ECU Remapping in Burbage

How would you tell a map written for your car from a file somebody downloaded because the engine code matched? Mostly you cannot, until something goes wrong. Burbage is close enough to the Lutterworth workshop that we can do the whole thing in front of you and show you what changed.

The difference between a written map and a bought one

There is a trade in ready made files. Somebody types an engine code into a portal, a file comes back, it gets loaded onto your car and the van drives away. Sometimes the result is perfectly acceptable. Sometimes it is a file written for a vehicle in better health than yours, on fuel you cannot buy here, and the car spends the next two years quietly working harder than it should.

Writing one properly takes longer and is not complicated to describe. The original calibration is read off the ECU and stored. The engine is logged on the road so we can see what it is actually doing rather than what a datasheet says it ought to. Fuelling, boost and timing are adjusted for how the vehicle gets used. Then it is logged again, because the only honest way to know a change worked is to measure it.

That last step is the one most often skipped, and it is the one that catches problems. A car that is pulling well but running hotter than we want in a particular part of the rev range is something you find by looking, not by hoping. If you want the general background first, there is more on ECU remapping.

Being a mile from Hinckley makes this easy

Burbage sits just over a mile from Hinckley and about eight miles north west of our workshop, which puts it among the shorter runs we make. Practically that means we can be flexible about timing, and a Burbage job can often be fitted around something else in the day rather than needing a slot of its own.

Nuneaton is under five miles the other way, so plenty of people here are covering a decent daily distance without ever getting onto anything fast. That mixture of steady A road running and short local trips is worth mentioning when you ring, because it changes which way we would bias the map. There is more detail on performance remapping in Hinckley if that is the direction you are leaning.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across Burbage and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

Want to know what would actually be written to your car?Ring and ask. We will tell you what we would change, why, and whether we think it is worth doing on your vehicle.

When we tell people not to bother

A remap does not repair anything. If a boost hose is splitting, an injector is tired, a clutch is marginal or a service is badly overdue, adding torque finds that weakness sooner and never at a helpful moment. So we ask about history, warning lights and how the vehicle has been behaving before we agree to book a date, and sometimes that conversation ends with us saying no.

Saying no costs us the work and saves you a much bigger bill later, which is a trade we are happy to make. The same applies to engines with very little margin in them in the first place. Some naturally aspirated petrols will take a map and give you almost nothing back for it, and we would rather tell you that than take the money.

If the answer is yes, the work is reversible. Before a single value changes, the standard file comes off the ECU and gets stored, so the vehicle can be put back to exactly how the factory left it whenever you want. That matters at sale time, at the end of a lease, and in any conversation with a dealer.

The villages this covers

This page now covers the smaller places around Burbage as well as the village itself: Aston Flamville, Sketchley and Sketchley Old Village, Smockington, High Cross and Wigston Parva. All of them are a few minutes from where we would already be, so there is no difference in how we treat them.

Nearby towns have their own pages if you are closer to one of them. Hinckley is barely a mile away, Barwell under three, and Earl Shilton and Stoke Golding are both within four. Budget an hour and a half for the visit and you will often have the vehicle back sooner than that.

Remapping in Burbage: your questions answered

What makes a custom map different from a generic file?

A generic file is chosen because your engine code matches one in somebody's library. A custom map starts from your vehicle: the original calibration read off your ECU, the engine logged on the road so we can see its real behaviour, changes made for how you use it, then logged again to confirm. Two cars wearing the same badge can be in very different states of health, and only one of those approaches notices.

How far is Burbage from you?

About eight miles, and we come to the vehicle rather than expecting you to come to us. Hinckley is just over a mile from you and Nuneaton under five, so this is well inside the area we cover routinely. We work on driveways, quiet streets and yards. If you would prefer to bring it to the workshop in Lutterworth, that is fine too.

Do you cover Sketchley, Aston Flamville and the smaller places nearby?

Yes. This page covers Aston Flamville, Sketchley and Sketchley Old Village, Smockington, High Cross and Wigston Parva as well as Burbage itself. None of them are more than a few minutes from where we would already be parked, so there is no difference in how the job is arranged or carried out.

Will I feel it in normal driving, or only when pushing on?

Normal driving is where most people notice it. The useful change sits in the low and middle of the rev range, which is where you spend nearly all of your time on local roads. Pulling away cleanly, holding a gear up a rise instead of dropping one, overtaking without planning it. Peak figures at the top of the rev band are the part you almost never reach.

My car has a fault code stored. Can you still do it?

We would want to know what the code is first. Mapping over an existing fault does not fix it, it adds load to something already struggling, and it usually surfaces at the worst possible time. Tell us the code or just describe the symptom when you ring, and we will say honestly whether it needs sorting before a map makes any sense at all.

Can it be reversed later?

Yes, and quickly. The standard file is read off and stored before anything is written, so the vehicle can go back to the calibration it left the factory with. That comes up when people sell, when a lease is being handed back, or when a dealer wants everything standard before looking at something under warranty. There is no drama about asking for it.

Do you work on vans as well as cars?

Yes, on the ordinary working vehicles you see around here: Transits and Transit Customs, Sprinters and Vitos, Vivaros, Transporters, Trafics, Dispatches and the common pickups. What a van wants from a map is different from what a car wants, because it spends its life under load in a narrow band of revs, so tell us what you carry and how far when you ring.

Does it affect the DPF?

A well written map should not make a filter worse, and an engine producing less soot for the same work is generally better off. What software cannot do is unblock a filter that is already loaded. That is a diagnostic job with live data, a proper clean and a forced regeneration. We never remove, blank or emulate a DPF, an EGR or an AdBlue system.

Do I have to declare it on my insurance?

Yes. It is a modification and it belongs on the policy alongside anything else you have changed. Insurers are generally relaxed about it once told, and the call takes a couple of minutes. The reason to bother is simple: an undeclared modification only ever becomes an issue during a claim, which is the worst possible moment to discover it.

What do you need to know before booking?

Make, model, year and engine size to start with, then what you want out of it and how the vehicle is actually used day to day. Mention service history, warning lights, anything that has been done to it and anything that feels off. A tired battery is worth flagging as well, since an ECU needs steady voltage for the whole time it is being written to.

I brought my car in for a remap and DPF clean, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The team was professional, knowledgeable, and explained everything clearly before starting the work.
