ECU Remapping in Syston
This page covers two quite different sorts of driving. Syston itself is five miles from Leicester and a lot of its mileage is the run in and back out again. The villages to the east of it, Gaddesby, Hungarton, Barkby and the rest, are open country where nothing at all is close. The same car wants different things in those two worlds.
Two driving diets, one page
Five miles into Leicester is a short journey by any measure. It is over before the engine has properly settled, the oil is still coming up to temperature and the exhaust never gets near the heat it would like. Repeat that twice a day, five days a week, and you have a vehicle that has covered a respectable annual mileage without ever really stretching its legs.
Head the other way and it inverts. Out towards Gaddesby, Great Dalby, Burrough on the Hill, Cold Newton and Hungarton there is nothing within a short hop, so every journey is a proper run on open road. The engine gets hot and stays hot, the turbo does real work, and the vehicle spends its time in the part of the rev range it was designed around.
Those two patterns need different things from a map and they fail in different ways when something goes wrong. It is the first question we ask anybody ringing from this area, because the answer changes the advice more than the make of the car does. Barkby, Beeby, Barsby, Ashby Folville, Brooksby, Asfordby, Frisby on the Wreake, East Goscote and John O Gaunt all come under this page too.
The short run into Leicester, and what it costs a diesel
If your vehicle mostly does the city run, the thing most likely to catch you out is the particulate filter. It collects soot as a matter of course and clears it by burning it off, which needs heat held for a sustained stretch rather than briefly touched. A five mile trip does not provide that, and a regeneration that begins as you approach home gets abandoned the moment you switch off.
The symptoms follow a familiar sequence. A filter that never reads properly clear, fuel finding its way into the oil, a car that feels slightly flat, then a light, then limp mode at the least helpful moment. If that is where you are, the answer is diagnostics rather than tuning, and we read live data rather than just the stored code. Our DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Leicester page goes through what that involves.
What we will not do is take the filter out or write software that pretends it is still there. Removal is an MOT failure and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, and the same applies to blanking or emulating EGR and AdBlue. We diagnose, clean, force regenerate and repair. That is a less exciting sentence than the alternative, and it is the one that keeps your vehicle legal.

For anybody whose driving is mostly out east, the filter is rarely the issue, because that mileage keeps it clear as a matter of course. What people want out there is response in the middle of the rev range: getting out of a junction onto a fast road without waiting for the turbo to catch up, holding a gear up a rise, overtaking something slow without a long planned approach. That is the brief we write to.
The economy case is also stronger out there, because savings come from settled running rather than from constant stopping and starting. If you cover consistent miles on open roads every week, a reduction in fuel use repeats itself at the same rate without you thinking about it. If you do four short cold trips a day, it will not, and we would rather tell you that than take the booking. There is more on economy remapping in Leicester.
Whichever half you are in, the process does not change. The original calibration is read and saved, the engine is logged on the road, fuelling, boost and timing are adjusted for your vehicle and your use of it, and it is logged again afterwards. What changes is what the map is biased towards, and that is a decision made from what you tell us rather than from the badge on the front.
Getting to you, and what it costs
Syston is about seventeen and a half miles north of the workshop in Lutterworth, which is a routine run for us rather than anything special. We come to the vehicle and do the whole job there: a driveway, a quiet street, a yard or a work car park where the site is happy about it. All it needs is space to sit with the engine able to run and room to open a door and work.
You are in dense company here, which helps. Thurmaston is under two miles away, Sileby around two and a half, Rothley just under three and Mountsorrel a little over three, all covered in their own right. Loughborough is about seven miles and Leicester five, so this is one part of the area we are in and out of often and can usually be flexible about timing.
Reckon on an hour to ninety minutes at the vehicle. Car remaps start from £129, with vans and commercial vehicles quoted per vehicle because the work genuinely differs. Ring or send the details over with the make, model, year, engine and what the vehicle does in a normal week, and you will get a straight answer about whether it is worth doing before you commit to anything.
Remapping in Syston: your questions answered
Do you cover the villages east of Syston as well as the town?
Yes, and it is a wide spread. Gaddesby, Hungarton, Barkby, Beeby, Barsby, Ashby Folville, Brooksby, Great Dalby, Burrough on the Hill, Cold Newton, Asfordby, Frisby on the Wreake, East Goscote and John O Gaunt all come under this page. Thurmaston, Sileby, Rothley and Mountsorrel are close by and covered separately. Ring whichever you are nearest to, it makes no difference.
Most of my driving is the five miles into Leicester. Is that a problem?
It is the hardest use case for a diesel, yes. The engine barely reaches proper temperature before you park, and a particulate filter needs sustained heat to clear itself. It does not mean a diesel was the wrong choice, but it does mean the vehicle wants a longer settled run occasionally, and that when a light appears the driving pattern is often part of the cause.
I do country miles all week. Will I notice a map?
You are the better candidate of the two, and what you will notice is the middle of the rev range. Pulling out of a village junction onto a fast road, holding a gear on a rise rather than shuffling between two, getting past something slow without a long approach. That is where the change lands. The very top of the rev band is not where the useful work happens.
Will it save me fuel?
It can, if your mileage is consistent and settled and you do not spend the extra torque on driving harder. Steady weekly miles on open roads are the best case, because the saving repeats. Short cold trips around town are the worst, because the engine never settles. We will not give you a percentage before seeing the vehicle, because any figure quoted blind is a guess.
Do you remove diesel particulate filters?
No, and we will not write software pretending a removed one is still fitted. Removal is an MOT failure and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road. What we do is diagnose the cause with live data, clean the filter, run a forced regeneration and repair whatever is actually at fault. If a filter is beyond cleaning we will tell you it needs replacing instead.
Can the diagnostics be done at my house?
A good deal of it, yes. Reading live data, assessing the filter and running a forced regeneration can all happen at the vehicle. If the filter has to come off for a deep clean, or the fault turns out to be an injector or a sensor that needs different work, we will tell you before we begin rather than part way through the visit.
What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2?
Stage 1 is written for a vehicle with no hardware changes and works within the margin the manufacturer left in the software, which is what nearly everybody here actually wants. Stage 2 assumes intake and exhaust work has already been done. Putting a Stage 2 file on a standard car is selling you something the vehicle cannot use, so we will not do it.
How far are you from Syston?
About seventeen and a half miles south, so it is a routine journey rather than a special trip. Leicester is five miles from you and Loughborough around seven, which means we are in and out of this area regularly and can usually be reasonably flexible about when. The workshop is on Rugby Road in Lutterworth if you would rather come to us.
Does it need declaring to my insurer?
Yes. It is a modification and it should go on the policy, the same as any other change to the vehicle. Most insurers treat it as routine once they are told. The problem only ever appears when nobody mentioned it and it surfaces during a claim, at which point you have far less room to have a sensible conversation about it.
What does it cost and how do I book?
Car remaps start from £129, and vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle because the work involved is genuinely different. Call or message 07773 694570 with the make, model, year and engine, roughly where you are and what the vehicle does in a week. If we think a map is a poor use of your money on that car, we will say so.
