DPF Cleaning, Diagnostics and Forced Regeneration in Coventry
Most Coventry mileage is short, interrupted and slow, and that is exactly the pattern a diesel particulate filter copes with worst. We find out why yours is loading faster than it can burn off, clean it properly and regenerate it, instead of clearing the light and handing the same problem back to you.
Why ring road mileage is hard on a filter
The filter under a modern diesel collects soot and then burns it off in a regeneration, and a regeneration needs the exhaust genuinely hot and held there for a sustained stretch. Inside the ring road you rarely get that. You are at thirty, then at a set of lights, then at a junction, then parked. The engine has only just come up to temperature by the time the trip is over, and the soot already sitting in the filter has not been touched.
Abandoned regenerations are the other half of the story. When the car decides to run one and you switch off before it finishes, the cycle is dropped and started again later from a worse position. On a commute of five or six miles each way that happens over and over, and the calculated soot load only ever travels in one direction. By the time a warning appears on the dash you are near the end of a long process rather than at the start of one.
So the first thing we ask is what the vehicle does in a week. If it lives around Foleshill and Earlsdon doing short runs that never put heat into the exhaust, the driving is part of the cause and the repair has to deal with that as well as the filter. If it is out on the A45 and up to the M6 at junction two every morning and still loading, the mileage cannot be blamed, and something ahead of the filter is making more soot than the vehicle can clear. That narrows it to injectors, turbo condition, EGR behaviour or a sensor feeding the ECU a wrong picture.
What we read before anyone touches the filter
Pulling fault codes on its own tells you very little. We read live data at the vehicle: pressure differential across the filter, the soot figure and the ash figure the ECU is calculating separately, exhaust gas temperatures, and the regeneration history, meaning how many the vehicle has attempted and how many it has actually completed.
Those numbers split the job into different jobs. A vehicle that never attempts a regeneration is usually being stopped by a sensor or by conditions it is never given. One that attempts and abandons is a different fault again. One that completes and still shows a high pressure differential afterwards is telling you the filter is at the end of its useful life. You can read more about the method on our DPF cleaning and diagnostics page.
Once we know which of those we are dealing with, we clean the filter, run a forced regeneration where the load is within a range the vehicle can safely clear, and then confirm with live data that the figures have genuinely come back down rather than assuming they have. If the numbers say the filter is finished rather than dirty, you get told that instead of being charged for a clean nobody expects to hold.

Call 07773 694570The line we do not cross
We do not remove diesel particulate filters, and we do not blank, delete or emulate EGR or AdBlue systems. Removing or defeating emissions equipment on a road going vehicle is an MOT failure, the vehicle is unlawful to use on the road afterwards, and it can affect your insurance. If that is what you are ringing for, we will tell you on the phone rather than waste an afternoon of your time.
Coventry has been building vehicles for well over a century and still does, so there is usually no need to explain what the equipment is there for. Plenty of the people who ring us have worked in or around the trade themselves, which keeps the conversation short. A filter that has been taken off is also something you have to declare when you sell the vehicle, and a buyer in this city is more likely than most to ask the question. We diagnose these systems, we repair them, and we get them working the way they were designed to.
Where the work happens in Coventry
Coventry is about thirteen miles from the workshop on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, which is a straightforward run either way. Most of this work can be done at the vehicle: the diagnostics, the live data, the cleaning and the forced regeneration. A driveway, a work car park or a unit on an industrial estate is fine. A permit only terrace street is harder, so tell us where it will be parked when you ring.
If the diagnosis points at something that genuinely needs a workshop, or the filter has to come off for a deeper clean, we will say so before we start rather than halfway through. You are also welcome to bring the vehicle to Lutterworth. Either way, ring first and describe the symptoms, because that conversation usually narrows things down a long way. If a mobile visit suits you better, that is the default anyway.
DPF Cleaning and Diagnostics in Coventry: your questions answered
The light came on while I was going round the ring road. Can I keep driving?
A steady warning usually means the filter is loading and the vehicle wants conditions it has not been given. A flashing warning, a limp mode, or a DPF warning with other lights alongside it means stop and get it looked at. Carrying on in that state is how a filter that could have been cleaned turns into one that has to be replaced.
Would a run out along the A45 or up the M6 clear it?
It is worth trying if the light has only just appeared and the car is otherwise driving normally. Twenty minutes or so at a sustained speed, in a slightly lower gear than you would normally hold, gives the exhaust its best chance of reaching and keeping temperature. If the light is still there afterwards, the filter is too loaded to clear itself or something else is stopping the cycle.
Will you take the filter out and code it out of the software?
No. That is an MOT failure and it makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, and we will not write software that pretends a missing filter is still fitted. We clean, diagnose, repair and force regenerate instead. If removal is what you want, we are the wrong people and we would rather say that straight away.
I only do city miles. Was a diesel the wrong choice for me?
It is the hardest use case for one, but it does not automatically make it wrong. It does mean the filter needs conditions it will not get on its own, so either the car gets a proper run occasionally, or the loading gets managed deliberately, or a petrol suits your mileage better next time. We will give you the honest version rather than the polite one.
How can you tell soot from ash?
The ECU calculates them separately and they behave differently. Soot is combustible and a regeneration will burn it away. Ash is the residue left behind and it does not burn off at all. A filter carrying a high ash figure, or one where the pressure differential stays high after a successful regeneration, is worn out rather than dirty, and cleaning it again will not change that.
Can you do it on my street, or does it have to go into a workshop?
Usually at the vehicle. Diagnostics, live data and a forced regeneration all happen where it is parked, so a driveway, a works car park or a yard is fine. A narrow permit street in the city centre is more difficult and it is worth mentioning when you ring. If the filter has to come off for a deep clean we will tell you before we start.
What is a forced regeneration and how long does it take?
It is a regeneration commanded through the ECU with the vehicle stationary, rather than waiting for the car to choose to run one. It raises exhaust temperature deliberately to burn away trapped soot. It takes roughly half an hour to three quarters of an hour once it begins, and it is only appropriate when the load is inside a range the vehicle can clear safely.
A garage told me it is the EGR valve. Do you clean those or replace them?
It depends what is wrong with it. A valve that is sticking because of carbon can often be freed and cleaned and then works properly again. One that has failed electrically, or where the seat itself is damaged, needs replacing and cleaning will only buy you a few weeks. We would rather establish which it is than guess and charge you twice.
My AdBlue warning is counting down the miles. Can you sort that?
Often, yes. The common faults are crystallisation in the injector or lines, a pump or heater problem, or a level or quality sensor giving the ECU a reading it does not believe. Those are repairable. What we will not do is delete or emulate the system to make the countdown disappear, because that leaves the vehicle unlawful to use on the road.
Does a blocked filter fail an MOT?
It can. Diesels are checked for visible smoke and for evidence that the filter is present and intact, and a heavily loaded or faulty filter can push the vehicle outside the limit. A missing one is a straightforward failure. If you have a test coming up it is worth dealing with the warning before the test rather than after it.
If you remap it afterwards, will that stop it happening again?
Not on its own, and anyone telling you a map unblocks a filter is selling you something. Once the underlying fault is repaired, a properly written map can stop the engine making more soot than it needs to, which helps. That is a second step that only makes sense after the first one, and we will tell you if your case does not need it.
What does DPF work cost?
It depends entirely on what the diagnostics find, so we do not quote a flat figure. A straightforward diagnosis followed by a forced regeneration is a very different job from an injector fault that has to be put right first, or a filter that needs to come off. Describe the symptoms on the phone and we will give you a realistic idea before anyone commits to anything.
