ECU Remapping in Ibstock
Look at where Ibstock sits and one thing stands out. Loughborough is ten miles away, Hinckley about the same, Leicester nearly twelve. There is no big town on the doorstep, so almost nothing anybody drives from here is a short journey, and that changes what a remap is worth to you.
Ten miles to anywhere, and why that matters
Out in this part of west Leicestershire the nearest sizeable places are all roughly the same distance away and none of them are close. Loughborough is about ten miles, Hinckley a shade over ten in the other direction and Leicester nearly twelve. Whichever way you point the car in the morning, you are committing to a proper run, not nipping down the road and switching off before the heater has made its mind up.
That is the opposite of the problem we spend most of our time discussing with people living on the edge of a city. An engine that regularly gets up to temperature and stays there for twenty minutes is an engine doing what it was built to do. Oil gets properly hot, the exhaust gets properly hot, and a diesel particulate filter gets the sustained conditions it needs to clear itself without anyone intervening.
The practical upshot is that vehicles around Ibstock tend to arrive in better health than the short trip ones do, and that a map written for this sort of use has a real job to do rather than a marginal one. If the mileage is there and the roads are open, both the driveability change and the fuel side of it are worth taking seriously instead of talking you out of.
Where the change shows up on a ten mile run
Most of a journey like that is spent holding a speed rather than accelerating hard, so the part of the engine that matters is the low to middle section of the rev range, which is precisely where a standard calibration tends to be at its most cautious. Sharpen that and the vehicle stops asking for a lower gear every time the road rises or you need to be up to speed to join something faster.
Because those miles repeat, five or six days a week, a map biased towards economy is one of the few situations where the sums genuinely work. We will not put a percentage on it and you should be wary of anyone who does, because it depends on the vehicle, the roads and mostly on the driver. What we will say is that repeated settled mileage is the condition under which any of it adds up at all. Economy remapping in Loughborough covers what that file is actually aimed at.
If what you drive is a van, the conversation runs along the same lines but with load in it. A van that spends its life carrying weight and covering distance benefits from a map far more obviously than an empty car does, mostly in how little effort it takes to keep up on a climb. Van and commercial remapping in Hinckley goes through it, and we quote vans per vehicle rather than off a list.
Ten miles to anywhere means the mileage is realTell us the vehicle and roughly how many miles a week it covers. On this sort of driving there is usually something genuinely worth doing.
Call 07773 694570Eighteen miles north west, so the day gets planned
Ibstock is around eighteen miles from the workshop on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, out to the north west. That is comfortably a visit rather than a quick detour, so a few days notice makes a real difference to whether you get the time you asked for. The work happens where the vehicle already is and it takes about an hour to ninety minutes, and the option of driving to Lutterworth instead is always open if you would rather.
Nothing is written blind. The calibration on your ECU is read off and stored first, then the engine is logged out on the road so the file is built around what the vehicle is genuinely doing, and it is logged again afterwards to confirm the result. Keeping that original means the whole thing is reversible in minutes, for a sale, a lease going back or a dealer who wants to see standard software.
Some vehicles get turned down, and we would rather do that on the phone than on your drive. A stored fault, an overdue service, a clutch that is already slipping or a naturally aspirated petrol with very little slack in its software are all reasons to leave well alone. Ask about anything you are unsure of when you ring, or read through what a remap involves first.
The villages this page now covers
As well as Ibstock itself, this page takes in Ellistown, Bagworth, Battram, Belchers Bar, Heather, Nailstone, Newton Burgoland, Normanton le Heath, Odstone and Shackerstone. Say which of them you are in when you ring, because it helps with routing the day and because two vehicles in the same corner on the same visit is better for everybody involved.
A few of the larger places nearby have pages of their own rather than sitting on this one. Coalville is under three miles away, Market Bosworth is a little over four, Measham about the same and Markfield around five. There is no difference at all between them in what gets done or what it costs, so if you cannot tell which page is yours, ring and describe where the vehicle is parked.
Remapping in Ibstock: your questions answered
Which villages does this page cover?
Ibstock itself plus Ellistown, Bagworth, Battram, Belchers Bar, Heather, Nailstone, Newton Burgoland, Normanton le Heath, Odstone and Shackerstone. Coalville, Market Bosworth, Measham and Markfield are all within about five miles and have separate pages. None of that changes the job or the cost, so if you are unsure which page applies to you, just ring and say where you are.
How long does it take you to get out to Ibstock?
It is around eighteen miles from the workshop on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, out to the north west, so it is a planned visit rather than something slotted into a gap at short notice. Give us a few days where you can and you will get a much better choice of time. Once we are with the vehicle, reckon on an hour to ninety minutes.
Would an economy map actually save me anything?
On the mileage most people cover from here, it is one of the few situations where it stands a genuine chance. Savings come from repetition, and ten or twelve miles each way several days a week is exactly that. We will not quote you a percentage, because it depends heavily on the vehicle and even more on how it is driven, but the conditions are right.
What will I feel on a normal run?
The low and middle part of the rev range doing more of the work, so you reach for a lower gear less often on a climb and it takes less effort to get up to speed when you join a faster road. Peak output at the top of the rev band is not what gets aimed at, because on the roads you actually use it is the part nobody spends any time in.
Can you map a van?
Yes. With a van the useful part is usually how it behaves with weight in the back, particularly pulling away and holding a speed on a climb, which is where a standard calibration tends to be most conservative. Vans and commercial vehicles are quoted individually rather than off a price list, so ring with the exact model, engine and year and we will talk it through.
My DPF has never given me trouble. Will a map change that?
It should not, and on this sort of driving there is a reasonable chance it produces less soot for the filter to deal with rather than more. Long settled runs are what keeps a filter healthy in the first place, and you have them. If one ever does start giving trouble, that is diagnostics, cleaning and a forced regeneration, and it is a separate job from mapping.
Do you remove DPFs, EGR valves or AdBlue systems?
No, none of them, on any vehicle. Removal is an MOT failure and it makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, and we will not write software that pretends a part that has gone is still there. What we do instead is diagnose the fault, clean what can be cleaned, run a forced regeneration where that is the answer and repair what is broken.
Can the original software be put back?
Yes, and it is quick. The file already on the ECU is read off and stored before anything is changed, so the vehicle can go back to exactly the software it had before we touched it. That comes up when people sell, when a lease is being handed back, or when a main dealer wants to look at an unrelated fault on standard software.
Do I need to tell my insurance company?
Yes. It is a modification and it should be declared just like any other one. Most insurers handle it without any fuss at all once they know. The situation that causes genuine problems is the undeclared map that comes to light while a claim is being looked at, and that is the worst possible moment for the subject to come up.
What should I tell you when I ring?
The make, model, year and engine size, your weekly mileage and what sort of roads those miles are on, and which village the vehicle will be in. Mention any warning lights, recent work or anything fitted to it. Call 07773 694570 and that is usually enough for a realistic answer about whether the job is worth your money.
