ECU Remapping in Moulton
Moulton is four miles north of Northampton, and this page now carries the places that sit in the band between the two: Boughton, Boothville, Round Spinney, Overstone, Little Billing, Southfields, Standens Barn and several more. Most of the driving that starts around there is short, local and full of junctions. That has consequences.
One page, fourteen names, and none of them far from anything
Alongside Moulton itself this page now covers Boughton, Boothville, Blackthorn, Goldings, Lings, Holcot, Little Billing, Moulton Leys, Overstone and Overstone Lodge, Round Spinney, Southfields, Standens Barn and Sywell. They are not one place, but they share a driving pattern. Northampton is about four miles off, Kettering is nine and Corby fifteen, so almost nothing a vehicle here does on a normal weekday is a long run at a settled speed.
For getting work done, that closeness is deceptive. A garage is never more than a short drive away, which sounds convenient until you try to arrange being without the car for a day and getting yourself home and back again. We turn up where the vehicle already is, do the work in about an hour to ninety minutes and leave. Brixworth, three and a half miles up the road, is covered on its own page.
Short journeys are hard on the gearbox as well as the engine
Plenty of the vehicles around here are automatics, and on a diet of four mile trips with roundabouts in them an automatic spends its whole life shifting. The complaints we hear are rarely about outright speed. They are about hesitation when you ask for a gap in traffic, hunting between two gears on a gentle climb, or a box that will not settle at a steady thirty. Those are gearbox behaviours, not engine ones.
Where the transmission software can be adjusted, shift points, clamping pressure and the torque the box is allowed to accept can be brought into line with the engine rather than left fighting it. The honest part is that not every gearbox can be touched, and on some vehicles the sensible answer is to leave it alone. We will tell you which yours is before you commit. There is more under gearbox tuning in Northampton.
If you drive a manual, the same problem shows up differently. On short local runs you live between about fifteen hundred and twenty five hundred revs and almost never go above it, so what matters is how the engine pulls in exactly that window. Moving usable torque down into it means fewer changes and less effort for the same journey, and it is the part of a map you feel every single morning.

Call 07773 694570Every file is written against your vehicle, on the road
The factory calibration comes off the ECU first and gets saved. Then the engine is logged while the vehicle is driven, because a file written from an engine code alone is a guess about a vehicle nobody has looked at. Fuelling, boost and timing are set for how you actually use it, the map goes on, and a second set of logs confirms the result sits where it should and nothing is running outside sensible limits.
On emissions equipment the position does not move. Particulate filters, EGR systems and AdBlue systems get diagnosed, cleaned, force regenerated and repaired. They do not get removed, blanked, or hidden behind software that pretends a missing component is still there. That is an MOT failure and it makes a vehicle unlawful to drive, so if that is the job, it is not one we take on, whatever the vehicle is.
Coming out to you, and the paperwork side of it
Moulton is roughly eighteen and a half miles south east of the workshop in Lutterworth, so it is a booked visit rather than a spare hour, and it is a run we do often enough that fitting you in is rarely difficult. Earls Barton and Broughton are both close by. The workshop door is open too if you would rather bring the vehicle to Rugby Road in Lutterworth, and the work itself is identical either way.
Two things worth knowing before you book. Your insurer needs telling, because a remap is a modification like any other and the only version that causes real grief is the one discovered during a claim. And the original file stays saved, so the vehicle can go back to standard whenever you want, which is what people ask for at sale time or when a lease vehicle is due back.
Remapping in moulton: your questions answered
Which places does this page actually cover?
Moulton plus Boughton, Boothville, Blackthorn, Goldings, Lings, Holcot, Little Billing, Moulton Leys, Overstone, Overstone Lodge, Round Spinney, Southfields, Standens Barn and Sywell. They are grouped because they sit in the same stretch north of Northampton and share the same short journey driving. Say which one you are in when you call and it gets confirmed straight away, before anything goes in the diary.
Can the gearbox be adjusted as well as the engine?
On a lot of automatics, yes. Shift points, clamping pressure and the torque the box is permitted to take can be brought into line with what the engine is doing. On other vehicles the transmission software is either locked or not worth disturbing, and in that case we say so rather than charging for something marginal. Give us the exact model and year and you will get a definite answer.
The car hesitates before it changes gear. Would this fix that?
Possibly, but only if the cause is calibration rather than mechanical wear or a fluid that is long overdue. Hesitation is a symptom with several possible sources, and software only addresses one of them. That is why the vehicle gets driven and logged before anything is written. If what you have is a worn box, a map will make it feel worse rather than better and you would be right to be annoyed.
My daily drive is four miles into Northampton. Is a map pointless?
Not pointless, but be clear about what you are buying. Four miles each way will not deliver a fuel saving worth talking about, and we will not claim it does. What it does change is how the vehicle behaves in the rev range you actually use on that trip, which is low down and in traffic. If the current annoyance is flatness pulling away, that is the bit a map genuinely improves.
Do you come out, or do I bring the vehicle to you?
Either. Mostly we come to you, which is the point of working out of a van, and Moulton is a regular enough run at eighteen and a half miles that it is easy to arrange. If you would rather drive over to the workshop in Lutterworth you are welcome to, and nothing about the map changes. Whichever suits your week better is the right choice.
If I dislike it, can it be put back?
Yes, and quickly. The original calibration is read off and stored before anything is written, so returning the vehicle to its factory state is a short job rather than a rescue operation. Some people ask for it because they are selling, some because a dealer wants standard software before a warranty discussion, and occasionally because they simply preferred it the way it was.
Do you do anything with EGR or AdBlue?
We diagnose them, clean them, force a regeneration where that is what is needed, and repair them. We do not delete, blank or emulate any of it. Beyond being an MOT failure, it leaves a vehicle unlawful to use on the road and puts the problem onto whoever owns it next. Anyone offering it cheaply nearby is selling you a future MOT failure.
Does any of this apply to petrol engines?
Turbocharged petrols generally respond well and have real headroom in the software. Naturally aspirated petrols have very little to work with, and on some of them the truthful answer is that the gain does not justify the spend, so we will tell you not to bother. Engine code and year is all we need to place yours on one side of that line or the other.
What will you ask me on the phone?
Make, model, year and engine size, which village the vehicle is in and where it parks, whether it is manual or automatic, and what specifically you want different about how it drives. Also anything unusual it has been doing lately, including warning lights that come and go. That call decides whether a booking makes sense, and it sometimes ends with us saying it does not.
Is there anything that would stop the job once you arrive?
A battery that cannot hold voltage is the usual one. An ECU write needs a steady supply for the duration, and a battery strong enough to start the engine can still fade partway through. If the vehicle is slow to turn over on cold mornings or has been parked up for weeks, mention it beforehand so we can plan around it instead of stopping mid job.
