ECU Remapping in Barwell
Barwell is a village with a town on its doorstep. Hinckley is a couple of miles down the road, Nuneaton under six, and most of what the cars here do is that sort of distance rather than anything long. It is a driving pattern that shapes what a map should be aiming at.
A village with a town two miles away
Plenty of people here are doing a couple of miles into Hinckley, or five or six over to Nuneaton, and doing it several times a day rather than once. The engine is cold for a decent part of that, the gearbox never really settles, and you spend far more time pulling away from junctions than you do holding a steady speed. Nothing about that is unusual for a village, but it is worth saying out loud before anybody talks about what a remap would do for you.
It also means most of the driving happens in the part of the rev range where a factory calibration is at its most cautious. Below about two and a half thousand revs a modern turbo engine is often holding back, waiting to be sure of what you want, and on a short local run that is nearly all you ever use. Move that around sensibly and the car feels more willing at exactly the speeds you actually drive at.
The other side of it is that a filter on a diesel used this way rarely gets a proper chance to clear itself, so we ask about that early. If your car has been showing lights or dropping into limp mode, the tuning conversation waits and a diagnostic one starts instead. There is more on how that is approached under DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Hinckley.
What gets changed, and what you would notice
Everything starts with your original calibration coming off the ECU and being stored, because work you cannot undo is not work we are willing to do. After that the car is driven and logged, so the decisions get made against how your engine behaves today rather than how the model behaved when it was new. Fuelling, boost and timing are then adjusted for the kind of running described above, and the car is logged a second time to confirm it.
What people describe afterwards is rarely anything to do with top speed. It is joining a busy road without having to plan the gap, staying in a higher gear on a gentle climb, and not having to stir the gearbox to keep up with traffic. If somebody offers you a number instead of a description of how the car will feel, treat it carefully, because the number is the easy part to say and the difficult part to stand behind.

Call 07773 694570Whether it is worth doing on an older car
A fair number of the vehicles we get asked about have some age and mileage behind them, and that is not automatically a problem. A well looked after engine with a hundred and something thousand on it will often take a sensible map perfectly happily. Condition matters far more than the figure on the dash, which is why the questions are about what has been done to it, what it has been drinking and how it has been behaving over the last few months.
Where the answer turns into no is when something is already wrong. A slipping clutch, a split boost hose, a service that keeps getting put off, a stored fault ignored since spring. Adding torque to any of those brings the failure forward, and it never picks a helpful moment. Turning work down is a cheaper outcome for you than finding the weak point at seventy, so the awkward questions get asked before a date is agreed rather than after we arrive.
Stapleton, and how we get to you
Barwell is about ten miles north west of the workshop on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, which is a comfortable run and easy to fit into a day without much notice. The work happens at the vehicle, so a driveway is ideal and a quiet street is usually fine. Allow an hour to an hour and a half, most of which is the reading, the road work and the checking afterwards rather than the writing itself.
Stapleton is covered by this page as well. If you are closer to one of the neighbouring places, several have pages of their own: Earl Shilton is a mile and a half away, Hinckley around two, with Burbage and Stoke Golding both under three. Ring with the make, model, year and engine and you will get an opinion on whether it is worth doing before anybody commits to a date.
Remapping in Barwell: your questions answered
How far is Barwell from your workshop?
Just under ten miles, north west of us. The workshop is on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, but the normal arrangement is that we drive to the vehicle rather than the other way round. Hinckley is two miles from you and Nuneaton under six, so this is well inside the area covered week in week out, and timing is usually easy to sort out.
Will I feel anything on a two mile run into Hinckley?
You should, because short local running lives in the low and middle of the rev range and that is precisely the part being reshaped. Pulling out of a side road, getting up to speed without the engine sounding busy, holding a gear where you would normally drop one. What you will not feel on a trip that length is anything happening at the top of the rev band, because you never get there.
My car is fifteen years old with high mileage. Am I wasting my time?
Not necessarily. Age and mileage matter far less than condition. An engine that has been serviced properly and is not showing any symptoms can take a sensible map without drama. One that is smoking, misfiring, using oil or storing codes is a different matter, and in that case the money is better spent on the underlying fault first. Describe it honestly on the phone and you will get an honest answer.
Do you work at my house or do I bring it to you?
At your house, normally. A driveway is the easiest place, and a quiet residential street in Barwell is usually workable too. All that is needed is somewhere the vehicle can sit with the engine able to run and the doors able to open. Bringing it down to Lutterworth is an option if that suits you better, and nothing about the job itself changes either way.
The DPF light is on. Will a map clear it?
No. Software does not empty a filter, and anyone suggesting otherwise is selling rather than diagnosing. A loaded filter needs the cause identified with live data, then a proper clean and a forced regeneration, with the numbers checked afterwards to prove it worked. We never remove, blank or emulate a DPF, an EGR or an AdBlue system, whatever the vehicle is used for.
Can the car be put back to how it was?
Yes, and it takes very little time. The factory file is copied off and kept before anything is altered, so the vehicle can be returned to the calibration it was delivered with. People ask for that at sale time, at the end of a lease, or before a dealer looks at something. There is no awkwardness in asking, and nothing extra to arrange.
Do I need to tell my insurer about it?
Yes. A remap counts as a modification and belongs on the policy in the same way alloy wheels or a tow bar would. Most insurers treat it as routine once they are told, and the call takes a couple of minutes. The only time it causes real trouble is when nobody mentioned it and it surfaces while a claim is being assessed.
Do you cover Stapleton and the places just outside Barwell?
Stapleton is covered by this page, yes. Earl Shilton, Hinckley, Burbage and Stoke Golding are all within three miles and have pages of their own, so use whichever is closest to you. In practice it makes no difference to how the visit is arranged, because everything within a few minutes of Barwell is the same trip out for us.
Does it matter whether the car is petrol or diesel?
It changes what is realistic. Turbocharged petrols generally respond well and there is usually something worth having. Naturally aspirated petrols have much less margin sitting in the software, and on some of them the honest answer is that the gain would not justify the spend. Diesels tend to give their improvement as low down pull. Tell us the exact engine and you will be told which bracket yours is in.
What should I have ready before I ring?
Make, model, year and engine size to begin with, then roughly what the car does in a typical week and what you want from it. Mention any warning lights, recent garage work, or anything that has felt wrong. Battery health is worth a thought as well, because an ECU needs steady voltage throughout a write and a tired battery is the usual reason a job has to stop.

Highly recommend!! I recently had my VW Caddy remapped with Mercia Remaps. I'd converted the back into a camper and put a Tentbox on the roof, the added weight had really affected the performance and fuel consumption. Mark from Mercia was an absolute legend during the whole process.
