ECU Remapping in Market Bosworth

A lot of what gets sold as remapping is a file bought in from somewhere else, flashed on because the engine code matched, with nobody driving the car afterwards to see what it did. That is not how we work. If you are ringing from Market Bosworth wanting to know whether it is even worth doing, that is the better conversation.

A bought in file and a written map are not the same thing

Two cars wearing the same badge and the same engine code can be in very different states. One has been serviced on time, the other has not. One has a turbo with plenty of life in it, the other is quietly passing oil. A file that was written for neither of them is a bet that yours is average, and the only way to find out whether that bet was right is to drive it.

What we do instead is read the original calibration off your ECU and save it, log the engine on the road so we can see how it is genuinely behaving, adjust fuelling, boost and timing for that vehicle and the way it gets used, then log it again afterwards. The second log is the part that separates a map from a gamble, because it shows whether the change did what it was meant to and whether anything is running outside sensible limits.

It takes about an hour to ninety minutes and it happens where the vehicle is parked. The original file stays saved either way, so the car can go back to factory calibration whenever you want it to. More on how the mobile side works is on our mobile ECU remapping page.

A small town with three bigger ones around it

Market Bosworth is small and the places people drive to are not. Hinckley is around six miles off, Nuneaton about seven and a half, Leicester a little over eleven. Almost nothing here is a walk, so the vehicle does a mixture: lanes and B roads at the start of every journey, then something faster and busier once you arrive. That combination is what any sensible map for a car round here has to be built around.

In practice it points at the middle of the rev range rather than the top. Getting out of a junction onto a fast road cleanly, holding a gear rather than shuffling between two on an incline, having enough in reserve to overtake something slow moving without planning it three corners ahead. None of that is a headline figure and all of it is what the driving here actually consists of. Performance remapping in Hinckley covers the same ground in more depth.

This page now takes in the villages around the town as well: Barlestone, Sutton Cheney, Cadeby, Carlton, Congerstone, Osbaston, Osbaston Hollow, Barton in the Beans, Bilstone, Bufton and Far Coton. Stoke Golding is under four miles away, with Ibstock, Desford and Upton all close by and covered in their own right.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across Market Bosworth and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

When the answer is no

We turn work down fairly regularly and it is worth knowing why before you ring. A naturally aspirated petrol has far less headroom in its software than a turbocharged engine, and on some of them the gain would not be worth what it costs you. A vehicle doing very little annual mileage will not recover the cost of an economy biased map in any sensible timeframe. Both of those are better said on the phone than afterwards.

The other no is health. A map is not a repair and it never has been. If a boost hose is splitting, an injector is leaking, the clutch is marginal or a service is overdue, adding torque will find that weakness sooner and it will not choose a convenient moment to do it. We ask about warning lights, history and how it has been running before agreeing to a date, and sometimes that is where the conversation stops.

And the flat no. We do not remove, blank or emulate diesel particulate filters, EGR valves or AdBlue systems. Removing a DPF is an MOT failure and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road. We diagnose those systems properly, clean and force regenerate where that is the answer, and repair what is genuinely at fault. If somebody has offered you the other thing cheaply, that is why it is cheap.

Fourteen miles, so an easy one for us

Market Bosworth sits roughly fourteen and a half miles north west of our workshop in Lutterworth, which makes it a comfortable run rather than an expedition. We bring everything to the vehicle: a driveway, a yard, a quiet street or a work car park with the site owner happy about it. All we need is somewhere it can sit with the engine able to run and enough room to open a door and work.

The one thing that genuinely stops a job is battery condition. Writing to an ECU needs stable voltage for the whole process, and a battery that starts the car perfectly well can still let go part way through. If yours is tired, or the vehicle has been standing for weeks, say so when you book and we will come prepared rather than discovering it on your drive.

Before any of that, ring or send the details across with the make, model, year and engine, what you want out of it and anything that is not quite right at the moment. You will get an honest view on whether a map suits your vehicle, and if the answer is that it does not, we will say so and neither of us will have wasted an afternoon.

Remapping in Market Bosworth: your questions answered

What makes a custom map different from a file off the shelf?

A bought in file assumes your vehicle is average for its engine code. Yours might not be. We read and save the original calibration, log the engine on the road to see how it is genuinely behaving, write the adjustments for that vehicle, then log again to confirm the result. The second log is the part most people never get, and it is the part that tells you whether anything worked.

How far is Market Bosworth from your workshop?

Roughly fourteen and a half miles north west, which makes it one of the more straightforward places on our list to reach. Hinckley is about six miles from you, Nuneaton seven and a half and Leicester eleven, so we are often out that way regardless. You are also welcome to bring the vehicle to Rugby Road in Lutterworth if that suits you better.

Are there vehicles you will not map?

Yes, several sorts. A naturally aspirated petrol often has too little margin in the software to justify the spend. A vehicle with an unresolved fault needs that sorting first. A car doing very small annual mileage will not repay an economy biased map. We would rather explain which of those applies to you on the phone than take a booking that was never going to be worth it.

Will you take a DPF off?

No. Removal is an MOT failure and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, and we will not write software that pretends a missing filter is still there. The same goes for EGR and AdBlue. Those systems get diagnosed, cleaned, force regenerated and repaired instead. If that is not what you are looking for, we are not the right people for the job.

Which villages does this page cover?

Barlestone, Sutton Cheney, Cadeby, Carlton, Congerstone, Osbaston, Osbaston Hollow, Barton in the Beans, Bilstone, Bufton and Far Coton. Stoke Golding, Ibstock, Desford and Upton are each within a few miles and have pages of their own. If you are somewhere between two of them, ring and we will sort out where you fall, because it makes no difference to the work.

Can you do it while the car is at work?

Often, yes. What you need is somewhere on the site the vehicle can sit and be driven out from, and whoever runs the car park being content with it. Ask them the day before rather than on the day, because a barrier or a permit system is much easier to arrange in advance. A multi storey is the awkward one, since the road work has to happen somewhere.

What happens if my battery is weak?

It is the single most common reason a job has to be stopped part way through. The ECU needs steady voltage for the whole write, and a battery that copes fine with starting the engine can still drop under a sustained load. If you already suspect yours, or the vehicle has been standing for weeks, tell us when you book and we will come prepared for it.

Is Stage 2 worth considering?

Only if you have already changed how the engine breathes, which usually means intake and exhaust work. Writing a Stage 2 file for an otherwise standard car is charging you for something the vehicle cannot use. If you are planning hardware, ring before you buy any of it, because the order you do things in matters more than most people expect.

Do I have to tell my insurance company?

Yes. It counts as a modification in exactly the same way as a suspension change or a set of wheels, and it should be declared. Most insurers are entirely unbothered once they know. The difficulty only ever arrives when it was never mentioned and then emerges during a claim, which is a bad time to be explaining anything to anyone.

Can it go back to standard later?

Yes, and quickly. The factory calibration is read off the ECU and stored before anything is written, so the vehicle can be returned to precisely the state it arrived in. People want that when they sell, when a lease goes back, or when a dealer would rather see everything standard. It is a short job and there is nothing awkward about asking for it.

Mark at Mercia Remaps was an absolute pleasure to deal with!! Had a Stage 1 tune/remap done to my Ford Ranger V6 Diesel 2025 and it's bloody fantastic.

I recently had a Stage 1 remap done by Mark and couldn’t be happier. He’s passionate about what he does and took the time to explain the process, what to expect, and gave me some recommendations for after the remap.
