How a mobile visit works in a city

Where we can work, and where we cannot
A driveway is ideal. A works car park, a yard, a unit on an industrial estate at Binley or Whitley, or a quiet space on a residential street all work fine. What we need is for the vehicle to sit still for the visit with the engine able to run, and enough room to be at the car safely without standing in a live lane.
The two places that are genuinely awkward are a multi storey and a busy permit street in the centre where there is nowhere for either of us to stop. If that is your only option, say so when you ring rather than on the morning, and we will work something out. Sometimes that means meeting somewhere sensible nearby, sometimes it means picking a quieter time of day, and occasionally it means the workshop is simply the easier answer for your situation.

We log the engine on the road before and after the file goes on, which means we need somewhere the vehicle can actually be driven at a sensible speed and held there for a while. Inside the ring road at half past five that is not realistic, and no amount of patience makes it so. Timing therefore matters more in a city this size than it does in a smaller town where the next quiet road is two minutes away.
In practice it is easily solved. The A45 and the roads heading out towards the M6 give us everything we need, and booking either side of the worst of the traffic is usually all it takes. What to have ready
A battery in decent health, keys, and somewhere the vehicle can stay put. Writing to an ECU needs stable voltage, and a tired battery is the single most common reason a job has to be paused. If you already know yours struggles on a cold morning, tell us when you book and we will bring support for it.
You do not need a power supply, a garage, a ramp or anything else from your side, and there is nothing to buy in advance. Everything else arrives with us. Do I need to be there the whole time?
Not for all of it, but we do need access to the vehicle and the keys, and somebody available at the start and the end. Plenty of people leave us to it at a works car park and come back out when we ring. What we cannot do is take the keys and disappear for the afternoon, because the road test is part of the visit.
Can you come to my workplace in the city centre?
Usually, as long as there is somewhere we can safely work at the vehicle and whoever runs the site is happy with somebody working on a car in their car park. It is worth asking them first. If the answer is no, a home visit at the weekend or an evening is normally easier than trying to make an awkward site work.
Is a mobile remap actually as good as one done in a workshop?
It is the identical job with the identical equipment and the same file written the same way. The car does not perform differently because of where it is parked. The only exceptions are ECUs that have to be opened and read on the bench, and we check that against your vehicle before booking so nobody is surprised on the day.
How long will you need the car for?
Normally an hour to ninety minutes, including reading and saving the original file, writing and loading the new one, and driving it afterwards. Some vehicles take longer because of how the ECU is accessed. We will give you a realistic window when you book rather than an optimistic one.
What happens if it rains?
Very little. Most of the work is done from inside the vehicle through the diagnostic port, so weather is rarely the deciding factor. If conditions are genuinely unsafe to work in we will rearrange rather than rush, because hurrying an ECU write to get out of the rain is a bad trade.
My battery is not brilliant. Is that a problem?
Tell us when you book. An ECU needs stable voltage while it is being written to, and a weak battery is the most common reason a job stops part way through. If you mention it in advance we bring support for it and it becomes a non event. If we find out on the day, it might mean rebooking.
Do you cover all of Coventry or just certain areas?
All of it. Earlsdon, Allesley, Coundon, Longford, Walsgrave, Tile Hill, Canley, Binley and everywhere in between. The city sits about thirteen miles from the Lutterworth workshop and the run in is straightforward from any direction, so there is no part of Coventry that is awkward enough for us to charge differently or turn down.
Can you come out early or late to avoid traffic?
Often, yes. Because the road test needs roads that are actually moving, arranging either side of the rush is usually better for both of us. Say what suits you when you ring and we will try to match it rather than giving you a fixed slot and leaving you to work around it.
What if something goes wrong while you are on my drive?
Your original calibration is read and saved before anything is written, so the vehicle can be returned to exactly how it was, on the spot, without going anywhere. That is the reason the original file gets stored first on every job rather than only on the complicated ones.
Can you do more than one vehicle in the same visit?
Yes, and if they are at the same address it is far more efficient to do them together than to book separate visits. Tell us what they are when you ring, because the time needed depends on the vehicles rather than the number of them.
Do you still do workshop appointments?
Yes. The workshop is at Rugby Road in Lutterworth if you would rather bring it in, and from most of Coventry it is a short run. Some people prefer it, particularly if there is nowhere sensible to work on the car at home.
