we will tell you so. It is a diagnostic job before it is anything else, and there is detail on how we go about it under DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Northampton.
What a map can sensibly do for a commute like that is move usable pull further down the rev range, so the engine does the same work at lower revs in a taller gear. On short journeys that is mostly a driveability gain rather than a fuel one. We would rather describe it in those terms than promise you a saving that only really appears on long motorway runs you never make.
Somewhere around Brixworth we can reach the car?Spratton, Pitsford, Creaton, Old or anywhere between them. Tell us the vehicle and where it sits and we will give you a time.
Call 07773 694570The file gets written for your car, not for its engine code
It starts with reading the original calibration off the ECU and saving it. Then the engine is logged on the road, so we can see what it is genuinely doing rather than what it ought to be doing. Fuelling, boost and timing get adjusted for the way you actually use the car, the map goes on, and it is logged again to confirm the change landed where it was meant to and that nothing is sitting outside sensible limits.
Holding on to that original file matters more than people expect. The car can go back to exactly the state it was in when we arrived, which is what you want if you sell it, hand a lease back, or a dealer wants it standard before a warranty conversation. Returning it takes minutes and nobody needs to make an occasion out of asking.
Where we can work, and when we will tell you not to bother
Practically, the car needs somewhere it can sit with the engine able to run and a door able to open. Driveways are ideal and most village parking is workable. The thing that genuinely halts a job is battery condition, because writing to an ECU needs steady voltage for the whole process, and a battery that starts the car perfectly well can still let go partway through. If you already know yours is tired, mention it when you ring.
The other honest warning is that a remap repairs nothing. A tired turbo, a leaking injector, a sticking EGR valve or a filter that is already blocked will all still be there afterwards, with more asked of them. We want to hear about warning lights and service history before agreeing to anything, and if the answer is that your car needs a repair rather than software, that is what you will be told.
Remapping in brixworth: your questions answered
Do you come out to the villages, or only to Brixworth itself?
The villages are the point of this page. Chapel Brampton, Church Brampton, Spratton, Creaton, Hollowell, Teeton, Holdenby, Cottesbrooke, Lamport, Hanging Houghton, Scaldwell, Pitsford and Old are all covered, and so is Brixworth. Tell us roughly where the car sits when you ring and we will confirm it before anything is booked. Nothing in that list is a problem to reach.
How long do you need the car for?
About an hour to ninety minutes at the vehicle for most jobs. That covers reading and saving the original calibration, logging the engine on the road, writing and loading the map, and logging again afterwards to check the result. Some control units read and write more slowly than others, and if yours is one of them we will say so when you book rather than on the day.
My commute into Northampton is only six miles. Is a map worth it?
It depends what you want from it. If you are hoping for a fuel saving, six miles twice a day is not much of a return and we will be honest about that. If what bothers you is how the car feels pulling away and picking up in the lower half of the rev range, that is the part a map genuinely changes and you will notice it every morning. Tell us which one you are after.
Will a remap help my DPF or make it worse?
Neither, on its own. A properly written map should not add to how much soot the engine makes, and on some vehicles it makes slightly less. What it cannot do is unblock a filter that is already loaded. If yours is filling faster than it clears, that needs diagnosing, cleaning and a forced regeneration first, and the cause needs finding, or you will be back in the same position in a few months.
Can the car be put back to standard afterwards?
Yes, and it is saved before anything is written so that it always can be. The original calibration comes off the ECU and gets stored, which means the car can be returned to precisely the state it was in when we turned up. People ask for it when selling, when handing a lease back, or occasionally because they want to drive both versions and make their own mind up.
Do I need to tell my insurer?
Yes. A remap counts as a modification and should be declared the same way you would declare wheels or suspension. Most insurers take it in their stride once they have been told. The only time it becomes a real problem is when it was never declared and then surfaces during a claim, which is the worst possible moment to be having that conversation.
There is no driveway, just the road outside. Does that rule me out?
Usually not. A quiet village road where the car can sit safely and legally for the visit is fine, and most of the streets around here qualify. What does not work is somewhere with constant passing traffic and no room to open a door. Describe where it parks when you ring and you will get a straight answer rather than a wasted trip for both of us.
The car has a warning light on at the moment. Can you still map it?
We would want to understand it first. Mapping over a stored fault does not clear it, it just adds load to something that is already struggling, and the weakness tends to show itself at the least convenient time. Tell us the code or describe the symptom when you ring. Quite often that conversation alone settles whether anything should be booked at all.
Do you work on petrol cars as well as diesels?
Both. Turbocharged petrols usually have useful margin in the software and respond well. Naturally aspirated petrols have far less to work with, and on some of them the honest answer is that what you would gain does not justify what it costs. Give us the exact engine and we will tell you which side of that line yours falls on before you commit to anything.
What should I have ready when I ring?
Make, model, year and engine size, roughly where in Brixworth or which village the car is, and what you actually want out of it. Mention any warning lights, recent work, or anything that has felt off. If the battery is old or the car has been standing for weeks, say so, because a weak battery during a write is the most common reason a visit has to be stopped halfway through.
