Van and Commercial Vehicle Remapping in Coventry
There are two kinds of working vehicle in Coventry and they want opposite things. One does multi drop inside the ring road and never sees a motorway. The other is out on the A45 and up the M6 all week. The same file will not suit both, so we write for the one in front of us.
Two Coventry vans, two very different jobs
A multi drop van working the city is starting, stopping and pulling away from rest all day long. It carries weight for part of the round and almost nothing by the end of it, the engine rarely gets properly hot, and most of the fuel goes into getting a loaded vehicle moving again from a standstill.
A van that is out to Ansty, up the M6 at junction two and off to a site fifty miles away has the opposite life. Long steady stretches at a fixed speed, a hot exhaust, and a turbo working consistently rather than in bursts. That vehicle is barely doing the same job as the first one even if it is the same model.
Ask which of those two yours is before deciding what the map should do, and you get somewhere useful very quickly. Ask what power figure is available and you get a number that means very little to either driver, because neither of them is ever going to be at full throttle near the red line with a load on board. The right question is where in the range the vehicle spends its working day, and what it is carrying while it is there.
What a working driver actually notices
Almost nobody rings us about a van wanting a peak figure. They want it to pull properly when it is loaded, and they want it to cost less to run across a week. On most commercial diesels those two aims point at exactly the same change, which is usable torque arriving lower down the range so the engine is working in its comfortable band instead of being revved to get a heavy vehicle moving.
The practical effect is fewer gear changes and less clutch abuse pulling away from a junction with weight in the back, less right foot needed to hold speed on the A45, and a vehicle that feels capable rather than strained when it is towing. If you tow regularly, say so when you ring, because that pushes the emphasis further down the range again.
Tell us the van, the round and the weightThat is enough for us to say honestly what a map would change for the way you use it in Coventry, and what it would not.

Private hire and other vehicles doing heavy urban mileage clock up hours rather than motorway miles, and that combination is hard on emissions equipment. Plenty of idling, a great deal of low speed running and very little sustained heat in the exhaust is the exact recipe for a filter that struggles to clear itself and an EGR valve that gums up sooner than the service schedule expects.
If that describes your vehicle, the map is not the first conversation to have. Get the DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Coventry side of it sorted out first, then look at the calibration afterwards. Mapping a vehicle with a partly blocked filter is asking an already struggling system to work harder, which does nobody any favours and tends to produce a phone call a month later.
When we will tell you not to bother
A remap is not a repair and we will not pretend otherwise. If your van is flat because a turbo is tired, an injector is leaking or the EGR is stuck, a file will hide it for a while and then find the weak point at the worst possible moment. We would rather have that conversation on the phone than take a booking we know will come back.
Very low weekly mileage is the other case where the answer is often no. If the vehicle barely moves, a fuel focused map will take a long time to justify itself, and you may well be better off spending the money elsewhere. Have a look at economy remapping in Coventry if the running cost is the main reason you are asking.
On price, car remaps start from £129, and vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle. That is not evasiveness. The work involved in a small car derived van and the work involved in a three litre chassis cab are genuinely different jobs, and quoting one figure for both would mean overcharging half the people who ring. Tell us the exact vehicle and you will have a number before you commit to anything at all.
Van and Commercial Remapping in Coventry: your questions answered
Can you do it at my yard rather than me losing a day?
That is the point of a mobile service. We come to the yard, the unit or the site, do the whole job at the vehicle and road test it before handing the keys back. For an owner driver that usually means a lunch break instead of a day off the road, which is often the deciding factor.
Which vans do you work on?
The usual working vehicles you see across Coventry: Transit and Transit Custom, Transporter and Crafter, Sprinter and Vito, Vivaro and Movano, Trafic and Master, Dispatch, Expert, Relay and Boxer, Ducato, plus pickups and car derived vans. If yours is not on that list it is still worth asking, because the base engine is often shared with something that is.
Will it pull better when the van is full?
That is normally the change drivers notice most. Bringing usable torque lower down means the van moves a load without being revved to get going, which shows up every time you pull out of a junction on a round. It matters more on a loaded vehicle than on an empty one, so tell us what it typically carries.
Will it save me fuel doing multi drop in the city?
Less than it would on a steady motorway round, and it would be dishonest to suggest otherwise. Stop start work is where fuel disappears into getting a heavy vehicle moving repeatedly, and a map has limited influence over that. There is usually still a gain, it is just smaller, and we would rather you knew that before booking.
Is a high mileage van safe to map?
A healthy one with a proper service history, usually yes. A tired one, no, and a map will expose whatever is already marginal. We look at the vehicle first, and if something needs sorting we say so. Mapping over a known weakness is how a van ends up off the road at the exact moment it was needed.
Can it be put back to standard for a lease return?
Yes. The factory calibration is saved before anything is written, so the vehicle goes back exactly as it came. People ask for this most often when a lease is ending, when they are selling, or when a dealer wants it standard before a warranty discussion.
Do I need to tell the insurer on a commercial vehicle?
Yes, exactly as you would on a car. A remap is a modification and it should be declared. On a working vehicle the stakes are higher, because an undeclared modification discovered at claim time on a van that earns your living is a genuinely expensive problem.
What about a van on finance or under warranty?
Say so at the enquiry stage and we will give you a straight answer, which is sometimes that you should wait. It is a much easier conversation before the work is done than afterwards, and being able to return the vehicle to standard does not remove the need to think about it first.
How long is the van off the road?
Usually an hour to ninety minutes at your premises. Some commercial ECUs take longer to read and write than the equivalent car unit, and we will tell you if yours is one of those when you ring, so you can plan the round around it rather than guessing.
Does towing change the map you write?
It changes the emphasis rather than the approach. Towing regularly means the vehicle spends much of its time under sustained load at moderate revs, so the file is biased towards usable pull in that band rather than anything higher up. Mention it when you book and mention roughly what weight you pull.
Do you work on tippers, lutons and crew cabs?
Yes, because in most cases the same engine sits underneath a different body. Tell us the base vehicle and the engine rather than the body style and we can tell you what is possible. Heavier bodies make low down pull more important, not less.
What does it cost for a van?
Car remaps start from £129, and vans and commercial vehicles are quoted per vehicle because the job genuinely varies. Give us the exact model, engine and year and you will have a figure before you commit to anything. We do not quote a range and then change it when we turn up.
