ECU Remapping in Earl Shilton
You press the throttle to pull out, and for half a second nothing happens. Then it all arrives at once. That gap, rather than any figure on a printout, is what most people from Earl Shilton are describing when they ring us, and it is the part a properly written map does something about.
The half second that annoys you
Earl Shilton sits between Hinckley, about three and a half miles away, and Leicester at roughly nine, which means a lot of local driving is joining something that is already moving. You are rarely accelerating away on an empty road. You are pulling out, filtering in, or trying to make a gap that was fine when you looked at it. All of that asks for response at low and middle revs, and none of it cares about peak power.
The delay people complain about is usually the engine waiting for boost while the software hedges its bets. Manufacturers write calibrations that have to cope with fuel quality we never see, climates we never get and owners who miss services, and the caution that leaves behind shows up exactly where you notice it. A map written for your individual car can use some of that margin without touching a single component.
What that feels like on the road is the car doing what you asked when you asked it, rather than a moment later. Nothing dramatic, nothing that needs a different way of driving. Just the middle of the rev range being more willing, which on the roads around here is the part you live in. There is a general overview on our performance remapping in Hinckley page.
Written for your car, not for your engine code
A file that matches your engine code is not the same thing as a map for your car. Two vehicles with identical badges can have different service histories, different wear, different sensors drifting in different directions. Loading the same numbers into both and driving away is how people end up with something that feels sharp for a fortnight and then starts finding faults nobody knew were there.
So the process is deliberately dull. We read the original calibration off the ECU and keep it. We log the engine on the road to see what it is genuinely doing under load. Fuelling, boost and timing get adjusted around that, and then it is logged again afterwards so the change can be measured rather than assumed. The whole visit is normally an hour to ninety minutes.
Keeping your original file also means nothing here is a one way door. If you sell the car, hand a lease back or need it standard for a dealer, it goes back to the calibration it left the factory with. That takes very little time and it is worth knowing before you decide anything.
Describe the hesitation and we will tell you if it is softwareHalf of what gets blamed on the map is mechanical. It costs nothing to say what the car is doing before you book anything.

Earl Shilton is about nine and a half miles north west of the workshop in Lutterworth, which is one of the shorter runs we make. Practically, that means more flexibility about timing than we can offer at the edges of the area, and it is often possible to fit a job here either side of something else in the day rather than building a whole trip around it.
We come to the car. A driveway is the easiest place to work, a quiet street is usually fine, and a workplace car park works if whoever runs the site is happy about it. Nearly all of the job happens from inside the vehicle, so rain rarely changes anything, though the road work afterwards does need conditions where it can be done properly. There is more on how that works at mobile ECU remapping.
This page covers Elmesthorpe, Kirkby Mallory, Normanton Turville and Potters Marston as well. Barwell is a mile and a half away and has its own page, as does Burbage a little under four miles off, but the service and the van are the same wherever you happen to be parked.
When we say it is not worth doing
Response problems are not always software. A split boost hose, a coil pack on its way out, a sticking turbo vane or a car that is overdue a service will all produce exactly the hesitation people ask us to map away, and adding torque on top of any of those makes the eventual bill larger rather than smaller. We ask about warning lights, recent work and how it has been behaving before agreeing to book anything in.
The same applies to filters and emissions systems. We do not remove, blank or emulate particulate filters, EGR valves or AdBlue, on any vehicle and for any reason. A vehicle without its filter will not pass an MOT and is not lawful to use on the road, which is the end of the discussion regardless of how the car is driven. When one of those systems is at fault we diagnose it, clean and force regenerate where that is the answer, and repair it so it works as designed.
Remapping in Earl Shilton: your questions answered
Will it get rid of the hesitation when I pull out?
If the hesitation is the software being cautious, yes, that is exactly what it addresses. If it is a split hose, a tired coil pack or a turbo that is not doing its job, no map will fix it and we will say so rather than take the booking. Describe what the car does and when it does it, and we can usually tell which of the two you are dealing with before anyone arrives.
Is the extra torque safe for the engine and gearbox?
When it is written for the individual vehicle and kept inside what the drivetrain was designed for, yes. The risk comes from generic files loaded because an engine code matched, which is not how we work. Logging the engine on the road before and after means we can see what it is doing rather than hope. A car that is already unwell is a different conversation and we treat it as one.
You are only ten miles away. How quickly could you come out?
Ring and ask, because it depends what else is already in the diary, but Earl Shilton being under ten miles from Lutterworth means there is genuinely more flexibility here than at the far edges of the area. If the car is only available at particular times, say so up front and we will work around it rather than leave you guessing.
What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2?
Stage 1 is written for a vehicle with no hardware changes and works inside the margin the manufacturer left in the software. Stage 2 assumes you have already improved how the engine breathes, normally intake and exhaust. Writing a Stage 2 file for an otherwise standard car is charging you for something the vehicle cannot use, so we will not do it. If you have fitted parts, tell us what they are.
Someone has already mapped it. Does that rule me out?
Not at all, but mention it when you call. We can read what is currently on the car. Depending on what we find, we may suggest going back to your original file first so that we are building from a known starting point rather than layering work on top of somebody else's reasoning that we cannot see. That decision gets made with you, not behind your back.
Can the car be put back exactly as it is now?
Yes. Your factory calibration is copied off and stored before anything is written, so the vehicle can be returned to the state it was in when we pulled up. People ask for that when they are selling, when a lease is coming to an end, or when a dealer wants the car standard before looking at a warranty claim. Reversing it is quick.
Does the insurer need telling?
Yes, and it is a short call. A remap is a modification in the same way as wheels or suspension, and it needs declaring rather than assuming. Most insurers are entirely relaxed about it once told. It only becomes a problem when nobody mentioned it and it surfaces during a claim, at which point you are having the conversation from the worst possible position.
Do you work on petrol cars?
Yes. Turbocharged petrols respond well and make up a good share of the work. Naturally aspirated engines have far less spare margin in their software, and on some of them the honest answer is that the improvement will not justify the money. Give us the exact engine when you ring and we will put yours in one category or the other before you commit to anything.
Do you remove particulate filters?
No. It fails an MOT and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, and we will not write software that pretends a missing filter is still fitted. Blanking or emulating EGR and AdBlue gets the same response. We diagnose those systems, clean and force regenerate where that is what is needed, and repair them properly instead.
What do you need from me on the day?
Somewhere the car can sit with the engine able to run and a door able to open, the keys, and a battery in reasonable health. Everything else arrives with us. A weak battery is the most common reason a job has to be stopped part way, because writing to an ECU needs steady voltage throughout, so flag it in advance if the car has been standing.
