ECU Remapping in Upton

Upton is a small place with two decent sized towns either side of it, Nuneaton about five miles one way and Hinckley a little over five the other. If you live out here you are used to driving to things. Having somebody drive to you instead, and map the car on your own roads, is what most people ring about.

A small place with a long list of neighbours

Upton itself is modest, but this page covers a broad scatter of the places around it: Atterton, Fenny Drayton, Little Twycross, Orton on the Hill, Pinwall, Ratcliffe Culey, Sheepy Magna, Sheepy Parva, Shenton, Sibson, Twycross, Wellsborough and Witherley. Most of those are small enough that nobody would ever build them a page of their own, which is precisely why they belong here rather than nowhere.

The nearest covered towns give you the shape of it. Stoke Golding is around two and a half miles, Market Bosworth a little over three, then Nuneaton at about five and Hinckley just past that. So you are never far from somewhere, but you are also never in it, and almost every journey starts with a few miles of country road before it becomes anything else.

That is a useful thing for us to know before writing anything, because it describes the mileage rather than the badge on the car. Two identical vehicles used differently want different maps, and out here the usage is fairly consistent: low speed lanes at both ends of a journey with something faster in the middle.

What rural miles actually ask of an engine

Country road driving is more demanding than it looks. You are constantly coming off the throttle and back on again, accelerating out of bends and slowing for something in the way, often in a gear that is slightly wrong for the speed. An engine with a flat spot low down makes that tiring, because every recovery needs either patience or a downshift, and over a few miles that adds up into real irritation.

The fix is not peak power. It is usable torque arriving earlier and more predictably, from just above idle through the middle of the rev range, so the car pulls out of a corner without being asked twice. That is the single most common thing people notice afterwards, and it is also the change that makes the least difference to a printout, which tells you something about printouts.

There is a diesel caveat worth raising. Short cold lane running is exactly the pattern that loads a particulate filter faster than it clears, because the exhaust rarely reaches the temperature a regeneration needs. If you are already seeing a light, that needs diagnosing properly before anything else happens, and we would say so rather than write a map over the top of it.

The liveried Mercia Remaps van, signwritten for remapping and tuning, diagnostics, gearbox tuning, EGR and AdBlue repairs and DPF diagnostics.
This is the van. We bring the equipment to the vehicle across Upton and the surrounding area, so the job happens where it is already parked.

The whole job, done at your gate

The workshop is in Lutterworth, a little under fifteen miles south east of here, and the service is mobile by default. Everything arrives with us. The original calibration is read off the ECU and saved, the car is driven and logged so there is real data about how this engine behaves under load, the map is written for it, and then it gets logged again to confirm the change did what it was meant to do.

That final check is the part that separates a proper job from a file transfer. Loading software and driving away is guessing, however good the file was, and measuring afterwards is the only way to know that nothing is running outside sensible limits. It is also why the road work matters, and why doing it on the roads you use is better than doing it on somebody else's test route.

Practically it needs very little from you. Somewhere the car can sit with the engine able to run, room to open a door and work at it, and a battery in decent health, because an ECU write wants steady voltage from start to finish. A tired battery is the commonest reason a visit gets cut short. Mobile ECU remapping explains how a typical visit goes.

When the answer is no

A map is not a repair, and it is worth being blunt about that. If a vehicle is down on power because a turbo is tired, an injector is leaking or something is split, adding torque will mask it briefly and then find the weakness, usually at the least convenient moment possible. So the questions come first: warning lights, service history, recent work, and anything odd about how it has been driving.

Emissions equipment is the other refusal. A blocked particulate filter is something we diagnose, clean and force regenerate, and it stays on the vehicle, because taking one off is an MOT failure and leaves the car unlawful to use on the road. EGR and AdBlue problems are traced to the actual fault and put right, with no blanking and no emulating. If you have been quoted for the other thing, ask what happens at the next MOT.

And if the honest answer is that your car has very little to gain, you will hear that too. A small naturally aspirated petrol has far less margin in its software than a modern turbocharged engine. Working vans are a different case and usually a strong one, which is covered under van and commercial remapping in Nuneaton.

Remapping in Upton: your questions answered

I am in one of the villages, not Upton. Does that count?

It does. This page covers Atterton, Fenny Drayton, Little Twycross, Orton on the Hill, Pinwall, Ratcliffe Culey, Sheepy Magna, Sheepy Parva, Shenton, Sibson, Twycross, Wellsborough and Witherley. Stoke Golding and Market Bosworth are a couple of miles off with pages of their own. Which page your postcode lands on makes no practical difference to us, so just ring and say where you are.

Do you come this far out?

Yes. It is a little under fifteen miles from the workshop in Lutterworth, which is an ordinary journey for us rather than a special trip. The entire job happens at the vehicle, so a driveway, a yard or a gateway all work, provided the car can sit with the engine able to run and there is somewhere safe to work at it.

What will I actually feel afterwards?

Usable torque arriving earlier and more predictably, from just above idle through the middle of the rev range. On the sort of roads round here that means the car pulls out of a corner without being asked twice, and you need fewer downshifts to keep up with the traffic. Peak power at the top of the rev band is the part you almost never use.

How much power will it gain?

We will not put a percentage on it over the phone, and we would be a little suspicious of anybody who does. It depends on the engine, whether it is turbocharged, and the health of your specific car. Two vehicles with identical badges can be in very different states. Give us the make, model, year and engine and you will get a realistic expectation for that car.

Is a mobile job as thorough as a workshop one?

It is the same job. Same equipment, same original file read and saved, same map written for that specific vehicle, same logging on the road before and afterwards. A car does not behave differently because of where it was parked when the file was written. The one genuine exception is an ECU that has to be read on a bench, which we check in advance.

What could stop it happening on the day?

The battery, more often than anything else. Writing to an ECU needs stable voltage for the whole process, and a battery that starts the car perfectly well can still sag partway through. If yours is old, or the vehicle has been standing for a few weeks, mention it when you book and we will come prepared rather than discovering it at your gate.

Would you remove the DPF?

No. Removal is an MOT failure and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, and we will not write software pretending a missing filter is still fitted. What we do is diagnose why it is loading, clean it properly and run a forced regeneration. EGR and AdBlue are the same: diagnosed and repaired, never blanked or emulated. If that is what you need, we are the wrong people.

My diesel does short lane runs and the light has come on. Is that the driving?

Very likely part of it. Short cold journeys rarely let the exhaust get hot enough for a regeneration to finish, so soot accumulates faster than it clears. But it is still worth checking whether something upstream is producing more soot than it should, such as an injector or a sensor reading wrong. Describe the symptoms and mileage when you ring.

I use a van for work. Is it worth doing?

Usually, and it is one of the better cases. A loaded van spends its life in the mid range under sustained load, which is exactly the part of the rev range that gets improved, so it typically means fewer downshifts on a hill and less effort to hold a speed. Tell us what it carries and how far when you ring.

Can it be put back to standard?

Yes. The original calibration is read off the ECU and stored before anything is written, so the vehicle goes back to exactly the state it was in when we arrived. That matters for a sale, a lease return or a dealer who wants the car standard before a warranty discussion. It is also a modification, so declare it to your insurer once it is done.
