ECU Remapping in Welton
Welton is two miles from Daventry, seven from Rugby and under twelve from our workshop in Lutterworth, which makes it one of the easier places on this site to get to. Braunston, Little Braunston and Ashby St Ledgers are covered from this page as well. The driving out here is the useful kind.
Close enough that arranging it is barely a job
Twelve miles south of Lutterworth is a short hop for a van full of equipment. Most of the places we work involve planning a day around the trip. Welton does not, and neither do Braunston, Little Braunston or Ashby St Ledgers, so if you want something looking at this week rather than next month, the answer here is usually yes. Long Buckby at three miles and Staverton at four are in the same bracket.
That matters more than it sounds. The alternative to a mobile mapper is leaving a car somewhere for a day, which around here means Daventry at two miles or Rugby at seven, and then solving the problem of how you get home and back. We arrive where the car already sits, work on it for about an hour to ninety minutes, and you never stop having a car.
Steady miles are the pattern a map actually repays
The mileage that starts in this part of Northamptonshire is not town mileage. Rugby is seven miles off and Northampton eleven, and getting to either means a proper run at a settled speed rather than a stop start crawl. That is the driving profile where a remap gives you the most back, because the benefit comes from the engine doing sustained work rather than from repeated cold starts and junctions.
What an economy biased map does is bring usable torque further down the rev range, so a given journey gets covered at lower revs and in a taller gear. You are not making the car slower and nothing is being turned down. You are closing the gap between how hard the engine is working and how hard it needs to. More on that under economy remapping in Rugby.
Whether that repays you is arithmetic, and it depends entirely on how many of those settled miles you cover in a week. Somebody running to Rugby and back most days has an easy case. Somebody using the car for two short trips a week does not, and will be told so on the phone. Car remaps from £129, with vans and commercial vehicles quoted per vehicle.
Welton, Braunston or Ashby St LedgersTwelve miles from the workshop, so booking a visit here is usually easy. Tell us the vehicle and roughly what your week's driving looks like.
Call 07773 694570The one thing that pattern of driving is genuinely good for
A diesel that regularly gets a run at a steady speed is a diesel whose exhaust reaches and holds proper temperature, which is exactly what a particulate filter needs to clear itself. Most filter problems we see come from cars that never get that chance. If your week includes a run down towards Northampton or over to Rugby, your filter has a far better life than one doing four miles twice a day.
It is not a guarantee, and if yours is already loading faster than it clears then that needs diagnosing and dealing with properly first. We clean, force regenerate and repair those systems. We do not remove, blank or emulate them, because it fails an MOT and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road. If a filter is the real problem, software is not the answer to it and we will say so plainly.
What the visit involves, and how to undo it
The original calibration is read off the ECU and saved before anything else happens. The engine is then logged on the road, because writing a file without driving the vehicle means writing it for an assumption. Fuelling, boost and timing are adjusted for how you actually use it, the map is loaded, and it is logged a second time to check the result landed where it should have done.
Keeping that original file means the car can be put back to standard whenever you want, which people ask for at sale time or when a lease vehicle is due back. Declare the map to your insurer as you would any other modification. And if you would rather come to us than have us come to you, the workshop is on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, a straightforward run north.
Remapping in Welton: your questions answered
How quickly can you get to Welton?
Faster than to most places on this site. You are under twelve miles south of the Lutterworth workshop, which means a visit here does not need a whole day planning around it. Give us a rough window and it is normally straightforward to fit in. Braunston, Little Braunston and Ashby St Ledgers are the same short run, and Long Buckby is only a mile or two further on.
I drive to Rugby most days. Is that good mileage for a remap?
It is close to ideal. Seven miles each way at a settled speed, repeated through the week, is the pattern where a map has the most chance to pay you back, because the engine spends real time working rather than warming up. Tell us your weekly total when you ring and the payback sum takes about a minute to do out loud.
Will an economy map make the car feel slow?
No. Nothing is reduced and no limit is tightened. Torque is brought lower in the rev range so the same journey is completed at fewer revs in a higher gear, which most drivers describe as the car feeling more relaxed rather than less capable. If you want the bias pointed the other way instead, that is a different map and worth saying on the call.
Does Daventry being two miles away make any difference to you?
Only to how easy it is to plan. It changes nothing about the work itself, which happens wherever the vehicle is parked. The reason it gets mentioned is that most people assume a mobile mapper must be more hassle than a garage, and out here the opposite is true, because you are never without the car for a day to get it done.
My DPF light has come on. Can a map sort it?
No, and anyone saying otherwise is selling you something. A blocked or loading filter needs diagnosing, cleaning and a forced regeneration, and the reason it got there needs finding or it returns within months. We do that work. We do not remove, blank or emulate the system, because that fails an MOT and leaves the vehicle unlawful to drive on the road.
Do you need a driveway?
Somewhere the vehicle can sit for an hour to ninety minutes with the engine able to run and the door able to open fully is all that is required. Driveways are ideal and most parking around Welton and Braunston works perfectly well. If the only option is a narrow spot with traffic passing close, say so when you ring and we will sort out an alternative between us.
Can it be taken off again?
Yes. The factory file comes off the ECU and is stored before any change is written, so the vehicle can be returned to exactly the state we found it in. Selling on, handing back a lease vehicle, or a dealer wanting standard software before a warranty conversation are the three usual reasons, and none of them is a problem.
Do I have to tell my insurance company?
Yes, treat it the way you would treat any other modification. Most insurers take it calmly and plenty do not change the premium at all. The situation to avoid is having it undeclared and then having it come up while a claim is being assessed, because that is when a cheap omission turns into an expensive one.
Do you work on vans as well as cars?
Yes. Car remaps start from £129 and vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle, because the work genuinely varies. On a van that carries weight, the sensible target is pull at the revs you actually sit at when loaded, rather than anything measured at the top end, and the road logs are what tell us where that is.
What should I have to hand when I call?
Make, model, year and engine, where the vehicle parks in Welton or whichever village you are in, roughly what mileage you cover in a week, and what you want different about how it drives. Mention warning lights and anything the car has been doing oddly. That is enough for an honest answer about whether booking anything is worth your money.
