ECU Remapping in Crick

Sit and watch the traffic through Crick for ten minutes and you learn something useful. With the rail freight terminal and M1 junction 18 on the doorstep, a great deal of what goes past is working vehicles covering serious weekly distance, and that changes what a map should be built to do.

A village that sees a lot of goods traffic

The freight terminal and the motorway junction put Crick on a stretch of road carrying far more commercial movement than a village of this size would otherwise generate. The result is a vehicle mix weighted towards Transits, Sprinters, Transporters, Vivaros and pickups, and towards drivers whose income depends on the thing starting every morning. Rugby is under six miles away, Northampton twelve and a half, and a lot of the local driving is between those points rather than around the village.

That pattern is the opposite of a short urban commute. Long stretches at a steady speed, often with weight on board, the turbo working continuously and the exhaust running hot enough to look after itself. It is an easier life for a diesel in most respects, but it is also a much narrower slice of the rev range, which is exactly why a generic file aimed at an average driver so often disappoints somebody here.

So the first question is never what figure you are after. It is how far, how often, how heavy and on what sort of road, because those four answers decide which part of the engine's behaviour is worth spending money on and which part is simply irrelevant to the way you earn a living. A driver doing twenty short local drops and one running the same long leg four times a week want opposite things out of the same engine.

Loaded and steady asks for a different shape

For anybody running a van out of here, the useful change is mid range pull, roughly the band between fifteen hundred and two and a half thousand revs where a loaded vehicle actually spends its working day. More there means fewer downshifts on a gradient, less right foot needed to hold a cruising speed with the back full, and a vehicle that does not feel like it is being dragged along by its own weight. Peak output at the top of the range does not enter into it.

Written the other way, biased towards economy rather than pull, the same principle serves the high mileage driver. Bringing usable torque lower down means you can change up earlier and stay in a taller gear, which is where fuel gets saved on consistent runs. That bias only pays if the mileage genuinely repeats every week, and there is more on how the arithmetic works under economy remapping in Rugby.

You do not get both at full strength, and anybody claiming otherwise is describing a leaflet rather than an engine. Every road map is a compromise between pull and frugality, and the actual work is deciding which way to lean it for you, which is a conversation rather than a box to tick. Say honestly which of the two matters more and that is the direction the file gets written in, then the logging afterwards confirms whether it landed where it was supposed to.

Thirteen villages now sit on this page

This page covers a wide spread of small places around Crick as well as the village itself: Kilsby, Yelvertoft, Lilbourne, Barby and Barby Nortoft, West Haddon, Welford, Winwick, Cold Ashby, Elkington, Clay Coton, Stanford on Avon and Thornby. None of them is far enough from the main route for it to make any practical difference to arranging a visit.

If you are nearer one of the neighbouring towns, they have their own pages. Rugby is under six miles, Long Buckby just under four, Welton around four and Daventry a little over six. Use whichever is closest to where the vehicle actually sits, because that is the only thing that changes about the job.

Eight miles, and no day lost to it

Crick is around eight miles south of the workshop in Lutterworth, which makes it one of the shorter runs and one of the easiest to fit around something else. The equipment travels in the van. A yard, a driveway, a customer site or the side of a job all work, provided the vehicle can sit with the engine able to run for the duration of the visit.

An hour to ninety minutes is typical. For an owner driver that difference matters more than anything else about the service, because a lunch break costs you nothing and a workshop day costs you a day's work. Before any of it, the original calibration is read and stored, so whatever gets written can be taken back off again whenever you want it gone.

Car remaps from £129. Vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle, because a two litre Transit Custom and a three litre Sprinter are genuinely different jobs and pretending they are not would only lead to an awkward conversation later. Tell us what you drive, what it carries and roughly where it lives during the week, and there is background reading on van and commercial remapping in Rugby while you make your mind up.

Remapping in crick: your questions answered

Do you cover the villages around Crick as well?

Yes. Kilsby, Yelvertoft, Lilbourne, Barby and Barby Nortoft, West Haddon, Welford, Winwick, Cold Ashby, Elkington, Clay Coton, Stanford on Avon and Thornby are all covered by this page. They are all within a few minutes of where we would already be, so there is no difference in how the visit gets arranged or what it involves.

My van does long motorway runs every week. Is that the best case?

It is one of the better ones, yes. Consistent high mileage at a settled speed is where a change to the shape of the torque curve repeats itself every single week, which is what makes the money back. It also means the exhaust stays hot enough for the filter to look after itself, so you are not fighting two problems at once. Tell us the weekly distance when you ring.

What actually improves when the van is loaded?

Mid range pull, roughly fifteen hundred to two and a half thousand revs. That is the band a working vehicle lives in with weight on board, and more there means fewer gear changes on a climb and less effort to hold a cruising speed. It is a driveability change rather than a headline figure, and it is the one drivers notice within the first mile.

Can you do it at a yard or on a customer site?

Usually, as long as whoever runs the site is content with it and the vehicle can sit with the engine able to run. A driveway at home works just as well. The one place that causes trouble is an underground or multi storey car park, because the road work has to happen somewhere and there is no sense mapping something you cannot then drive properly.

How long will the vehicle be tied up?

About an hour to ninety minutes in most cases. That covers reading and storing the original file, logging the engine on the road, writing and loading the map, then logging again to check the result. Some vehicles read and write more slowly than others and we will say so in advance if yours is one of them, rather than leaving you guessing on the day.

What does it cost?

Car remaps start from £129. Vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle, because the work involved in a small van and a large one is not the same. You will be given the figure for your vehicle before committing to anything, and if a map is not worth the money on the thing you drive, you will be told that instead of sold to.

Will it help with towing?

It usually does, and it is worth mentioning early. Towing puts an engine under sustained heavy load at fairly low road speed, which is one of the harder things a turbo diesel gets asked to do. A map written knowing about it leans on mid range torque and keeps a wider margin on temperatures rather than reaching for the top end. Say what you tow and how often.

Does a remap fix a fault?

No, and it will often make one arrive sooner. If the vehicle is down on power because a turbo is tired, an injector is leaking, the EGR is sticking or the filter is part blocked, mapping over the top of that hides the symptom for a while and then finds the weakness for you. Get the fault diagnosed first and the map afterwards, in that order.

Can it be returned to standard?

Yes. The original calibration is read off and kept before anything is written, so the vehicle can go back exactly as it was. That comes up when a van is being sold, when a lease is being handed back, or when a dealer wants everything standard before looking at a warranty item. Putting it back is quick and there is no fuss about asking.

Do I have to declare it?

Yes, to your insurer. It is a modification and it should be on the policy like any other change. Most insurers deal with it without much comment once they know. If the vehicle is on finance or on a lease, check the agreement too, because those sometimes carry their own conditions about modifications and it is better known before the work than after.

Highly recommend!! I recently had my VW Caddy remapped with Mercia Remaps. I'd converted the back into a camper and put a Tentbox on the roof, the added weight had really affected the performance and fuel consumption. Mark from Mercia was an absolute legend during the whole process.

Harvey Broadbent · Google review

Had my car remapped by Mark, great friendly service. Took the time to explain to me what he was doing & gave me options on which kind of remap I’d like. Car feels so much quicker & feels a lot more responsive. Highly recommend.
