ECU Remapping in Coalville

Coalville is a town rather than a village, and the driving reflects that. Most people here work somewhere other than where they live and drive to it, with Loughborough about seven miles off and Leicester around eleven. Those out and back runs sit in an awkward middle distance, long enough to matter and short enough to cause bother.

The seven to twelve mile commute is the difficult one

There are two driving patterns everybody warns you about. One is the two mile hop where nothing ever warms up. The other is the long motorway haul that cooks everything nicely. The Coalville commute is neither. Seven miles to Loughborough or eleven or twelve to Leicester means the engine reaches proper operating temperature somewhere near the end of the journey, which is exactly when you arrive and switch it off.

That matters most on a diesel. A particulate filter empties itself by burning off soot, which needs sustained heat rather than a brief visit to it. On a journey of this length the vehicle often decides to start a regeneration towards the last few miles, and then you park. Do that repeatedly and you get a filter that never quite reads clear, fuel finding its way past the bores into the oil, and eventually a warning light nobody expected on a car that does decent mileage.

If that description fits yours, the first job is diagnostics rather than tuning. We read live data rather than just pulling the code, because the code tells you the filter is loaded and nothing whatever about why. There is more on what that involves on our DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Loughborough page, and it is the same approach wherever the vehicle happens to live.

Where a map earns its keep on a Coalville car

Assuming the vehicle is healthy, the change worth having is in the middle of the rev range. A commute made of roundabouts, junctions and short bursts up to speed lives between roughly fifteen hundred and three thousand revs and very rarely goes anywhere near the top. Bringing usable torque lower down means fewer gear changes to cover the same ground and a car that stops feeling like it needs a boot full of throttle to keep up.

The economy side is simple arithmetic rather than a claim. Twenty odd miles a day, five days a week, every week, is a fuel bill that repeats itself whether you think about it or not, and any reduction in it repeats at the same rate. That is a far better case than a car that mostly sits still. Tell us your weekly mileage and we will do the sum with you before you commit to anything, or read up on economy remapping in Loughborough first.

What we will not do is quote you a percentage over the phone. Any figure given before we have seen your vehicle is a guess, and the numbers advertised elsewhere are best cases on the most suitable engines driven by somebody trying to prove a point. You will get a realistic expectation for your specific car once we have looked at it, and an honest note about how much of it depends on your right foot afterwards.

This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across Coalville and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

A map written for your vehicle, not bought in for its engine code

The job goes the same way every time. We read the original calibration off the ECU and save it. We log the engine on the road so we can see how it is actually behaving rather than how it ought to be. We adjust fuelling, boost and timing for that vehicle and the use it gets. Then we log it again to confirm the change did what it was meant to and that nothing has been pushed outside sensible limits.

Keeping the original file matters more than people realise. It means the vehicle can go back to factory calibration in minutes, which is what you want when you are selling it, handing a lease back, or when a dealer wants everything standard for a warranty discussion. Nobody should be locked into a decision made on a Tuesday afternoon eighteen months ago.

There are things we refuse. We do not remove, blank or emulate diesel particulate filters, EGR valves or AdBlue systems, because removal is an MOT failure and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road. We diagnose those systems, clean them, force regenerate where that is the answer and repair what is broken. If somebody has quoted you for the other thing, that is a decision about your MOT as much as your engine.

Coming to Coalville, and what it costs

Coalville is about nineteen and a half miles north of the workshop in Lutterworth, which is a straightforward run rather than an expedition. We come to the vehicle: a driveway, a quiet street, a work car park with permission, anywhere it can sit with the engine able to run. Whitwick, Hugglescote, Bardon, Ravenstone, Agar Nook, Donington le Heath, New Swannington, Greenhill and Snibston are all covered by this page, and Ibstock is under three miles away.

Reckon on an hour to ninety minutes at the vehicle. That is short enough to fit a working morning or the gap before you need the car back, which for most people is the entire reason a mobile service exists. The workshop on Rugby Road in Lutterworth is there if you would rather bring it in, and nothing about the work changes if you do.

Car remaps start from £129, and vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle because the work involved is genuinely different. Before any of that, ring or send us the details with the make, model, year and engine, your rough weekly mileage and any warning lights. That conversation decides whether this is worth your money at all, and we would rather have it than not.

Remapping in Coalville: your questions answered

Do you come out to Coalville or do I bring the car to you?

Either. Coalville is around nineteen and a half miles north of our workshop in Lutterworth, so coming to you is a normal part of the week rather than a special trip. We can work at the vehicle on a driveway, a street or a work car park as long as whoever runs the site is happy. If you would rather bring it to Rugby Road in Lutterworth, you are welcome.

My DPF light keeps coming on and I do a decent daily mileage. Why?

That is a useful clue rather than a mystery. Twenty odd miles a day in two halves is not the same as twenty miles in one go, and a regeneration that starts near the end of your journey gets interrupted when you park. If the driving pattern should be clearing it and is not, something upstream is producing more soot than it should, and that needs diagnosing properly.

Can you clear a blocked filter at my house?

Usually a good deal of it, yes. The diagnostics, the live data and a forced regeneration can all be done at the vehicle. If the filter turns out to need removing for a deep clean, or the fault points at an injector or a sensor instead, we will tell you that before starting rather than halfway through. Sometimes the honest answer is that the filter is past cleaning.

Is it going to use more fuel or less?

That depends on you more than on us. Driven the same way afterwards, many cars use the same or a little less, because the engine is doing the same work with less effort. Driven the way the extra response invites, it will use more. Most people land somewhere in between. We will not promise you a percentage, because anyone who does before seeing the car is guessing.

How long is the vehicle tied up?

About an hour to ninety minutes in most cases. That covers saving the original file, logging the engine on the road, writing and loading the map, and logging again afterwards to check the result. Some vehicles read and write more slowly than others and we will flag that when you book, so you can plan around it rather than find out on the day.

Is Stage 2 worth paying for?

Not on a standard car, and we will say so rather than sell you one. Stage 2 assumes you have already changed how the engine breathes, usually intake and exhaust. Without that hardware there is nothing for the file to make use of. If you have fitted parts, tell us what they are and the map gets built around them. If you are planning to, ring before you buy, because the order matters.

Does it affect my warranty or my finance agreement?

It can, and it is better to know before than after. Manufacturer warranties, lease agreements and finance deals often carry conditions about modifications, and a fault traced back to a map can become an argument. We keep the original calibration so the vehicle can be returned to standard, but you should go in knowing where you stand. Say so at the enquiry stage and you will get a straight answer.

Do I need to declare it to my insurer?

Yes, every time. A remap is a modification like any other and it needs declaring. Most insurers deal with it without fuss when they are told up front. The trouble only ever appears when it was not declared and then comes to light during a claim, and by then the conversation is a lot less relaxed than a two minute phone call would have been.

Which villages around Coalville does this cover?

Whitwick, Hugglescote, Bardon, Ravenstone, Agar Nook, Donington le Heath, New Swannington, Greenhill and Snibston all come under this page. Ibstock, Markfield, Shepshed and Outwoods are all within a few miles and covered in their own right. If you are somewhere in that spread, it makes no practical difference to us which name you go by, so just ring.

What does it cost?

Car remaps start from £129. Vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle, because a small car derived van and a large diesel panel van are not the same job. We will give you the figure for your vehicle before you commit to anything, and if we think a map is a poor use of your money on that particular car we will tell you that instead of taking the booking.
