Mobile ECU Remapping in Leamington Spa
Leamington has a well established games and technology cluster, which means a lot of people here are at a desk during exactly the hours a workshop is open, and a lot of cars spend the whole day sitting in a car park doing nothing useful. That is an easier problem to solve than booking a day off.
How the visit runs, start to finish
You give us the vehicle, the registration and where it will be. We arrive with all of it: interface, laptop, logging equipment and voltage support. The first thing that happens is that the original calibration comes off the ECU and is saved, before anything at all is written. After that it is writing the map for that specific car, loading it, and driving it.
Allow about an hour to ninety minutes for a typical job, more on some vehicles. The road test is part of the work rather than a courtesy at the end, and it happens before the keys come back to you. If the logs show something is not behaving the way it should, it is adjusted there and then rather than left for you to notice next week.
None of the result depends on the postcode. It is the same equipment and the same file that would be used at the workshop in Lutterworth, and the car has no idea where it is parked. The only jobs that genuinely need a bench are the ECUs that have to be opened and read directly, and if yours is one of those you will know when you ring, not when we turn up.
Parking, which in this town is the real variable
Most of the places we cover are driveways and yards. Leamington is more awkward than that. A lot of the housing near the centre is Regency terrace with residents' permit parking and no off street space at all, and a car wedged between two others on a permit bay is not somewhere anyone can work properly or safely.
It is almost always solvable. An office car park during the working day is close to ideal, and the business parks on the edge of town are quick for us to reach off junction 13 or 14. So is a long stay car park, a relative's driveway, or simply moving the car to a quieter side street for the hour. Tell us honestly what the parking looks like when you book and we will sort it out on the phone rather than on the day.
What we actually need is modest: room to open a door and sit with the car, ground that is not a live traffic lane, and somewhere the engine can idle and then be driven for a road test afterwards. It does not have to be flat, it does not have to be covered and it does not have to be your own property, as long as whoever owns it is content with the work happening there. That is the entire list, and most people overestimate it considerably.
Car sitting in a car park all day anyway? That is usually the easiest hour we will ever book. Tell us where it is parked and we will tell you if it works.

This is the one thing that genuinely stops a job part way, and it matters more on the sort of cars parked round here than on an older van. Writing to an ECU needs stable voltage for the entire duration of the write. A current car with stop start, an absorbent glass mat battery, heated everything and a dozen control modules awake is a heavier electrical load than most owners expect, and a battery that starts the car happily on a mild morning can still sag under sustained draw.
We bring support for that, so in practice it is rarely a problem. Even so, if you already know the battery is several years old, or the car has been standing while you worked from home, or stop start has quietly given up, mention it when you book. Stop start switching itself off is very often the car telling you the battery is past its best.
Beyond the battery there is genuinely nothing for you to prepare. You do not need to wash the car, warm it up, clear any codes, top anything up or find paperwork. The equipment, the laptop, the logging kit and the voltage support all arrive with us, and the original file is read off your car rather than sourced from anywhere else, so there is nothing you have to supply in advance either. Keys and a parking space is the whole of it.
When the workshop is the better answer
Twenty miles puts Leamington comfortably inside the area we work, and the M40 at junctions 13 and 14 makes it a quick run, so a mobile visit is normally the sensible default here rather than the exception. The time it saves is yours rather than ours, which is the whole point of doing it this way. Nobody has ever rung up wanting to spend a day off sitting in a waiting room, and for most of the jobs we do there is no technical reason they should have to.
There are cases where coming to Lutterworth is better. A car that needs the ECU out and on a bench, a diagnosis that wants a ramp under it, or a job where the phone call has already suggested something needs investigating before any mapping is sensible. In those situations we say so up front rather than discovering it on your driveway with the car in pieces. It is also the right answer if the parking at your end is genuinely hopeless and moving the car somewhere workable is more hassle than the drive over would be. If you are weighing up something specific, tell us what it is and we will give you a view.
The conversation is the same either way. Tell us the vehicle, what it does, where it will be and roughly when suits you, and we will tell you which option makes more sense. If you would like the background on how the mapping itself is done, it is set out on the ECU remapping in Leamington Spa page.
Mobile ECU Remapping in Leamington Spa: your questions answered
Do you actually come out to Leamington?
Yes, regularly. It is about twenty miles from the Lutterworth workshop and the run down to junction 13 or 14 is straightforward, so it sits comfortably within the area we cover rather than at the edge of it. Give us the registration and roughly where the car will be and we will confirm a time on the phone.
Can you do it while I am at work?
That is the most common way we do it here. The car sits in the office car park all day regardless, so using an hour or so of that is far less disruptive than booking time off. We only need you at the start and the end, and in between you can be at your desk. Check with whoever runs the site first.
I live in a terrace with permit parking. Is that going to be a problem?
It is the most common complication in this town and it is usually solvable. A permit bay hemmed in on both sides is not workable, but a long stay car park, a nearby office car park or a quieter side street for the hour all are. Tell us what the parking is really like when you book rather than hoping on the day, and we will plan around it.
Is a mobile remap as good as one done in a workshop?
It is the same equipment, the same reading and writing process and the same file. The car cannot tell where it is standing. The genuine exceptions are ECUs that have to be removed and read on a bench, and diagnoses that need a ramp. Both are identified during the phone call rather than on the day, so you know which you are getting before anyone books anything.
How long do you need the car for?
Typically an hour to ninety minutes, longer on some vehicles depending on how the ECU has to be accessed. That covers reading and saving the original file, writing and loading the map, and the road test. If there is something unusual about your car that will take longer, we will tell you when you ring so you can plan around it.
Do you need power or anything else from me?
No. The equipment, the laptop and the voltage support all come with us. What we need is somewhere safe for the car to stand, room to work at it and the ability to take it out for a road test afterwards. Keys, obviously, and if there is a barrier or a permit involved at your workplace, a heads up about that.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Most of the work is done sitting in the car through the diagnostic port, so rain is rarely the issue people expect. What does matter is standing water, ice or anything that makes the road test less than sensible. If conditions genuinely make the job unsafe we will move it rather than rush through it, and we will tell you that early rather than at your gate.
What if something goes wrong while you are on my driveway?
The original calibration is read and saved before anything is written, so the car can be returned to its factory file on the spot. That is the specific reason it is done in that order and it is not negotiable. Stable voltage is the other safeguard, which is why the battery question gets asked before we come out rather than after.
Will you road test it before you leave?
Always. Logging the engine on the road afterwards is how we confirm the map is doing what it was written to do and that nothing is sitting outside sensible limits. A map that has not been driven is a map nobody has checked, and handing the keys back at that point would be guessing.
Can you come to one of the business parks on the edge of town?
Yes, and those are among the easiest places for us to work, because there is usually space and the access off the motorway is quick. The only thing to confirm is that whoever manages the site is content with the work happening there. Most are, but it is worth asking before you book rather than after we arrive.
My stop start has stopped working. Does that affect anything?
It is worth mentioning, because stop start disabling itself is frequently the car reporting that the battery is no longer holding up under load. Writing to an ECU needs steady voltage throughout, so a tired battery is the single most common reason a job has to be paused. We bring support for it, but knowing in advance means we arrive prepared rather than improvising.
How do I book and what do you need to know?
Call or message 07773 694570 with the registration, the year and engine if you know it, where the car will be and what you want the map to do for you. That last part matters more than people think, because a [performance focused map](/services/performance-remapping/leamington-spa/) and an economy biased one are different files written for different priorities.
