ECU Remapping in Stoke Golding

The most useful question we get from villages like Stoke Golding is not how much power. It is whether the car is worth mapping in the first place. Hinckley is under three miles away, Nuneaton under four, and a lot of the driving here is short. Sometimes the honest answer is no.

Which cars are worth it, and which are not

A turbocharged engine, petrol or diesel, usually has real margin left in its factory software, because the manufacturer had to write one calibration to survive fuel and climates we never see here. That margin is what a map uses, and it is why turbo cars respond so noticeably. A naturally aspirated engine has far less of it, and on some of those the improvement you would feel does not justify what you would pay for it.

Mileage matters too. Stoke Golding is under three miles from Hinckley and under four from Nuneaton, so a good number of local cars are doing short journeys where the engine barely warms through. There is still something worth having there, mostly in how willing the car feels low down, but the fuel saving argument largely evaporates because there are not enough miles for it to add up.

So the first conversation is about your car and your week, and it ends with a straight answer. We tell people not to bother reasonably often. It costs us a booking and saves you a few hundred pounds you would have spent wondering what happened, which is a trade we are comfortable with. Performance remapping in Hinckley explains what the work involves when it is worth doing.

Automatics and the gearbox half of the conversation

If your car is an automatic, the transmission software belongs in the same discussion rather than being raised afterwards as an extra. Adding torque and leaving the gearbox to work out what to do with it often produces a car that is quicker on paper and less pleasant to live with: hunting between gears, holding on too long, or shifting at moments you would not have chosen.

Done properly, the two are considered together, so shift points and how firmly the box changes suit the engine it is now attached to. That is far more noticeable in day to day driving than any headline figure, particularly on short local journeys where you are changing gear constantly. There is more detail on gearbox tuning in Hinckley.

It is not always necessary. Plenty of automatics are perfectly happy with the extra torque as they are, and we will say so rather than adding work for the sake of it. What matters is that the question gets asked before the map is written, not discovered afterwards when the car is not driving as you hoped.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across Stoke Golding and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

Twelve miles out, and the villages nearby

Stoke Golding is about twelve miles north west of the workshop in Lutterworth, which is a straightforward run and means timing is fairly flexible. We bring everything to the vehicle, so there is nothing to drop off and nothing to collect later. A driveway is ideal and a quiet village street is usually fine, as long as the car can sit with the engine able to run.

Dadlington, Higham on the Hill and Wykin are all covered by this page. Hinckley is under three miles away, Barwell a similar distance, and Market Bosworth a little under four, each with a page of its own. It is the same van and the same work whichever of those is closest to where you are parked.

Expect an hour to ninety minutes on site. Your original calibration is read and saved, the engine is logged on the road, the map is written and loaded for that specific car, and then it is logged again to check the change did what it was supposed to. Road testing is not an optional extra, it is the part that tells us whether the file was right.

Nothing permanent, and nothing unlawful

Because your factory file is kept before anything is written, the car can go back to exactly the state it was in. That comes up when people sell, when a lease ends, or when a dealer wants a vehicle standard before looking at a warranty claim. Knowing the decision can be undone tends to make it an easier one to take, and it takes very little time to reverse.

What cannot be undone is an MOT failure, which is why we do not remove particulate filters and will not write software that pretends a missing one is still fitted. Blanking or emulating EGR and AdBlue gets exactly the same answer. Those systems get diagnosed on live data, cleaned, force regenerated where that is the fix, and repaired so they do the job they were built to do.

The same honesty applies to mechanical faults. A map is not a repair, and a car that is flat because something is worn or leaking needs that dealing with first. Tell us about warning lights and recent work when you ring, and you will get a realistic view before anybody takes a booking.

Remapping in Stoke Golding: your questions answered

Is my car actually worth mapping?

That depends on the engine and on your mileage, and you will get a straight answer rather than a pitch. Turbocharged engines usually have genuine margin left in the factory software. Naturally aspirated ones have much less, and on a low mileage car the saving side of the argument barely exists. Tell us the exact engine and roughly what the week looks like and we will tell you which camp yours is in.

Mine is an automatic. Does the gearbox need doing as well?

Sometimes, and it is better asked before the map is written than discovered afterwards. Adding torque without considering the transmission can leave a car hunting between gears or holding on longer than you would like. Plenty of automatics cope perfectly well as they are, and where that is the case we will say so instead of adding work you do not need.

I only do short trips locally. Is there any point?

There can be, though not the point most adverts make. On short journeys the useful change is how willing the engine feels low down, so you are asking less of it in stop start driving. What largely disappears is the fuel saving argument, because there are not enough miles for small savings to accumulate. If someone promises you economy gains on a three mile commute, be suspicious.

How far away are you?

The workshop is on Rugby Road in Lutterworth, roughly twelve miles south east of Stoke Golding. That is an easy run, so there is reasonable flexibility about timing and we can often work around when the car is actually available. We come to the vehicle as standard, though you are welcome to bring it down to the workshop if that suits you better.

Do you work on petrol cars or only diesels?

Both. Turbocharged petrols respond well and make up a fair share of the work we do. Naturally aspirated petrols have far less headroom in their software, and on some of them the honest recommendation is to keep your money. Give us the engine when you ring and we will put yours in one category or the other before you commit to anything.

How long are you at the car?

Allow an hour and do not be surprised by ninety minutes. That includes reading and saving your original file, logging the engine on the road so we can see it under load, writing and loading the map, then logging again to confirm the result. Some vehicles take longer to read and write, and if yours is one of them you will be told at the booking stage.

Do I need to tell my insurance company?

Yes. It is a modification and should be declared in the same way as any other change to the car. Most insurers are perfectly relaxed about it once told. The only real risk is leaving it undeclared and having it come up during a claim, which turns a two minute phone call into a much more difficult conversation at the worst time.

Can it be put back to standard?

Yes, and quickly. Your original calibration is copied off the ECU and kept before anything is altered, so the vehicle can be returned to precisely the condition it was in beforehand. People ask for that when selling, when a lease is ending, or when a dealer wants the car standard before discussing a warranty claim. Ask about it before the work if it matters to you.

Will you delete the DPF, EGR or AdBlue?

No. Removing a particulate filter fails an MOT and leaves the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, and we will not write software that pretends a missing filter is still there. Blanking or emulating EGR and AdBlue gets the same answer. We diagnose those systems, clean them, run a forced regeneration where that is what is required, and repair them.

What should I tell you when I call?

The make, model, year and engine, whether it is a manual or an automatic, where in Stoke Golding, Dadlington, Higham on the Hill or Wykin the car sits, and what you want it to do differently. Mention any warning lights and recent work, and flag a tired battery if you know about one, because a write needs steady voltage from start to finish.
