ECU Remapping in Outwoods

Outwoods sits in a corner of north west Leicestershire made up of small settlements rather than towns. Ashby-de-la-Zouch is under three miles away, Coalville a little over three, and Loughborough is the nearest place of any size at eight and a half. We reach all of it from Lutterworth, about twenty three miles south.

The patch this page actually covers

One page here has to do the work of a fair few names. Alongside Outwoods itself this now serves Coleorton, Coleorton Moor, Swannington, Thringstone, Osgathorpe, Peggs Green, Griffydam, Lount, Newbold, Church Town, Farm Town, Gelsmoor, Sinope and Woolrooms. If your address is one of those, you are in the right place, and there is no need to hunt for a page with your own village on the top of it.

It matters practically as well as tidily. Somewhere like this, the nearest anything is usually a few miles away, which means almost every journey is a drive and the car accumulates mileage whether or not anybody planned it that way. That is a different profile from a town car and it changes the advice, which is the whole reason for writing this page rather than copying one from somewhere else.

If you are closer to Ashby-de-la-Zouch or Coalville, both under three and a half miles off, those have pages of their own. Shepshed and Ibstock are around five miles and covered too. The van and the job are identical wherever you are, it is only a question of which name is nearest.

Twenty three miles is a planned visit, not a drop in

We are mobile, and the distance is worth being honest about. Outwoods is roughly twenty three miles north of the workshop, so a visit here is built into a day rather than squeezed between two other jobs. What that means for you is a firm time rather than a loose window, and a short phone call beforehand that does more work than people expect.

Before setting off we want the make, model, year and engine, so the right equipment is in the van the first time. We also want to know whether anything is showing on the dash and roughly what the car does in a normal week. Occasionally that conversation ends with us telling you not to bother, which is a better outcome for both of us than a wasted trip in either direction.

The job itself is the same anywhere: about an hour, sometimes ninety minutes, done where the vehicle is parked. A driveway is ideal and a quiet stretch of road is usually fine. Almost all of it happens from inside the car, so weather seldom stops anything, though the road work afterwards does need conditions where it can be done properly. There is background at mobile ECU remapping in Loughborough.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across outwoods and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

What a map does, and what it will not do

A custom map means reading the original calibration off your ECU, keeping it, logging how the engine behaves on the road under real load, adjusting fuelling, boost and timing around what that shows, and then logging it again afterwards to confirm the change did what it was meant to. It is not a file downloaded because an engine code matched, and the difference between those two things is most of the value.

The gain is felt in the middle of the rev range on almost every modern turbocharged engine, which is the part you use pulling away, climbing and overtaking. We will not put a percentage on that before seeing your vehicle. A number quoted over the phone is guesswork with confidence attached, and you would be entitled to hold us to it later.

What it will not do is repair anything. A tired turbo, a leaking injector, a sensor reading wrong or a service that never happened will all make a car feel flat, and adding torque on top of any of them brings the eventual bill forward. That is why the questions about history and warning lights come before the questions about what you want.

Filters, EGR and AdBlue: what we do and do not do

We do not remove particulate filters. We do not blank or emulate EGR valves or AdBlue systems. There is no vehicle, no use case and no explanation that changes that answer, because removal is an MOT failure and leaves the vehicle unlawful to use on the road. If that is what you are ringing for, we would rather tell you now than have you waiting in for a van that was never going to do it.

What we do instead is diagnose them. That means live data rather than just a stored code: pressure across the filter, the soot and ash figures the ECU is calculating, exhaust temperatures, and how many regenerations have been attempted against how many actually finished. Then cleaning, a forced regeneration, and a check afterwards that the numbers have genuinely come down instead of assuming they have.

Out here the driving pattern is often part of the story. A car that only ever does a few miles between settlements never gets the sustained heat a filter needs to clear itself, and that is worth knowing before anybody starts replacing parts. Sometimes the fix is mechanical, sometimes it is a change in how the car gets used, and sometimes it is both.

Remapping in outwoods: your questions answered

Which villages does this page cover?

Outwoods plus Coleorton and Coleorton Moor, Swannington, Thringstone, Osgathorpe, Peggs Green, Griffydam, Lount, Newbold, Church Town, Farm Town, Gelsmoor, Sinope and Woolrooms. If you are nearer Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Coalville, Shepshed or Ibstock, each of those has a page too, though it makes no difference to the work or to who turns up.

Twenty three miles from you. Is that too far?

No, but it does shape how we book it. A visit up here gets planned into the day rather than fitted around something else, so we agree a firm time with you instead of a vague window, and we ask for the vehicle details in advance so the right kit is in the van. Nothing about the job itself changes because of the distance.

Can you do it at the house?

Usually, yes. The vehicle needs somewhere it can sit with the engine able to run and a door able to open, which a driveway manages easily and a quiet stretch of road normally does too. A workplace car park works if whoever runs it is content. Multi storey and underground parking is the awkward case, because the road work has to happen somewhere sensible afterwards.

How long will it take?

An hour is typical and ninety minutes is not unusual. That covers copying and saving your original calibration, logging the engine on the road, writing and loading a map for your specific vehicle, and logging again to confirm it behaves the way it should. Certain vehicles read and write more slowly than others, and if yours is one you will be told when you book.

What does a map actually change?

Fuelling, boost and timing, adjusted for how your engine is genuinely behaving rather than how a generic file assumes it behaves. On a modern turbocharged engine the difference is felt in the middle of the rev range, which is where pulling away, climbing and overtaking all happen. We will tell you where the change lands rather than quoting a figure we would only be inventing.

Will it save me fuel?

Sometimes, and only under conditions worth stating plainly. If your mileage is regular and you drive the same way afterwards, the engine doing the same work with less effort can use slightly less. If you enjoy the extra willingness, you will use more. Anybody promising you a guaranteed saving without knowing your weekly mileage is selling rather than advising.

Do you remove DPFs?

No. Removal fails an MOT and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, and we will not write software that pretends a filter that is not there is still fitted. The same goes for blanking or emulating EGR and AdBlue. We diagnose those systems on live data, clean them, run a forced regeneration where that is the answer, and repair them properly.

There is a warning light on. Can you still map it?

We would want to understand it first. Mapping over an existing fault does not fix the fault, it just puts more load on something that is already struggling. Tell us the code or describe the symptom when you ring, and you will get an honest view on whether it needs sorting before a map makes any sense. Occasionally the answer is that it does not need a map at all.

Is it reversible?

Yes. Your factory file is saved before anything is altered, so the car can be put back exactly as it was. That comes up when people sell, when a lease ends, or when a dealer wants the vehicle standard before discussing a warranty claim. It takes very little time, and knowing it is possible tends to make the decision easier in the first place.

What do you need from me when I ring?

Make, model, year and engine size, which village the car is in, and a realistic description of what it does in a week. Flag any warning lights, recent garage work or anything that has felt off. If the car has been standing, mention the battery, because writing to an ECU needs steady voltage and a tired battery is the usual reason a job has to stop.

Marks a great guy, honest and does his best to offer the most accurate advice. Sorted out two of my vans In the space of 2 days, to get them on the road, running and making me money again. Highly recommend using his services. I will be going back for other vehicles to get work done.

Mark at Mercia Remaps was an absolute pleasure to deal with!! Had a Stage 1 tune/remap done to my Ford Ranger V6 Diesel 2025 and it's bloody fantastic.

Michael Noakes · Google review

I recently had a Stage 1 remap done by Mark and couldn’t be happier. He’s passionate about what he does and took the time to explain the process, what to expect, and gave me some recommendations for after the remap.
